Chapter XXVI

People had gathered at Cape Caem. Hunters, reporters, and normal citizens alike had flocked to the area to experience the strange tremors for themselves. Iris and Talcott were among them. They stood around the edge of the cape, gazing out at the ocean view. The ground shook under their feet, causing them to stumble. Unlike the past quakes, this one didn't stop. It only got stronger and lasted several minutes before finally stopping. People had swarmed around the two, trying to find the cause.

Suddenly, a huge clawed hand rose up and gripped into the ground, tearing apart the white fence along the cliff edge. People gasped in surprise and backed away. Another claw came up before an enormous creature emerged. A dragon with pale silver scales that glowed with a dim light now towered over the people. The beast let out a roar, spreading her vast wings.

The Regalia parked beside the road and a sudden roar could be heard from the cape. "No, it couldn't be..." Lorelai said, recognizing the noise. Her eyes widened slightly. "Purnima?"

She jumped out of the car, seeing a lot of movement past all the trees. She took off running with her friends right behind her. She stopped in her tracks once she made it past the trees, seeing the creature for herself.

"Purnima..." she breathed out with shock.

She thought her kingdom's guardian had been killed ten years ago. It was hard to believe that she was alive, but there she was, clinging to the edge of the cape. Though her scales barely gave off any light, showing just how much her power had weakened. The dragon also seemed to be enraged. She slammed her talons against the ground and flared her wings, snarling at the people who backed away in fear.

"Miserable little worms!" she roared, her words spoken in human language. "Everything I worked to create has been wiped out! Now my power has all but diminished because of you humans! I should just kill you all where you stand!"

Lorelai rushed forward, pushing her way through the crowds of people until she stood alone before the dragon. "Purnima!"

The dragon jerked her head down, her sky blue eyes locking onto the girl. Her growls ceased and her rage subsided. Lorelai's friends could only watch on from the crowds. Purnima lowered her head to the girl.

"Lorelai. I knew I sensed your presence. Seems you survived after all."

Lorelai latched onto the dragon's snout, hugging her as tears began forming in her eyes. "I thought you were gone. I thought everything was gone."

"Do not cry, young one. Your people need you to be strong."

"How do you know?" Lorelai asked, pulling away from the creature.

"Because their spirits are here with me. I can feel them." Lorelai's eyes were wide. "We have much to discuss, you and I."

Lorelai hung her head down. "Everbody leave," she commanded toward the silent crowds. She looked back at them all and yelled, "Get out of here!"

When no one budged, Purnima let out a roar directed at them, scaring them into running away. The only people remaining were Lorelai's friends, which she didn't mind. Iris took Talcott by the arm, realizing that Lorelai most likely wanted privacy.

"We'll... be waiting at the house," she quietly told her brother before leading the young boy away.

Lorelai gazed up at Purnima. "I... I have so many questions. How did you survive? Did anyone else make it?"

A low, rumbling chuckle reverberated from the beast's throat. "I think it would be easier to show you."

Lorelai nodded and glanced back at the boys. "Is it alright if my friends see too?"

"If you wish for them to."

"Lora, you don't have to get us involved in your family affairs," Noctis told her. "This is your own business."

She smirked slightly. "You guys got involved when you became my friends. Now get over here."

The four complied to Lorelai's demand and approached her. The girl was aware of the extent of the dragon's magic and knew she could show them what happened in the past. The group watched as Purnima's vast wings encircled them, creating a dome that blocked out most of the sun's light. The dragon gazed down at the five. A dim glow emitted from her wings, showing images of the past. The first showed when Siderum was attacked.

"When imperial forces broke through the magic barrier of our kingdom, your mother and I fought to defend our home." The images played like a movie for the group to watch. "We both knew in the back of our minds that there was no hope for Siderum. That's why your mother arranged for you to flee with your advisor. Queen Ailey was murdered and my light was absorbed from my body by those magitek weapons."
She snarled at the picture of the spear-like weapons protruding from her body.

"When Siderum fell, so did everything with it, including myself. I sank into the depths of the ocean, my body weak from the battle." The images illustrated the dragon's ordeal. "I managed to create a barrier around myself, a cocoon of sorts, and I fell into a deep slumber. But my magic wouldn't last forever, and once it gave out mere days ago, I swam my way here. Seems my nap didn't help me recover, for my light is dimming still."

"But isn't there a way I can help you?" Lorelai questioned. "You're the last of my family that's left. I'll give you my light."

Lorelai didn't even realize that she was crying. She desperately rushed to Purnima's large talons and placed her hands against them. She remembered what she had done with the quetzalcoatl. Her light magic had somehow entered its body. That's exactly what she tried to do then.

"Lorelai." Purnima nudged the girl's hands off her. "I'm afraid there's nothing you can do for me. My light is steadily fading and you cannot stop it."

"But I don't want you to die!" she argued. "I need you to stay here with me!"

"Enough!" Purnima growled. "You can't stop the inevitable. But before my passing, I can give you wisdom. I will show you everything you need to know. Are you prepared to see it all?" Lorelai steadily nodded. A life-size picture of Ardyn appeared on one of her wings. "Beware the man of darkness, the stealer of light. Do not fall prey to him."

In the next instant, the image of Ardyn held a sword and thrust it forward toward the group. The sound of the blade piercing something followed by a muffled gasp was heard. Lorelai's eyes widened. This was the moment he killed her mother. She watched with watery eyes.

"My sincerest apologies for having to do things this way, Your Majesty," he said, a smile on his face. "But I'm afraid your magic is just too much to contain." He yanked the blood-covered sword out. "But don't worry about your daughter. I'll keep an eye on her for you. She will be the key that I need."

The event faded away and Purnima spoke again, "Ailey was strong with her magic. She would've been used for her power. But you became an easier target. Inheriting the light magic of your mother and being a mere child at the time, the man of darkness set his sights on you."

"But why?" Noctis blurted out. "Why is Ardyn targeting her too?"

"That, I do not know, young prince," she responded, noticing the surprise on the man's face. "Yes, I know who you are. I sense your power. You are a target as well, are you not?" Noctis didn't respond. "Lorelai, I have one last thing for you. It's a message from your mother."

Lorelai's eyes grew wide again and she watched as another life-size image appeared. This one was her mother. With long black hair falling to her hips, blue eyes, and one of the beautiful dresses she normally wore, she looked a lot like Lorelai only older.

"Lorelai, if you're seeing this, then something must've happened. I must be... well..." She smiled kindly. "I just want you to know, that no matter where you are, I'll always be with you." Lorelai approached the image. "I know that it'll be hard at times to carry on when it seems like the world is against you, but don't you ever give up. I want you to grow up and live a full life, don't let the weight of the past bring you down." Ailey held her hand out, still smiling. "I will always love you, Lorelai."

Tears poured out of Lorelai's eyes and she slowly reached out, pressing her palm against her mother's. "I love you too... mother."

The picture faded and Lorelai leaned her forehead against Purnima's wing. She couldn't stop the tears or the sobs and hiccups that overtook her. Purnima retracted her other wing, allowing sunlight in. The guys went over to Lorelai, Prompto placing a hand on her shoulder.

"Lora..." he mumbled.

"Don't cry, young Lorelai," the dragon said.

The girl pulled her head away and looked up at the beast. "When... When did you two do that?"

"It was Ailey's idea. She rehearsed it for me many times when you weren't around, in case anything ever happened to her. She wanted to give you the encouragement to move on."

"Well..." Lorelai wiped her eyes. "It worked. I'm going to continue helping people here in Lucis. I'd also... like to get stronger with my magic. Maybe I'll be able to save you and many others with my light."

"You don't need to waste your energy on me. You should save it for those who need it. But I have no control over your actions."

Lorelai looked down at her own hands. "Could my mother... calm monsters?" She thought back on when she calmed the quetzalcoatl.

"She could, among other things." Purnima's eyes widened slightly. "You've done it before, haven't you?"

She nodded and Prompto said, "Oh, that's what happened with that quetzalcoatl!"

Lorelai glanced at him before staring up at Purnima. "Tell me more about that."

"It is a very powerful ability," the dragon explained. "You can transfer light into a living creature. It purges the darkness within them, calming or healing them. But should you use it on a daemon, it will die, for their entire being is nothing but darkness."

Lorelai thought for a moment. "I'll practice with my magic. I'll get stronger. Then..." She looked up at the beast. "I'll come back to help you."

Purnima gave a single nod, knowing she couldn't control the girl's actions. Lorelai felt emotionally unstable. With more tears threatening to fall, she turned and walked away from Purnima and her friends, heading toward Iris and Talcott's place.
