Chapter XLII
The following morning after breakfast, Prompto looked around for the girl. "Has anyone seen Lora?"
"I believe she slipped out right after breakfast," Ignis informed him.
Noctis smirked. "Now's your chance to go tell her while she's off by herself."
Gladio chuckled. "Go get her, loverboy."
Prompto nodded with determination. "Yeah, okay."
"Aww, that's so cute!" Iris gushed. "You two will be so sweet together!"
Prompto quickly left before he had to listen to anymore comments. He went outside and looked around. He finally spotted the girl around the side of the house. She stood in front of the white fence along the edge of the cape. Prompto gulped, his courage fading at the sight of her. She was so perfect. How could she ever accept someone like him? He pushed away the negative thoughts and slowly approached her. He could now see that she was staring down at her open locket.
"Hey, Lora," he greeted, causing her to turn her head to glance at him. "What're you doing out here?"
He stopped and stood beside her as she stared down at her mother's picture. "Just... thinking."
"Bout what?"
She sighed, refusing to meet his gaze. "About... where I should go from here."
The blond's eyes widened. "You're not thinking of parting ways, are you?"
"I don't know. Guess it depends on what I plan to do."
"Does this have anything to do with Purnima?" She turned her head away. Prompto placed a hand on the side of her face and made her meet his gaze. "Lora, you know you can tell me what's on your mind."
She smiled lightly, placing a hand over his. "I know." Her eyes darted to the side and her smile faded. "It's just... It seems like everything I do costs me someone I care about. That's why I don't want to go to Luminis, because I'm afraid of losing someone else."
Prompto's eyes widened. "Lora, it's not you. Sometimes these things just happen." He placed his free hand over hers that held the locket. He closed it before clutching her hand. "Everyone you lost - it was never your fault. Your decisions or actions had nothing to do with what happened to them." He grinned. "And I can guarantee that you won't be losing us anytime soon. We're tough enough to hold our own no matter the circumstance."
Lorelai smiled, the blond's hand drifting away from her face and back to his side. She gripped his other hand in her own and turned to look out at the view. Silence fell over the two momentarily, but their hands stayed connected. Prompto took sideways glances over at the girl, admiring her. Her black hair swayed in the sea breeze and her eyes seemed to shine with new hope. The gunman gulped, thinking over his next words carefully.
"L-Lora, I have a bit of a c-confession to make." She looked over at him with a smile, humming in response. "When you were unconscious, I had to give you an elixir... uh, m-mouth to mouth." His face was heating up. "E-Ever since, I haven't been able to stop thinking about it." Lorelai lightly traced her fingertips over her lips, oblivious to what had transpired while she was unconscious. Prompto gulped, noticing the shock on her face. "I guess what I'm trying to say is... I-I like you, a lot. I really really really like you, Lora."
He was surprised to suddenly hear her giggle at him. She squeezed his hand. "Prompto, I sort of already knew."
"Huh? You... did?"
She smiled. "Well yeah, you weren't very discreet, and I wasn't born yesterday. It was a bit obvious."
"Then why didn't you say anything?"
She grinned slyly. "I wanted to see if you had the guts to bring it up."
He suddenly placed both his hands on the sides of her face, staring straight into her eyes. "Seriously though, I really like you, Lorelai." His serious tone caught her off guard. He lightly brushed her bangs out of the way. "I get lost every time I look into your eyes. Your smile always brightens my day. You're the most beautiful girl I've ever met, inside and out."
Lorelai was stunned this time. All she could do was stare into his blue orbs and mutter, "P-Prompto..."
"So, do you... like me too?" he sheepishly asked.
Lorelai removed his hands from her face and leaned closer, pecking his lips. "Does that answer your question? You've done so much for me, how could I not like you?"
Prompto grinned with glee, feeling his heart skip a beat. He gingerly snaked an arm around her waist, pulling her closer until she was right against him. His other hand gently took the side of her face. Lorelai's hands rested on his shoulders, a light pink now tinting her cheeks as well. The two leaned in, their eyes fluttering shut as their lips met. Just as before, Prompto enjoyed the softness of her lips against his own. It was pure bliss for both of them. It felt like everything around them had melted away as their lips moved against one another's. When they pulled back, they stayed in that position, gazing into each other's eyes.
"Does this mean we're officially together?" the blond asked.
Lorelai laughed lightly. "I should hope so or we've both got a lot of explaining to do."
Prompto laughed too before wrapping both arms securely around her waist and lifting her up, happily spinning around with her. After setting her back on her feet, he leaned in for another kiss. He made sure he was gentle with her. She was the kind of girl he never wanted to hurt. After pulling back, Prompto rested his forehead against hers.
"Now that I've got you in my arms, I don't wanna let you go," he said in a somewhat sad tone. "Feels like I'll wake up from a dream and you'll disappear."
The girl smiled reassuringly. "It's not a dream, and I'm not going anywhere." She pecked his cheek. "I promise."
He smiled and reluctantly released her. She took his hand instead, their fingers intertwining. With his other hand, he took hold of his camera. He held it up in front of them for a picture. Lorelai was quick to place her lips against his cheek right as he pressed the button. He successfully captured the image and put his camera away.
"Wanna go for a walk down to the shop?" he asked.
She smiled and nodded. "Sure."
The two took a leisurely walk down the path and to the road. The woman with her truck of items was there. She greeted her potential customers. Lorelai and Prompto skimmed through her wares when something caught the girl's eye.
"Is that...?" She picked up the object. It was a piece of wood carved into the shape of a dragon and painted white. She stared at the figure in her hand. "Purnima?" she mumbled.
Prompto frowned slightly, noticing the small statue. Before he could speak, the shop owner said, "You're in luck. That's the last one of those."
Lorelai looked at her. "What is it?"
"Why, it's a figure of the dragon at the cape. That beautiful creature became such an attraction that I decided to sell a little merchandise of her to the tourists. I made those little trinkets myself. Unfortunately, there won't be anymore on account of the dragon's death. And her body is gone now too, mostly likely fallen into the ocean, poor thing."
Lorelai silently nodded, staring down at the wood carving with a sorrowful expression. Prompto fished out some gil from his pocket and handed it to the woman.
"We'll take it."
Lorelai looked at him in surprise. He smiled and took her free hand, walking her away from the shop.
"Prompto, you didn't have to get this for me."
"I wanted to," he replied. "I saw that look on your face. Losing Purnima took its toll on you. So I figured, maybe having a reminder of her would make you feel a bit better."
She smiled. "It does. Thank you, Prompto."
The two walked back to the house, hand in hand. There, they saw their friends outside talking. Gladiolus smirked upon seeing them.
"About time you two got back," he said. "You were gone for quite a while."
"We just headed down to the shop," Prompto replied.
Iris noticed the figure in Lorelai's hand and walked over to her. "Is that Purnima?"
Lorelai nodded. "Yeah. I had no idea they were selling them. This was the last one."
"Does this mean you're feeling better today?" Noctis asked.
She smiled. "I'm feeling a lot better, thank you."
"I think a certain someone had something to do with that," the shield commented, eyeing the gunman.
Lorelai laughed. "Maybe."
Iris then smiled and took hold of Lorelai's arm. "Lori, what do you say we hang out tonight, just us girls?"
Lorelai smiled at the brunette. "Sounds like fun. I'm definitely in."
"Hey, what about me?" Talcott questioned.
Iris thought on it briefly. "Hmm... I guess you can join us, if you don't mind having a makeover."
Talcott frowned slightly. "O-On second thought, I'd better read through more of grandpa's notebook. There could be important information for Prince Noctis."
Everyone laughed lightly at that. The depressing mood had finally lifted. The group knew that there would still be many trials ahead of them, but for now, they would relax and just enjoy themselves. For Lorelai, just being able to spend time with her friends and her new boyfriend set her mind at ease. She knew that Purnima was right - that she would one day be reunited with her mother and her people again. But for now, she had others who needed and wanted her there, and she certainly wasn't going to leave them anytime soon.
