Chapter 17: Ups and Downs
Hello! So we finally finished the carpets and stuff last night, so I can post again!
Enjoy!

The next day, around eleven, I woke up to find a whole bunch of my books, my phone, laptop, and a stuffed dragon with a card and bow attached around it's neck.
I reach down to the end of my bed, much to my stomachs protests, and untie the bow and ribbon, taking the card.
I opened it, and it read,
"Faye,
You're father and I had to do some work with the company, so at the moment we can not be there in the hospital. We're sorry we couldn't be there when you woke up, but we did leave some things for you to keep yourself busy with. Jordan will check in on you soon.
Kisses,
Mom."
I set the card to the side and grabbed my phone, checking my messages.
My phone wasn't spamming with emails or messages, thank gosh. I open my laptop and decide to watch some Netflix since I haven't watched it in a while.
Later, I'm not sure how later, I feel a tap on my knee and I look up. Jackson stood over me, flowers in hand.
"Hi." I took my headphones out, sitting up awkwardly and avoiding his gaze.
"Hey." He sits down on the edge of the bed, setting the flowers beside him. "How are you?"
"I'm still sane," I reply, giving him a weak smile. "But I'm nearly on my way to a nuthouse."
He chuckled, a smile on his face as well. "Good to hear."
We sit in silence again.
A minute goes by.
Then five.
Then ten.
"Okay," I said, sitting upright again. "This is so stupid."
He glances up at me, confused. "What do you mean?"
"You and I both know this is awkward beyond words, Jackson."
He shrugged half-heartily. "I know."
"Well stop being awkward," I mumble. "It makes me uneasy."
"How can I stop?" he shot back with a sigh. "The last time I saw you we got into a fight."
Oh, yeah, that. The whole dragon blood thing.
"I know." I pick at the tubes in my wrist and sighed. "But I think we need to move on from that."
Jackson opened his mouth but just then my nurse, Lora, came in. "Hi, there, Faye."
"Hi." I smiled at her.
"How do you feel?" she asks, coming over to the hospital equipment and tapping a few buttons on the screen.
"Fine," I told her.
"Any sharp pains in your abdomen?"
"No." I shook my head. "It feels fine."
She nods. "That's good.. Any other pains?"
"Just a little sore."
"Okay." She turned to me. "I need to do a check up real quick."
I nod and gesture for Jackson to get up. He kisses my head before saying, "I'll be in the waiting room."
I nod as he leaves.
**
Mom and Dad rushed into the room, upset looking.
"Mom? Dad?" I sit up, eyeing them. "Wh-"
"What did the nurse tell you, sweetheart?" Mom asks, sitting beside me.
"Er.." I blinked slowly. "That I was fine, of course. Nothing seems to be wrong.."
She let out a relieved breath. "Good."
"Why did you seem so upset?" I narrow my eyes.
"You're surgeon..he called us earlier today.."
"To tell you I'm okay?" I ask, tilting my head.
Sadness and pity filled her eyes as she shook her head. "It's..it's worse, sweetie."
Alarm shot through me like a needle. I quickly sat up, causing me to flinch in pain. I slowly lay back. "What did he say?"
"Well," she says, "When he was doing the surgery, he studied where the bullet shot you."
"Yeah, it hit a few organs." I raise an eyebrow at her. "Mom what's going on?"
"He had his suspicions," Mom continued, sniffling. "The way the bullet hit you.."
"Mom." I put my hand on her shoulder. "Mom, tell me."
"H-he got it confirmed by some other doctors and surgeons by sending pictures and reports of where the bullet punctured your body." Mom was now shaking, as if trying to hold a sob back. "When you came out of surgery he told us it was just a suspicion..then he looked into it more."
"Mom," I say sternly, glancing at Dad, whose hands were the pockets of his suit. He was looking down at his shoes, as if they just became the most interesting thing in the room. "Tell me, please."
Mom gives me a look so deep with sorrow it made me suck in a deep breath. I told myself to prepare for the bad news, it has to be bad if my Mom was acting like this.
"Faye, sweetheart," Mom murmured, her hand running down my head as if to comfort me. "The surgeon, he..he said.."
"He said what mom?" I urge gently.
Mom sniffled, and took in a shaky breath. "Faye, you might never be able to have children."
Okay, I thought I had prepared myself. This is not what I expected, and because I was too shocked to come back with much of a reply, I said, "What?"
She closed her eyes regretfully. "There's a possibility you might not be able to conceive a child in the future, and if you do there's a high chance of a miscarriage."
Horror fogged around me as I stared at her, silently pleading it wasn't true. "S-so, what you mean to say is..I will never have children?"
"Well," Mom says, blinking tears from her eyes, "it's not exactly impossible..but conceiving will be about a 1 percent chance and miscarriage will be a 97.4 percent possibility."
I sat back against the pillows, trying to take in this information. I might not ever have children? Ever?
Mom saw my gaze and leaned forward, "Sweetie. Look at me. You're still fertile, there is still a possibility of having a baby."
I looked at her through the tears I didn't bother wiping away. "M-Mom, I probably won't ever give birth. Or conceive."
"Maybe," Mom admitted, hand on mine as she pulled me into a soft embrace. "But it's not a lost cause. They are just numbers. The bullet didn't make you infertile, sweetie. You still have a chance."
"And when I'm older," I whisper to her, "When Jackson and I want children, what then Mom? Don't you want grandchildren?"
"With all my heart," she says, "But I wouldn't trade you for anything, honey."
I placed my head on her shoulder.
How on Earth am I going to explain this to Jackson?
******
Poor Faye.. D:
I nearly cried and deleted this part of the chapter because I hate when bad things happen to my precious characters, but it had to be done.
However, not all hope is lost!!
She still might be able to have a child later in life, since Faye is seemingly a lucky girl. :D
Until next time, beauties!
