"What do you mean your parents are visiting?" I demanded as I watched Lucy grip the railing to the deck and look ahead.

"Exactly as I said," she snaps at me, eyes blazing with frustration. "My dear old dad is out of jail, and now they're just poppin' up for a visit!"

"Damn," Quince murmurs from beside me, hands clasped together.

"Damn," I agreed solemnly. "Lucy's Mom and I used to get along okay, but now that I'm a rider and we know she's a Slayer.."

Lucy tapped the railing with her foot, glaring down at it. "She's you're enemy, now Faye."

"Yes." I looked out the window. "How long until they're here?"

"Well, they decided to tell me after they got off their plane. So soon, I would guess."

"How do they know where you're at?" I asked her.

She sighed, running her hand through her hair. "I forgot to turn off my cell phone. They took the opportunity to call me and track me at the same time."

"They won't be happy with me," I said, leaning back.

"Of course not," Quince said. "You turned their daughter to the other side."

"It was my choice and my choice alone," Lucy replied grimly. "I don't regret it, nor have I ever had second thoughts about it. The moment I ripped that bracelet off my wrist I knew there was no going back and that was fine."

"Bracelet?" I share a glance with Quince who leans forward.

"Slayers have a dragon-skin bracelet," Lucy begins, gazing out the window. "Basically, when someone does something incredible they get a bracelet made from dragon skin. I had one from an earth dragon. Ken and I cut ours off and burned them, a sign of us giving up our heritage."

"Oh," I murmured. "I'm sorry."

"Sorry?" Lucy stares at me. "Faye, the dragons are the best creatures I've ever seen. They're not meant to be killed."

"Still." I stare at my hands. "You gave up nearly everything. Family, heritage."

"Family," she said, sounding a little bitter, "is not based on blood. It's based on people who accept you for who you are. My mother and father were never like that. Hell, if I came out to tell them I was a lesbian they'd try to ship me off."

Quince looks up at her. "You won't tell them?"

A smirk curled Lucy's lips. "I said if I had told them, speaking in past tense. Say, a year ago. I wasn't even into girls a year ago, but if I was my parents would be so ashamed."

"And you don't care?" Quince pressed, biting her lip.

Lucy frowns and pulls Quince up, putting her hands on her face. "I don't give two shits what my parents think, Quince. I never have, I never will. I plan on telling them right in front of their faces the moment they walk in."

Quince smiled, leaning into Lucy's hands.

I look away, my coat suddenly my main point of interest.

"Besides." I felt myself being pulled up. I look and see Lucy with her arms slung around both Quince's shoulders and mine. "My parents have no power here. I've contacted some certain riders-" she shot a playful glance at me, "-and they'll have this place under full watch."

"That's good," I say, elbowing her in the ribs.

She laughed, ruffling my hair. "And trust me, I don't care if you have a few choice words for them."

--------

"They're on their way up," Lucy announced, shutting the deck door.

"Great," I said with fake cheer.

A small smile played on her lips as we all sit.

A knock at the door.

"Come in," Lucy called, her hands gripping the couch.

The door opens and two figures appear. The first, a woman with long black hair up in a bun, scans the room until her eyes land on Lucy. Then me. She narrowed her eyes.

The second was a man with dark brown hair cropped short.

"Hello," Lucy greets coolly.

"Hi, darling," Lucy's mother greeted sweetly. Smooth.

"May I ask what drove you to this..unexpected visit?" Lucy's eyes never left her mother.

Her parents sit down across from us, frowning disapprovingly. "To chat of course," she drawls. "However, I didn't expect to see you with them."

"Who she chooses to be friends with is not up to you," I say before Lucy could speak. Where did I get so confident?

Her parents' eyes switch to me, flashing with a disgusted emotion. Her father said, "I'm afraid we weren't asking you, darling."

"She has as much right to talk here, father," Lucy defends in an even voice, her face void of emotion. "Say what you wish, I don't care, but my friends can say what they want as well."

Her mother pursed her lips. "Very well, Lucille."

Lucy's eyes narrowed at the name. "Continue, Faye."

"Be careful what you say and do," is all I told them.

"Don't worry, dear," her mother says to me, a forced smile like smirk on her ruby red lips, "We will be very careful."

"Good," I reply, raising my chin. "Then maybe we can get along."

"Indeed." She looks at me another long moment before turning to Lucy. "So, tell me, dear. How have you been since you turned your back on your family?"

Lucy didn't take the bait. "Good," she tells her. "Wonderful, actually. I'm happy, in a relationship, even."

"Oh?" her mother asks, eyes glinting with curiosity. "Who is the lucky man?"

"Quince is the lucky girl," Lucy replied, smiling happily at Quince who flushed and shifted awkwardly.

Her mother shifts as well, her eyes suddenly suspicious. "Oh, I see. Your partner is very pretty."

"Thank you," Quince said, her own voice shaking slightly.

Lucy's mother studied Quince with accusing eyes, smirking.

Her father only glared. "This is wrong, Lucille. This is very very wrong."

Lucy whips her head towards her father. "No, father, it's not. You think you can come in here and accuse me of doing wrong things? What about you, father? Murder, killing?"

"I do only what is asked," he snaps. "Those demon riders-" he points a large finger at me. "-are the spawns of the devil himself, whether they admit it or not!"

I cut in again, "Really? Dragons are demons, I take it? Then how is it they were here long before Jesus was born, Mr. Perkins? How is it that they were here long before Satan was tossed out of Heaven? They were here long before Noah, long before Jesus's birth, and will be here long after the world ends."

His face was red with anger. "All lies! Those are tales told to keep children up at night. You are demon worshippers."

I met his gaze. "I know a demon, Mr. Perkins. I've met one and have talked with one. Dragons are not demons, they are creatures that respect others."

"They kill us," he spat.

"Because you try to kill us!" I shot back, glaring now. "They not only defend themselves against you, they defend their riders."

"You little bitch," he snarled, getting up.

Lucy was up and at her fathers throat in an instant. "Don't touch her, or you'll face dire consequences."

He breathed heavily, angered breathing. "You have shamed generations of your ancestors."

"Our ancestors were bloody, ruthless, and cold," she spat, stepping back from him. "They're the monsters. You're the monsters. Not the dragons."

Her mother stood up. "Lucille."

"You're visiting time is over," she said coldly. "If you aren't out of this country by tomorrow night, I'm sure you'll be escorted out."

Eesh. Things went down, yes? o.O
