Chapter XXII

Lorelai was having a nice walk along the dock that was vacant of ships. She breathed in the crisp, salty air of the sea. The star covered sky was a beautiful sight. But knowing she was to meet up with Prompto, she reluctantly headed back toward the restaurant. A sudden whistle caused her to stop in her tracks. Her eyes darted over to the man sitting on one of the benches near the docks. He eyed her with a flirty grin.

"Hey there," he greeted. "What's a pretty little thing like you doin' around these parts?"

"I'm here with some friends," she replied suspiciously.

The man stood and approached her. "Oh, I see. A party girl, eh? The name's Dino, by the way."

"Lorelai." The girl quickly turned on her heel. "Excuse me, but I've got to go."

Dino suddenly grabbed her arm, forcing her to stop and look at him. "Wait just a minute, doll. How's about we get some grub while we're here?"

Lorelai frowned. "No thank you. I have plans. Now let go."

She jerked her arm out of his grip and swiftly walked away. Lorelai went straight to their room where the boys were playing cards. Prompto immediately placed his cards on the table and stood up with a smile.

"Hey, Lora, ready to get something to eat?"

She nodded, feeling her stomach growl. "Yeah, I'm getting really hungry."

"Me too." Prompto went to her side and held out a hand. "Shall we go, m'lady?"

Lorelai giggled at him and took his hand. "Let's."

Prompto grinned and led her out of the room. He took her over to the Mother of Pearl and sat her down with him at a table. A waiter came to take their order. They both ordered Steamed Crab with Rock Salt. The waiter quickly returned with their food. Lorelai cut a piece of crab and placed it in her mouth. She hummed with delight.

"This is delicious. What's the occasion?"

Prompto nervously laughed. "Oh, y-y'know, just wanted to spend a little time with you."

"Well, I'm very flattered."

The whole time the two ate, they talked and laughed. Prompto spied the other three guys dining at the other end of the restaurant, but he didn't point them out to Lorelai. Instead, he wanted her complete focus. He knew this was a big opportunity to spend time with her without his friends butting in, and he wanted to keep it that way.

"So, the cat followed Noct around for days," Prompto explained, laughing a bit at the memory. "From school to home for nearly a week."

Lorelai laughed. "Aww, that's so cute! You two really have a soft spot for animals."

"Can't help it. They're just too adorable. What about you? Do you like animals?"

Lorelai thought about the question for a moment. "I have to admit, I do. I especially love chocobos. But even the wild beasts of Lucis are cool creatures in my opinion."

Prompto tilted his head to the side in confusion. "But your a hunter. You kill monsters."

"Yes, but only the ones that have become a problem," she told him. "There was this one time I saw a mother sabertusk with her pups, and I completely avoided them. There was no way I could kill juveniles."

The blond smiled. "I wouldn't be able to do that either. But there are lots of people who actually favor certain monsters. In fact, our little buddy Talcott's quite a fan of cactuars."

Lorelai groaned. "Don't even mention those little pin cushions."

Prompto chuckled. "Don't like cactuars?"

The girl shook her head. "Not at all. Have you ever faced one in battle? Most annoying opponents ever."

Prompto laughed. Once finished eating, Lorelai reached into her pouch for the gil when Prompto held a hand out to stop her. "Don't worry about it. I've got it."

"That's alright, Prompto, I can afford my own meal."

"Nah ah, I invited you," the boy argued. "I insist on paying."

Lorelai eventually gave in. "Okay, fine. Thank you, Prompto."

Truthfully, Prompto had borrowed the gil from his friends. He normally wouldn't pay for other people, but for Lorelai, he could be very generous. Not to mention that his friends instructed him on proper behavior and that paying for the lady was of utmost importance. Lorelai suddenly spotted Dino approaching their table with a cocky grin. He stopped in front of them, leaning his hand against their table.

"Dino?" Prompto questioned.

Dino only glanced at the blond, his gaze focusing on Lorelai. "Hey, doll, ya didn't mention you knew the prince's pals."

The girl boredly rested her chin in her palm. "Must've slipped my mind. Now beat it."

Dino chuckled and held his hands up defensively. "Take it easy, doll. Sheesh, you are one tough dame. I can take a hint. But if you're ever interested in jewelry, I'm your man. See youse guys around."

He turned and walked away, casually waving while heading toward the chef, Coctura. Prompto gazed over at the girl across the table. "And how do you know Dino?"

Lorelai huffed. "He thought he could hit on me at the docks earlier."

"Son of a bitch," Prompto muttered under his breath.

"What was that?" Lorelai asked, not quite hearing what he said.

"Oh, uh, I was just thinking that you must've had a lot of admirers back in your kingdom," he lied. It wasn't really a subject he wanted to bring up, but he didn't want the girl to get suspicious of his jealousy. "Being a princess and all."

Lorelai smiled softly with a hum. "Yeah, some. But I was too young at the time for anything to really happen." She then leaned back in her chair, twirling a strand of hair around her finger. "Besides, my mother wouldn't allow it. She always told me that they weren't good enough for me."

"Oh..." Prompto frowned, his mood dropping. "Your mother sounds... strict."

Lorelai noticed his sudden change in attitude and quickly explained, "No, no, she was a wonderful person and cared so much for my well-being. I think she just didn't want an idiot to become the next king of Siderum. Of course, we don't have to worry about that now, huh?" She hung her head down. "They're all gone now, and my status means nothing anymore."

Silence fell over the two briefly before Prompto sighed. "I'm sorry for bringing it up. We can just go back to the room if you-"

"No," Lorelai interrupted, reaching a hand out to place on his arm. "It's okay. Why don't we go for a walk?"

Prompto smiled slightly and nodded. They both stood and Lorelai took Prompto's hand, leading him down to the docks where it was quiet. The two gazed out at the ocean view. Though Lorelai was enjoying it, Prompto still felt down about what she told him. If the girl's mother were still alive, there was no way she'd accept someone like Prompto, a mere commoner, to be with her daughter. He felt like someone like him could never be good enough for a girl as wonderful as her and that maybe he should go back to chasing Cindy.

Lorelai looked over at the blond, noticing the frown on his lips. "Prompto..." She placed a hand on his arm, causing him to look at her. "I hope you don't think poorly of yourself because of what I said."

Prompto stared at her in shock. She immediately knew what was wrong before he could even speak. The thought of forgetting about her was completely erased from his mind. He knew he wouldn't be able to suppress his feelings no matter how hard he tried. He was falling hard for this girl and nothing would be able to change that.

Lorelai smiled her beautiful smile that always seemed to ease his mind. "I assure you, a simple status means nothing to me. I may have once been royalty, but that's not going to keep me from hanging out with any of you. I'm not any better than anyone else." She then giggled to herself. "Besides, you could've come crawling out of the mud for all I care, I'd still be your friend."

Prompto grinned and laughed lightly. "Okay, I get it, I'm not the loser that I see myself as... Thanks, Lora." He paused, turning his gaze to the vast ocean. "To be honest, I'm kinda used to it already. Noct is a prince, and yet he's my best friend. He uses the same logic as you when it comes to those he's closest to."

The two stared out at the night sky and ocean view. A comfortable silence had fallen over them and they spent what felt like hours standing out there, side by side. Prompto finally turned his gaze to the girl beside him, a smile on his face. Lorelai was so lost in the scenery that she didn't even notice. Prompto reached over, placing a hand against the side of her face and turning her head to face him. She watched him questioningly. With his free hand, he lightly brushed her bangs out of the way so he could clearly see both of her eyes. He was mesmerized by her bright green orbs flecked with bits of blue.

"Y'know, I just realized how beautiful your eyes are," he complimented.

Lorelai's eyes darted to the side, her face heating up in embarrassment. "Prompto..." She placed her hand over his and gently pulled it away from her face. She smiled shyly. "Thanks. Times like these I feel like a princess again."

Prompto's usual goofy grin spread across his lips. "C'mon, why don't we take a picture to commemorate this night?"

Lorelai nodded. "Okay."

Prompto took hold of his camera, holding it out to face the two. He then gingerly wrapped an arm around the girl's shoulder and leaned against her so that they'd both fit into the shot. They both grinned, and with a click, Prompto had gotten a selfie with Lorelai in it. Happy with the photo and the night's events, the two headed back to their room. There, they saw the other three men playing King's Knight on their phones.

"Hey, you guys have fun?" Noctis asked, only glancing up from his phone for a second.

"Hell yeah," the blond responded. "We had a great time."

"We sure did," Lorelai agreed. She then stretched her arms. "I'm kind of tired out now though. I'm going to take a quick bath and head straight to bed."

Lorelai went to the bathroom, shutting the door behind her. At that moment, Gladiolus looked up at the blond with a smirk. "Hope you kept your hands to yourself, Prompto."

"Course I did!" he half yelled. "It wouldn't be right to do that to a girl!"

"At least without her consent," Noctis added, his eyes still glued to his phone screen.

Ignis sighed at the prince and shield, his eyes locking onto the boy. "I trust everything went smoothly, then?"

"Uh... Pretty much," Prompto replied.

After a short while, the bathroom door opened and Lorelai came out. She yawned and tiredly gazed at the boys. "Okay, so where am I sleeping?"

"You can take one of the beds," Gladio answered with a smile. "We'll work out the rest of the sleeping arrangements."

Lorelai graciously climbed into one of the beds. The four men played King's Knight to determine who got the other bed. Ignis claimed the bed while the other three made due with the chairs or floor. With a lamp next to her, Lorelai quickly dozed off. Their little vacation had been fun, but she was eager to get back out on the road and take on hunts again. Now accepting her painful past, the girl was ready to move forward, and with her friends by her side, she knew she'd be able to overcome whatever obstacles she might face.
