Chapter #5
"Listen, Seto, you have to trust me if you're going to get out of this", Phantom is tense as the other sorcerers spot them from down the hall.
"I'l do anything to protect my sister". Seto sets her down behind the two of them. She's still scared, but confident that her big brother will protect them.
"Just don't think too much. You're body still knows what to do..... probably". Before Seto can ask Phantom what the plan is, the guard puts his hand on the prince's shoulder. A searing heat suddenly floods through Sero's body, but it doesn't hurt. His vision even brightens. Phantom disappears in a flash of purple almost instantly. A small bat replaces him and it lands on Seto's shoulder.
The Prince is confused and doesn't understand what's happening, but he's still calm; maybe calmer then he's ever been. The heat is still crackling in his veins like a living thing. His instincts know what to do even when he doesn't. He moves on autopilot from the whispers of the past.
One of the sorcerers sends a blast of water rushing at them. Seto reacts smoothly and sends the heat up into his hand and out. A torrent of purple flames flare to life and burns hot enough to counter the water. Both turn to steam. Magic. Seto has magic.
Another sorcerer splays out their hands at him, a gust of wind nearly knocking him over. The bat on his shoulder leaps off and flies into the gust before it strengthens. The invisible force bends around the bat and slams harmlessly into the wall. The prince sends three small fireballs back at the attacker in quick succession, throwing them like baseballs. They hit both sorcerers with the force of a sledge hammer. It knocks them both down. It should be a while until they can get up.
"Seto..... you're doing magic", Abigail whispers in awe.
This snaps the prince back onto the present. He stumbles out of his fighting stance, confused where he had even learned it from. He doesn't have magic! How can this be possible? He looks over at his reflection in a window, staring at his purple eyes. They slowly fade back to brown as the the powerful heat starts to drain away, and his vision returns to normal. Seto flicks his hand like he had just done moments before, but there's not even a lick of purple flame left. The prince has endured years of instructors trying to get him to find even a drop of magic, and now it suddenly comes and goes without any warning.
"I-...... I don't have magic", Seto mumbles. Voices down the hall make his head snap up, and he quickly picks Abigail back up. He has no idea where Phantom went or where that bat came from, but he can't wait here.
A small staircase leading all the way down to the kitchen is few more hallways down, but he can hear people shouting from those halls. Seto goes back down the hall to another door and ducks inside before he can be spotted. He's back in his own room. Everything seemed so normal this morning. He locks the door, sets his sister down, and immediately starts yanking on his bed's curtains.
"Where are we going, Seto? We're still on the third floor", Abigail whimpers. She's not crying anymore, but she's old enough to know something bad is going on.
"There's too many sorcerers for me to fight. You magic isn't strong yet, and I...... I'm just human". Seto finally pulls the drapes off his bed and moves to the window. He's had to remind himself all his life that he's just human, but that was magic in the hallway. His instincts knew exactly how to stand and how to defeat the sorcerers the quickest. The only solution Seto can think of is that Phantom somehow gave him magic, but the guard has made a mysterious disappearance.
The prince starts to tie his curtains and bedsheets together into tight knots. He's so focused that he doesn't register a small bat's familiar weight on his shoulder. Once everything is tied into a makeshift rope, Seto kicks in the window and shatters the glass. They don't actually open by themselves. He ties the rope to the window frame and motions Abigail to walk over.
"Mom's garden is just under us, Abby. There's a doorway for the servants that lead outside the castle. I just need you to brave, alright? We'll have to go down the rope one at a time", Seto explains. He helps Abigail get up on the windowsill. He knows the rope will support her weight, but he's not sure about himself. She climbs down slowly, terrified of falling down from the three floors.
Something slams against the bedroom door, making Seto jump. He's forced to turn away from watching Abiagila climb. He doesn't have to be a sorcerer to build a barricade. The prince painfully shoves his dresser in front of the creaking door before he goes back to the window. It'll buy them a little more time. Abigail has just made it to the ground, so Seto grabs the bedsheet rope and slips over the window's edge.
The rope goes taunt and stretches before it somehow holds Seto's weight. He shimmies down as fast as he can, hyper-aware of the bangs on his bedroom door. He can hear the dresser crash to the ground just as he makes it to the bottom.
"Come on! We have to hurry!", Seto snaps, taking Abigail's hand and running through the garden. His cloak snags on a rose bush and tears at the end.
The garden is small, with only a few paths and flower bushes. There's a small tree with hanging branches that covers up a doorway at the far end. Seto and Abigail duck underneath and run through a small passage before they come out on the edge of a cliff. The backside of the castle overlooks the ocean. A thin, winding trail leads down from the garden and into the woods. It also leads to a pair of sorcerers right below them. Seto doesn't have time to hide back in the tunnel before he's spotted.
One of them pull out a bow and arrows tipped with some king of potion. The other grows claws on their hands, and starts to climb of the cliff to the two royal children. Seto makes a split-second decision; quick and stupid.
He takes Abigail's hand and throws himself off the cliff.
