Ch.12 Flicker

- Y/N -

*Come on, Y/N.*

"Look, kid I-" I sighed as Frisk signed to me.

It had been a week.

A week since Sierra's death.

The world hadn't reset yet.

It was supposed to three days ago.

Instead, three days ago was my sister's funeral.

Everyone attended.

Not me...

*Please?*

"Alright, fine." I huffed, displeased with myself; easily giving in to a child.

Everyone interrogated me the day after I came here. They didn't push too much upon hearing what happened though.

From then on, Frisk has been trying to get me out of the house, Toriel has been trying to smother me in motherly attention, Papyrus has been trying to hug me happy every day, Alphys wants me to watch anime with her as a distraction, Asgore taught me how to make tea, Sans annoys me to bits, then insists on punning me to forgiveness, and Undyne has been sparring with me, and teaching me to fight. She says it's good to let the anger out, the sadness, all in my fists, and wooden daggers.

Out of all of them, I think Asgore and Undyne helped the most. Tea is soothing, and helps me relax, while fighting helps me with my anger issues.

And believe me, I have them.

6 days ago. The day after Sierra's death.

"Come on, punk, talk to us."

"IT'S OKAY, HUMAN, YOU CAN TALK TO US ABOUT ANYTHING!"

"G-guys, I...I really don't thin-"

"My child, do not be afraid. We are here for you." Everyone had just gotten done interrogating a deathly silent me in their living room. They heard about Sierra and have been trying to break me. Get me to crumble into a puddle of tears.

"G-"

"Human...maybe I can make us some tea and we can sit down for awhile, talk about what's bothering you-"

"Guys-"

"Darling...silence doesn't suit you in the least-"

"Guys!" Alphys huffed in irritation, "We need to leave her be. She just..." all voices drowned out as a flash caught my attention.

Light was reflecting off of something in Sans' pocket. Sans was the only one in the room who hasn't said a word to me since we got here. He was standing a few feet next to me. Narrowing my eyes and shifting to block the light, I immediately reach in his pocket.

"kid, wh-" He doesn't have time to finish as I yank out the object in his pocket. The strap stained with a small splotch of red, the light reflecting off the lens being what caught my attention in the first place.

My sister's camera.

I stand there staring at it a moment.

"kid.."

"Why do you have this." I whisper, not looking at him.

"I-"

"WHY DO YOU HAVE THIS?!" I yelled, looking straight at him, my voice broken almost beyond recognition. My whole body trembled in anger and sadness, my heart pounding in my ears. I turned to the rest, "And you wanna know what's "bothering me" so badly?" I laughed, shaking my head, eyes fuzzy with tears, "My sister is fucking dead!" I yelled, a single tear rolling down my cheek.

"Y/n..." Undyne spoke first.

"No! Don't pity me, don't comfort me, I don't want your sympathy. I just want..." I let out a trembling breath as my anger subsided a bit, I glanced back at the camera. Someone placed a hand on my shoulder, "I-I just want my sister back..." someone hugged me as I fell to the floor, clutching the camera in my arms for dear life. I just let the tears fall at this point, sobbing and trembling so hard I wouldn't be surprised if it actually shook the house. The arms gave a little squeeze before I bolted from them, camera still in hand, and out the door.

Present~

They found me later that day, asleep at my sister's favorite park, and brought me back. I woke up the next day on their couch.

~#~

Frisk and Sans had brought me and a monster child named MK to a clearing. It was dark, and the stars were shining. A blanket was laid out on the grass underneath me and Sans. Frisk and her friend were playing.

Sans was staring up at the stars, his normally lazy, forced expression seeming almost peaceful now.

I looked at them,"Do you like them?"

"what?" I felt his eyes on me.

"The stars." My gaze never left the sky.

"well, yeah. us monsters portrayed stars as something beautiful, something that represented hope back in the underground," there was a pause as his eyes left me a moment, "what 'bout you, meatsack?"

"I used to." I said, ignoring the nickname.

"how come?" I looked at him from the side, seeing his bone-brows furrowed slightly.

"Because eventually you realize the disappointing truth. That no matter how hard you try, you'll never even come close to touching one. You have to wait to see them, and sometimes you can't even do that. When you do, that's all you can do. They shine just close enough for you to see, but too damn far away to reach. To me, once I realized that, they lost their beauty. Hope? That's not a very common word in my vocabulary. If anything they represent impossibility. Or deception. I used to see hope in them, just as you all did...but...I stopped believing in the stars a long time ago," I sigh.

"that's a bit of a negative way of thinkin' if ya ask me. why?" He sits up completely, having been leaning back on his elbows previously.

"They betrayed my trust," I shrug, laying on my back and resting my hands behind my head.

There was a moment of silence.

Sans hummed, stood up, and walked away. I paid no mind to this.

After a minute or two, he walked back over, "sit up," he ordered.

"I don't ha-"

"just do it, would ya?" He sighs.

I huff and do so. His hands are clasped in front of him.

"Now what?" I look at him, bored.

"close your eyes and cup your hands in front of you."

I hesitate, but knowing he'll argue with me until I do what he says, I close my eyes, cupping my hands in front of me.

I hear the grass crunch softly under his approaching footsteps. Something is placed in my hands, and his bony hands wrap around mine, quickly closing them.

After a second he lets go, "open your eyes."

I do as I'm told and open them. As if on cue a glow emits from inside my hand, softly brightening my arms and face in yellow.

My eyes soften in awe and my lips part slightly.

"you, y/n, have just held yourself a star." I feel his grin without having to look.

I blink in wonder, my mind briefly reverting back to when I was a bit younger.

Though I snap back almost as soon as I went, opening my hands as the glow dims out. A firefly flies out of my hand, glowing once more as it ascends.

"It's just a firefly, Sans." I lay back down, "Grow up."

He sighed, leaning on his elbows again.

He saw it though.

A spark lit in my eyes.

Though gone as soon as it came.

Even if I didn't know it was there.

He saw a flicker of hope in my eyes.

And he found himself determined to see it again.

Even if I didn't want to.
