Chapter 11

"Can you tell me what happened tonight?"

Kyna looked up at the police officer speaking to her. They stood by the hood of her car, the woman asking questions. After what went down tonight she was lucky her hands weren't cuffed behind her back.

Can you tell me what happened tonight?

How could she? Kyna still couldn't believe herself what happened. Still -though shit went out of control the only way it could, fast- everything came back to her slowly, torturously.

She'd just had the two fools lapping at her feet for her fake drug. They were ready to make a deal when the door burst open, emitting two bodies into the room. One pleading and demanding as he pulled on the other to come back to the hospital to get help. The other twisting out of his grasp, then grabbing the same hand to twist behind his back. While the other arm went around his neck.

Thinkin back it was the oddest thing she'd ever seen. Watching herself, as brother and sister fought, almost MMA style. Gave new meaning to out of body experience.

And that was when everything went downhill. As her brother struggled to free himself out of Bellart-Kyna's hold, spluttering 'let go' and 'big sis' and 'you're not well.' Bellart-Kyna ignored him and tightened his hold. Then to her horror, in an effort to dislodge him, Drake reeled back on his heels. His shirt lifted in the process and a slim, flat back device fell out of his pocket. If Drake had noticed he wouldn't have tried to stomp Bellart-Kyna's foot. Instead he kicked the device and it skidded to the middle of the floor.

Ossie and Tinna, already on their feet cursing and threatening Drake, turned their eyes on the device. Kyna's too.

It was black, sleek and rectangular. With a screen in the top half portion. A small, square red button below the screen in the middle. Silver buttons on the side and the rows of tiny holes on the bottom, the speaker.

With the glaring three letter word REC it wasn't any wonder a gun was pulled out. What happened next was a blur. Kyna was only sure of three things. Her jeans were buzzing. Her body had moved towards the gunman. And the pool of blood.

"Miss," said the officer in a firm tone, bringing her back to the present. "What happened tonight? Witnesses said you were in the room when the shots were fired."

Kyna didn't answer. The red flashing ambulance lights from the corner of her eye caught her attention. She glanced at the receding back of the ambulance into the dark night as it pulled out of the parking lot.

She watched as it turn left down the street and until it disappeared from view.

The officer's voice returned as if from across a canyon. "What do you know about the other girl in the room? What's your relationship with the suspects?"

"What's going to happen to my bro-the boy-Drake?"

The officer sighed then in a slightly gentler voice said, "Is that his name Drake? He was still unconscious last I checked. They're taking him to Presbyterian where he'll be under guard until he wakes up to answer some questions. Now miss-"

Presbyterian? Until he wakes up?

"Am I under arrest?" Kyna interrupted. Right now she didn't have time for this. She had to get to her brother and make sure he was alright. Then somehow, find Bellart and get her body back before the NYPD find him first. "I was only here to find my brother," Kyna said deciding to go with the truth, most of it anyways. "He started hanging out with those guys making my mom worried sick. It's not like I know them personally, so can I go now?"

"And was your brother there tonight?"

Kyna hesitated for a moment. "No," she lied.

The officer stared into her face. Kyna held her gaze and didn't look away. Not even when her eyes rolled into the back of her head and she slumped onto the ground at her feet.

Kyna stared into the empty space previously occupied by the cop, then slowly looked down, down down.

"Come on let's go." A hand quickly jostled her shoulder. Her eyes traveled up from the pair of scruffy boots, a dingy, wrinkled trench coat and up to the arm whose hand still gripped her shoulder. "Let's go Kyna," repeated Lumerio.

"What did you do?" Shocked from the latest turn of events her life has gone through she remained rooted in the spot. Thanks to her body snatcher she's now known to be hanging out with drug dealers. And who knew what other shit Ossie and Tinna were in to. Now she's going to be wanted for assaulting a police officer.

When had her life completely gone off the rails?

Lumerio didn't answer. He ran around the back of the police car and hopped into the driver seat. Nica threw her an angry glare then looked at Lumerio who yelled for them to jump in. He took a step forward then paused as if he couldn't figure out how to climb in. He had the same confused look on his face when they got on the train and then on the bus. You'd think he'd get used to this sort of thing already. Tired of waiting Lumerio pushed the door handle and opened the door. After Nica seated himself Lumerio started car and yelled again out the window, 'get in.'

"Lumerio, are you crazy?" Kyna shook her head and pointed down at the cop at her feet. "You don't go around knocking cops unconscious."

"Kyna we don't have time for this. Bellart hasn't had enough time to master your power. But now that he knows where after him as well as the local law enforcement, he's not going to wait. He's going to the nearest location ripe with the energy he needs. And we gotta get to him before he can and before the boys in blue catch up to him."

She knows that. She does. More than likely there was an APB out on her. And now with whatever move Lumerio just did, that both her and the cop didn't see coming, as the last person talking to her, they'll be looking for Kyna's doll body now too.

"Just get in," gritted Nica. "We don't have time to lose."

A moan drifted up from the ground. SHIT!

With no choice she jumped in the back seat and scooched down. Kyna didn't think she could be any more nervous but she'd just added stealing a cop car to her list. Her night couldn't get any worse, knock on wood.

Kyna looked around the back seat and panicked. She was surrounded by leather and plexiglass. To ward off bad luck from her senseless thoughts she leaned forward and knocked on the back of Lumerio's seat.

All too soon, they ditched the car by the East River near Hell Gate bridge. Then they ran for several minutes and ended up on the grounds of John McEnroe Tennis Academy. She'd been mulishly silent the entire time during the ride across the strait and into Randall's Island.

Ever since she lost consciousness after school and woke up in a faux body on another universe, she'd been on a tilt-a-whirl of emotions. Confusion. Fear. Anger. Worry. After going through those stages of what the hell is going on, the only emotion left was curiosity.

Kyna dreamt of that meadow field for months. And after the brief meeting in the club she'd noticed the same tugging sensation she'd felt the closer they made their way to club. And the ache of separation months prior whenever she'd wake up. It was the connection they spoke of when she woke up in her new body.

A connection they never explained beyond they had a connection. As if it was that simple. No, it was something more. Why her? Kyna could understand targeting her because she was a traveler. But couldn't Bellart just escaped and kidnap her? Force her to open the gates? Why go to all this trouble? And out of all the places Bellart could go, why did he pick New York City?

Kyna stopped and yelled at Lumerio and Nica's retreating backs. "Hey. Stop for a minute."

They both came to a halt and turned around. "Kyna we must move. We're running out of time-"

"No." Kyna shook her head and took a deep breath. Clearing her thoughts, she stepped forward and began to tell them the things plaguing her mind. "Ever since this whole crazy mess started I've just been reacting. That's stopping now. I need to know."

"Know what," Lumerio asked quietly. His face was void of emotion so it was difficult for Kyna to read him. Nica was a different story. He vibrated with agitation and sword swinging happiness.

"Why me? Why steal my body? What does he want to do?"

"It doesn't matter," said Nica. "Now let's go."

"Think we should tell her."

"No. The less she knows the better."

"But if she knew more it might help her in the long run."

"Excuse me." Kyna snapped her fingers and waved her hand. "The she you're talking about is right here. Now is anyone going to tell me the truth?"

Kyna watched as Nica's jaw chewed whatever words he wanted to say. She doubted it was the answers she wanted to hear. Probably were the orders he wanted to give. Yet he couldn't in fear in jeopardizing the mission by her not taking another step forward.

Car horns beeped and trains clacked along in the mounting silence as Kyna waited. And she didn't wait for long.

"Bellart's your soulmate," spoke up Lumerio. Kyna reeled back as if she sucker punched. "He used to be a man but the rage after losing his wife allowed him to live on in spirit form after the death of his mortal body."

"Ohmigod. So he came after me for a second chance at life or something? To complete his big bad plan he never got to finish?"

"No. He came after you because you're his soulmate. He cannot inhabit any other body, at least not for long, without causing it to decay. And worse, you're also the traveler."

"Worse how?"

"Because in your body he can also tap into your powers. And..."

"And what?"

"Open the gates to heaven and hell."
