Faye
"Dead?" I echoed, staring blankly at Jordan.
She nods, sniffling as she pulled me into a hug.
That's when I lost it. Whatever inch of sanity I had left was cut away with a pair emotional scissors. I felt dead inside, almost. I would be if the grief, shock, and rage hadn't been building up just now.
When I pull away I whip around to Mom. "Who killed her?"
"We don't know." She shook her head, blinking away a tears. "A human found her body on the side of the road. The police are involved now. We'll get the cause of death back when they're done inspecting it."
"Inspecting?" I snarl. "You and I both know who did it."
"It couldn't of been Livius," Dad replied, his eyes low. "There would of been traces of magic and Tyler, a Dragon Rider who works for human police, said there wasn't a fleck of magic on her body."
"Then how was she killed?" I asked.
Mom sobbed. Dad shook his head sadly, "She was stabbed multiple times in the back."
My stomach dropped. Multiple? Stabbed? What in God's name is wrong with people? Who would do that to Jen? She's just..Jen. Jen, the playful and outgoing cousin who was my art teacher.
"The people investigating her murder are coming to talk to us," Mom says, sniffing. "Maybe you should go out..I don't want you here unless they ask for you."
"But-"
Dad shook his head as if arguing wasn't worth it. So I nod numbly, grab my phone and walk out to the car. Quince and Lucy followed, but were silent.
I opened the front door to my car and got inside, Quince getting in the back and Lucy the passenger. I didn't put the keys in, I didn't even shut the door. I just sat there, slumped in the seat and staring blankly at the steering wheel.
"Want me to drive?" Lucy asked gently, finally snapping me out of my trance.
I stare at her for a moment, as if I've forgotten who she was. I then nodded and got out, Lucy following.
***
"Want anything?" Quince asked in Starbucks.
"Sure."
"What is it you want?"
"I don't care."
Quince hesitated before nodding and following Lucy to the counter, leaving me at the table.
I rested my head in my hands, ignoring the conversations around me, until that is, I heard Jen's name.
"..heard she was stabbed," someone whispered, sounding scared. "She was related to the Foreigners."
Another woman let out a sound of sympathy. "Poor family. Must be devastated."
"Do you think any of them did it?"
"No, probably not. I mean, I've met them," the other one explained. "They're nice enough people. Reserved, though."
"Think they'll let the police question them?"
"I would think so. They don't seem like the type of people to hide anything."
Oh, I thought grimly, you've no idea. You really don't.
"I think that's her daughter that came in," the first woman said again.
"Did she look..like, upset?"
"Why would I?" the first woman snapped harshly. "It's rude to stare, it's also rude to poke around their business."
"Then why gossip about it?" the third woman, a new voice, asked.
"I'm only telling you what I heard from the newspaper," she retorted. "I've not asked that family a single question."
"Good," I heard Lucy say loudly. I turn my head to see her staring at all three women, eyes narrowed, lips pursed. "You know Faye is right there." She gestured her elbow to me, gripping her coffee cup so hard I thought she'd break it. "She can hear you."
The women only stared at her, and the third one said, "It's not very polite to eavesdrop."
"Yeah?" Lucy nods. "Well, it isn't polite to talk about the murder of a family member in front of another family member."
Quince came up, two coffee's in her hand. "Come on, ignore them."
"Mind your own business for once," Lucy suggested, glaring, "and stay out of other peoples business."
Lucy and Quince approached me, and sat down. I thanked Quince and took the coffee, feeling brightened by Lucy's words.
"Thank you," I say to Lucy.
She shrugged. "You're welcome. It's not very polite to gossip, after all," she added loudly, making the women shoot us annoyed looks.
I give her a small, weak smile and take a sip of coffee.
***
"Faye, sweetheart," Mom says, putting her hand on my back and leading me to the living room when I got come. "One of the investigators would like to ask you some questions. He said it didn't have to be now, if you aren't comfortable."
I rolled it over in my head. Do I want to talk about Jen, my cousin, my teacher, my friend? I did want whoever killed her behind bars..
"Okay," I said, nodding.
She smiled encouragingly, and led me to the living room where an investigator sat across from my Dad, dressed in slacks and a nice shirt..
"Hello, Faye," Dad says, gesturing me over. I sit by Dad. "This is Investigator Drake Higgins."
He leans forward, his brown hair, greying I might add, short and neat. He had green eyes. He sticks his hand out to shake mine, and when he took it he says, "Hello, Faye. How are you?"
I gave him a weak smile. He was polite enough, kind and not intimidating in the least. "I'm coping."
He nods, eyes sympathetic. But I know it's just a routine for him. Go to their houses, say he understands, looks sympathetic for whoever goes through a tragic death and assures them the case will be solved.
Only some get solved.
"Now," Higgins says, going straight to business, and pulling out a notebook. "if you are comfortable to have me interview you here, we will start now."
I nod. "I'm comfortable."
He nods. He writes something down, before asking, "The victim is of blood correct?"
I gulp. "Yes, she's my cousin."
"How close were you two?" he asked then, writing something down.
"Very close, I guess," I said, hands shaking as I folded and unfolded them. "We-we used to do things together all the time when I was little."
"Like what?"
"I don't know." I think back. "Ride horses. Draw. She was older, so she kind of watched over me when my parents were at work."
He nodded, wrote down, then looked up. "She was your high school art teacher?"
"Yeah," I tell him.
"Did she, by any chance," Higgins starts, "have any people who would want to hurt her?"
I stare at her. Should I mention Amanda? No, she'd only twist the story then we'd be in shit and wouldn't be able to explain why she was in the middle of school with a knife after me, why Jen didn't call police, etc.
Besides, something tells me the murderer was not Amanda.
"No," is my answer, making any emotions leave my face. Then I added with honesty, "Everyone loved her. She was always happy, no matter what."
He nodded again, wrote down, looked up once more. "That's all I need for now. Thank you Faye."
"You're welcome." I get to my feet.
"Faye." I turn and he looked determined. "We'll figure out who did this. I promise."
I nod, a new found respect blooming inside of me. "I hope you do."
**
"I heard what happened," Leto said an hour later. After spending an hour crying in my room, not knowing who to talk to, I know I could talk to Leto.
She met me in an empty field, and immediately, wrapped her wing around me, and drew me close. To comfort me.
"It's not fair," I told her, crying again. "Jen was so down to earth. She didn't deserve to die!"
Leto blinks at me, bending down and nuzzling me. "I know. Her dragon..he's.."
"He's what?"
Leto shifted. " We had to kill him."
"What?" My eyes widened.
Leto looked sad, regretful even. "He didn't leave us much of a choice."
" Don't dragons pick new riders if their current rider dies?" I ask her.
"No." She shook her massive white head. "A dragon only has one dragon rider. Remember, a bond between dragon and rider is stronger than a bond between a werewolf and their mate. Ten times stronger."
"Werewolves exist?"
" Yes." Leto looked at me oddly.
"Off topic," I say, giving her a weak smile, "my fault."
She shrugged. "Anyways, if their rider dies, then it's really unexpected on what the dragon will do. It always depends, but never, ever will a dragon choose another rider. The Stars, or what we dragons call our ancestors, and your ancestors pair a dragon and rider up hundreds of years before either is born."
"Wow."
"Yes. It's amazing how it works. But, Jen's dragon went on a rampage. He would of killed anyone who got in his way."
"Poor thing," I said sorrowfully. In my head I thought, At least they're together. Not alone, waiting for the other to join them.
I closed my eyes and leaned against Leto, I thought, I love you Jen. Thank you for being the best cousin I ever had. And I'm sorry for everything that's happened to you.
*********
I can't even, like, I'm so sorry if I made you cry.
If it makes any of you feel better, I cried too. Like, it was hard to kill her off and stuff.
I'm sorry. D:
But, things should get better soon..
Until next time!
