Chapter fourteen: Making new memories
Lucas,1986,Huntsville,Alabama
These last few months have been actually decent, thanks to Greg. I've always thought Greg was a nice guy but I never saw us being anything more than acquaintances. Especially with Caleb's disdain towards him but now that Caleb's out of my life, I really don't give a shit. I always thought Greg had such perfect life, he had money and good looks. In reality though Greg was super lonely, his dad was always working and his mamma was the type to sleep around. He had no siblings either, so he basically raised himself. At least I had a decent childhood unlike him since he had to grow up fast. I never thought I would find someone else besides Caleb that I trusted with my secrets. I was sitting by the school entrance waiting for Greg, the weather too cold for me to wait by the car. Today was the winter formal but since neither of us was in the mood to go. We decided to skip and hang out at his house.
As I sat waiting by the entrance, I spotted her. Jessica who for once wasn't with Caleb was walking by with sweet, Jennifer. Both we're giggling and whispering, and even though I swore to myself and Greg that I would ignore all things Caleb. I couldn't help but move closer to hear their conversation, my mind was telling me no but my heart was begging to know. Of course as always,my heart won.
" So he really took you somewhere special?" Jennifer asks, clear envy in her voice.
" Yeah a place that he only knows about." Jessica brags.
A place only he knows about, she couldn't mean.....
" Yeah it was a small spot in the woods, he told me I was the first girl he's brought there." She says with a smug grin.
I feel my chest constrict with discomfort at her words. How could he show someone else our spot? We promised we'd never show anyone else. So why would he do this to me? Was it not enough that he had hurt me, that he decided to now damage my memories of us as well. I walk away before I can do something stupid, like curse her out. I showed him that spot first, I wanted to say. I wanted to rub it in, that her boyfriend and I lost our virginity to each other there. We had created something beautiful there, now he destroyed it with just one touch.
I wait by Greg's car, trying to use the coldness to calm my anger. Fine if he wanted to destroy our memories there, I would as well. I would make new memories with someone else. I finally spot Greg, knowing he got held up talking to his coach again. That's another thing I finally did, I dropped sports. Since the only reason I was there in the first place, was for Caleb.
" Hey, are you okay?" He asks with worried expression.
" No, but I will be, after I show you something." I say with an evil smile on my face.
" Lucas, please don't smile like that, you're scaring the freshies." He says gesturing to a group of baby faced teens, giving us weird looks.
" Oh my bad, I shouldn't scare the poor children." I say turning and giving them a shark like grin, making them walk faster away from us.
" You have some serious issues." He says shaking his head at me.
" Oh live a little, you All American boy." I tease.
" All American boy?" He asks with a raised eye brow.
" You have the typical, dumb, muscly, hot blonde look going for you." I say laughing.
" You think I'm hot?" He asks smirking.
" Of course you and your big ego only heard the word hot." I say with an eye roll.
" Just shut up and get in the car." He says laughing.
"Don't tell me what to do." I huff but get in the car anyways.
He climbs in soon after me and we blast his heater on, as high as it will go. He turns up his lame country music, that I try to shut off . He just swats my hands away and turns to me belting out the lyrics, loudly and terribly.
" Stop your horrible singing please." I beg putting my hands over my ears.
He just continues singing Sweet Home Alabama, I hate this song with a passion. When I finally have enough I jump over, putting my hand on his mouth. This causes him to swerve on the slippery road.
" Lucas don't touch the driver like that it's dangerous, we could wreck." He scolds me.
" Good I rather wreck, than to listen to you sing." I say with relief that he stopped singing.
" Lucas, why are you so mean to me?" He asks looking sulky as we pull into his driveway.
" Because it's the only entertainment in my life." I say, poking him in his ticklish spot making him yell in surprise.
" Well if you don't stop, I'm going to come over there and whoop you." He says trying to sound to stern but failing.
" Okay daddy." I say with an eye roll.
I get out of the car with him following close behind me, going to his backyard.
" I can't believe you called your dad, daddy." He says scrunching up his nose.
" Don't judge me." I pout hitting him on the shoulder.
" Didn't you say you had something to show me?" He asks, switching the subject off of my dead dad.
" Yeah go grab a flashlight Hansel, we're going into the woods." I say.
" The woods?" He asks curious.
" No questions, just go get the flash light." I say pushing him towards his house.
" Okay, I'm going!" He exclaims throwing his hands up in surrender.
I watch him walk into the back of his house, thinking about how this will be the first time in a while that I've been to the club house. I've been hanging out with Greg too much to have gone back there. Plus the memories still hurt, they were still pretty raw. At least I wouldn't be alone, kind of like Caleb hadn't been alone. That thought makes me turn bitter, I still can't believe he would do something like that to me. He always told me it was place just for us. I know he abandoned me but I never thought he would stoop this low. Greg finally comes back out out of the back door, tearing me from my depressing thoughts.
" Ready to go?" He asks with a wide grin, clicking the flash light in my face.
" Give me that, an All American boy such as yourself cannot handle such a device." I say annoyed, grabbing it out his hand.
" Well you couldn't handle me." He winks making me laugh.
" Trust me if I can handle Caleb, then I can definitely handle you." I wink back at him and weirdly he blushes.
" What can't take my hotness." I say cocky turning and walking to the woods.
" Hotness, more like cuteness." He says catching up with and pinching my cheek.
" Stop that!" I exclaim slapping his hand.
" What are you going doing about it, shorty." He teases still pinching my cheek.
" This." I say biting his finger and running away.
" Ow, you little shit!" He shouts running after.
I look back and he's not too far behind me. Unlike Caleb, he's almost as fast as me. I run until I near the club house, then I start to slow down until I'm down to a slow walk. Greg does the same we both stop for a second to catch our breath.
" Apologize to it." He says, holding his finger up to my face.
" I'm sorry, Greg's finger." I lean in,kissing his finger. When I pull back, I look up to see Greg turning red not looking me in the eyes.
" Well, let's go look at whatever you had to show me." He says. Turning around, walking hurriedly in the direction I had been leading him. I speed my pace up, taking the lead. We finally make it to the club house and I turn around to see his expression. His eyes are wide and his face is awe stricken.
" Wow, you built all this yourself?" He asks with disbelief.
" Not all by myself." I say a bitter smile on my face.
" Caleb?" He ask a sad expression taking over his face.
" Yeah it was just for me and him." I say, trying to erase him from my thoughts.
" Then why bring me?" He asks with a strange hopeful expression on his face.
" I'm going to admit it was for revenge." I say guilt taking over.
" Revenge?" He questions.
" Yeah he showed her." I say not even wanting to say their names.
" I'm sorry but two wrongs don't make a right." He says his hopeful expression falling.
" I know, I just wanted to get rid of those old memories, with you." I say the painful smile coming back in full force.
" Well, why don't you start by showing me the inside." He says shivering as the cold wind hits him.
" Sounds like a good idea to me." I say.
Taking his hand and for once I'm the one dragging someone to the club house. We get inside and I force the door closed. I make my way over to lantern and turn it on, since it's already getting dark out.
" Wow, you even have a bed in here!" He exclaims collapsing into the pile of pillows.
" Wait you have a bed." He says hopping up. Scrunching his nose up in disgust, he examines the blankets and pillows.
" Don't be a perv, we had a bed in here before we did that sort of thing." I say smacking the back of his head.
" I was just being cautious." He says holding his hands up in defeat.
" Whatever." I say with an eye roll.
We both precede to sit down and play a games of cards, that I left in the club house. We play for hours, laughing and taunting one another until it was dark out.
" I guess we better head back to my house." He says. He goes to open the door but when he does a strong gust of ice blows in making us shiver.
" Or maybe we just stay the night here." I point to to pile of blankets and pillows.
" Yeah, I don't really feel like going back out in the cold." He says with a shiver.
We both proceed to take off our heavy coats and slide under the blankets. We both fall asleep shortly afterwards, and I find myself shivering until someone pulls me close to their body. I wake up to someone shouting, groaning thinking it's my brother coming home drunk again. I reluctantly open my eyes, only to jump up at an angry Caleb.
"What the fuck is he doing here!" He shouts waking Greg up.
" I don't see how any of that is your business!" I snap, fully awake at his words.
" It's definitely my business!" He shouts.
" No you made it not your business, when you chose her over me!" I yell.
He storms out of the club house at my words. I run after him telling Greg to stay inside.
" You don't get to be mad!" I yell as I catch up to him.
" Yes I do,how could you show him our special place!" He shouts his face turning red.
" The same way you showed Jessica!" I snap not believing his hypocrisy.
" What the fuck are you talking about!" He snaps back looking at me,confused.
" I heard her talking today about you taking her to a special place!" I yell. Hating how he's playing dumb.
" She meant my father's new hunting cabin he bought." He says with pain in his eyes. His words shoot guilt to my heart.
" You really think I would do that?" He asks clearly hurt by my accusation.
" I don't know, you love to cause me pain." I whisper tired of yelling.
" If you think that, then you don't know me." He whispers tears building up in eyes.
" I guess I don't." I whisper brokenly.
He shakes his head walking away into the freezing wind, and I let him. For once, I'm the one who hurt him. I thought I would feel some sort of satisfaction but I only feel pain. I walk back to the club house, to Greg who's waiting with his arms wide opens. I fall into them but I feel no comfort as I break down. Wishing instead that it was the boy who I let walk away.
