III
It was 4:05 am the last time I checked my phone. I tried to super-speed home, but I crashed into a trash can twice before I gave up and started walking. Climbing the last flight of stairs before reaching the penthouse suit I try to fight my pounding headache. Twisting the knob off, the door opens slowly.
Shit.
I walked in, there is no point of tip toeing if your dad has super hearing. I pray that he's still in France.
"Jason Kent," he bellowed.
Shit.
I turned and walked through the kitchen. There they sitting at the dining room table my parents, the powerful and formidable Lois Lane, and The Man of Steel. My mom glared down at me like lasers are going to shoot out of her eyes. Dad stood there in his suit, arms folded over one another. It use to intimidate me when we would have talks while he was in his suit.
"Where were you?" My mom asked.
I try to keep a tight lip, I don't want to give any indication that I was drunk.
"Answer you mother, Jason."
"I was at The Lofts with Aaron." My eyes dart around to the only lamp illuminating the room, the cup of coffee my mom was drinking, my dad's red boots. Anywhere but-
"Are you drunk?" My father states more than asks.
I opened my mouth to speak.
"You heart rate is off, you're switching your balance, your ears are bright red, and you breath reeks of Vodka."
"In my defense I didn't know I could get drunk." I stated meekly.
"We don't know what affects you are not." He said sternly. "What if you hurt someone, exposed yourself. People know you exist and they want to know who you are to get to-"
"You," I could feel the room shift along with my balance.
"All of us. My enemies can use you against me, jeopardize not only our family, but the League and anyone else who is close to us."
"I was careful dad." I explain.
"Like when you broke the door knob just a second ago. If you are weakened you cannot properly face any threats. What if you needed to stop a mugging or worse. You want to be a hero, well act like it."
"I'm not even a hero, you don't even let me do anything." I rolled my eyes.
"That's because you act like a child." His words seem angry. But my father's voice remains calm, he's always had this ability to remain calm during any situation.
"Jason, we have these rules for a reason, I know you want to be like everyone else. But you don't have that luxury." My mom cut through the tension with her surprisingly calm voice. "We didn't know where you were, what if you someone kidnapped you, or you were beamed up into space, or captured by the government."
"I'm sorry mom." I could feel her hurt and worry.
"You're smarter than this." She stands up with her coffee and heads to their room.
Dad had simmered, "I think it's time we learn everything you're capable of, I'll see you 9 am sharp, we're going to the Fortress after training." With that Superman walks out of the room, leaving me alone staring out the window at the few stars in the sky.
~~~~~
As promised my dad woke me up at 9 am. He pulls the blinds back letting in the morning sun. "Get dressed and head down to the farm, I'll meet you there." My dad says in a monotone. He doesn't have the patience for me today. Yawning as I get up to go to the kitchen, walking past the dining room table I open the double doors to the balcony. Out stretching my arms I let the sun's rays engulf me. Curing my hangover and waking me up. 'The sun helps us, heals us, it is the source of all our strength.' I recall my father saying to me countless times.
My head clears and a sense of tranquility washes over.
"Jason put some pants pants on!" My mom calls from the kitchen.
"Can I have a second to just breath." I reply.
"Hero's don't get a second to breath." I walk back into the kitchen, my mom pulls out Chinese food from the microwave. "Here day old takeout." She smiles.
"Thanks mom." I sit down to eat. Takeout menus cover our refrigerator, my mom has never been much of a cook.
After eating I super-speed to get dressed, in basketball shorts and the cleanest tee shirt I could find.
"Bye mom, I love you."
"Love you too." She says beaming. Her demeanor changes. "Jason," she stops me. "Take your time and really think, don't get in your head."
"Yeah, I know mom." I dismiss and race off to the farm.
~~~~~
My dad shoves the last ten foot pole in the ground. "Ten poles, 6 of them have a red X on them don't blast the ones with X's." My dad stated matter-of-factly. He takes a step back.
I stand several feet away in the middle of a field on our family farm.
I take a deep breath and close my eyes. Focusing everything on heat, the feeling of it creeping up my toes into my chest. Nothing, I take another breath and concentrate.
Nothing.
"When is the last time you felt this heat. What were you doing, who were you thinking of?" I could hear my dad say calmly.
"How is that relevant?" I think my dad has lost it.
"Just listen to me and focus on who you were thinking of, what did you see?"
Closing my eyes I breath out. Thinking back to when I first saw Astral. The way she moved and her confidence. And what I wanted to do to her in that moment. The heat quickly climbs my body, rushing to my head.
Opening my eyes heat beams out. I feel the wood slice in one swift motion turning my head to slice the other pillars. Smiling I close my eyes to stop the blast.
Opening them I look at my disappointed father's face, and the ten pillars on fire.
"UGHH!" I scream at the sky.
My dad rolls up his plaid sleeves and plunges ten more pillars into the ground. "Let's go again."
And we did, until the sun began to set and a hundred charred pillars lay on the ground. I managed to save a few pillars. If they were human they would only have minor injuries, nothing a few stitches and major surgery couldn't fix.
"Let's pick this up tomorrow."
"Finally." I sigh, letting myself fall to the ground. My dad uses his heat vision to disintegrate the wood with great precision. He doesn't want to give any indication that anything strange happens on this farm.
I can count on one hand the number of times I flew with my father. The feeling of the wind surrounding your body whizzing past you. As a kid I used to beg to go flying. But that was far between, my father has more important matters.
Being up in the air now reminds me of that free feeling, that weightlessness. The stars feel closer and everything plaguing you seems so distance. I would sleep in the clouds if I could.
Looking down I can see the world shift, from buildings reaching for the stars, to vast forests stretching endlessly. I know we are close when I can see a cloud of smoke when I breath out.
We land softly on the ice block in front of The Fortress of Solitude. Rays of multi-color light bend and shift over the fortress. Lighting the night sky, it reminds me of being in The Lofts.
To explain the fortress won't do it justice. The crystal pillars stand taller then any building, and it spans a city block. My dad leads me through the main entrance, the crystal wall are a perfect mirror. It shows me the fear written on my face.
I fear to know the truth.
To know if everything I have worked towards, everything the world expected of me would happen. Will ever manifest all of my father's powers, will I ever fly.
