Freedom

My roots were never deep set,
Always spread far and high,
Like the rainforest in search of what's sparse,
A free country we were taught.
But what defines freedom?
Being able to speak without fear?
Being able to act on what you think is right?
Having no limits on your life?

I travelled the world to see for myself,
To taste all people's freedom,
To see true freedom and once thought freedom,

I went to a dessert where every grain of sand is free,
But is it? Wicked winds and strong storms whip the sand in a frenzy,
The cacti have no rules but do they change?
Do you see cacti moving on for a change of scenery?
Do the lizards ever go on holiday for a break?
Think.......

I went to the ocean where every fish is free,
But is it? Can they decide to live on land?
Can they suddenly become vegetarians or carnivores?
Does the tide ever stop? Or does it always hear the moon's song?
Forever it's been like this and with no change,
Is change freedom? Is that what freedom means?

I went to the rainforest where every raindrop is free,
But is it?
Where panthers prowl and parrots pipe their songs,
Where there is never any silence as the animals chatter continuously,
Where sunlight fights to pierce the canopy,
Causing the tall trees to still grow taller,

So I went to a mountain peak where every snowflake is free,
But is it? Can that snowflake fall upwards?
Wil that snowflake be able to fight the winds?
Or will the rules of life send it into the mainstream of society?
Of course it will......
That snowflake may be picked up by the wind,
But it will eventually fall and settle alongside that mountain,

Freedom has no definitive definition,
Freedom means something different to every life on this planet,
Freedom could be the right to decide who to love and marry,
Freedom could be the right to democracy,
Or it could be the right to speak out about what you think is right,

To a small grain of sand freedom could be the right to fight the wind,
To a cactus freedom could be the right to move,
To a fish freedom could be the right to change its diet,
To the tide freedom could be the right to make its own rhythm,
To a rainforest freedom could be the right to silence,
And to a snowflake the right to fall upwards,

But all of those things are free,
Mother Earth has rules for a reason,
If raindrops fell upwards than the rainforest would have greater worries than silence,
If the tide changed than the fish would have bigger worries than its diet,

Freedom is what you make of it,
Define your own freedom by living life to the full,
Create your own freedom.
