Chapter XIX
Lorelai's eyes opened and she realized she was lying on a bed. She turned her head, seeing Ignis cooking while Prompto sat on the other bed. Looking around, she recognized the interior of a caravan. She figured they must have rented it for the night.
"Lora, you're up," Prompto said, sending her a smile. "You passed out for a moment there."
"You should take an elixir to restore your energy," Ignis told her, still stirring the pot in front of him.
Lorelai's eyes landed on the curative lying on the bedside table next to her. She slowly sat up and took it, gulping it down. She instantly felt much better. She carefully scooted to the edge of the bed. Prompto hurriedly got up and took her arm, helping her to her feet.
"Take it easy now," the blond said.
Lorelai smiled. "Thanks. Is everybody okay?"
"Perfectly fine," Ignis answered. "Your barrier kept everyone safe. Fortunately, the lights were repaired just in time."
The girl's memory was refreshed upon hearing that. She remembered that her light wall was shattered, and that Emma was by her side when it happened. "I... I still can't believe I managed to do that," she muttered, glancing down at her hands. "I've never created a barrier that big before. Though its light was dulled so much that the daemons weren't even afraid."
"Still, if it weren't for your magic wall, we all would've been done for," Prompto stated. "Plus, it was still really awesome." He grinned.
"By the way, Noct and Gladio are outside, along with that child you rescued," Ignis informed her.
Lorelai smiled and rushed past the two and out the door. She immediately saw Emma and her mother with her other two friends. Emma's eyes landed on Lorelai, and the young girl ran to her, hugging her leg.
"Lady, you're okay! I was so worried about you!"
Lorelai smiled and kneeled down to look at the girl, placing her hands on the child's shoulders. "Emma, I'm fine. And you can call me Lorelai instead of lady."
Emma nodded. "Okay, Lorelai! Thank you for saving us! Mommy told me that you hunters would keep us safe, and you did! You're my hero! I wanna be just like you one day!"
Called by her mother, Emma walked over and took her hand. The pair walked away, waving back at Lorelai and the boys. Lorelai stood and waved back, her smile faltering. Prompto laughed, approaching the girl's side.
"She really looks up to you, huh?"
The raven-haired girl hung her head down. "Yeah, but I'm no hero."
"Nonsense." Noctis came over, placing a hand on her shoulder. "You saved a lot of people tonight. That's no small feat."
"I guess."
"C'mon, Iggy's probably about done with supper," Gladio said, walking past the group.
Everyone headed back inside and enjoyed one of Ignis's delectable meals before bed. That night, Lorelai found herself trapped in another nightmare. She didn't know why she was being plagued with dreams involving her past. It seemed like ever since she started hanging around the guys, those nightmares kept haunting her. Her current dream was a replay of the night Siderum fell to Niflheim. The death of the queen and guardian dragon, the entire kingdom sinking beneath the sea, darkness blanketing the sky, the young princess alone in a foreign land - it all occurred exactly as it did ten years ago.
"Stop it!" Lorelai screamed as she jolted out of her dream.
The boys were startled awake, Prompto tumbling onto the floor with Noctis nearly following. "What?!" the blond yelled in surprise.
Ignis snatched his glasses and placed them on his face. "Lora, whatever is the matter?!"
Lorelai panted, wiping away the cold sweat that had formed on her forehead. She looked at each of the men who now stared at her, tired and confused. "J-Just a bad dream, that's all. I'm sorry I woke you guys."
Gladio scratched his head and yawned. "Seems like a lot of crap's been happening lately. You might just be under a load of stress."
"Yep," the prince tiredly agreed. "I think we could all use a break from tomb hunting and monster fighting."
Prompto gasped, climbing back onto his bed with a grin. "We should totally go to Galdin!"
Ignis sighed. "I suppose the tombs aren't going anywhere. Just a couple of days to relax and unwind couldn't hurt. It definitely isn't healthy to weigh yourself down with stressful situations."
"I guess a little time off would be okay," Gladio agreed.
Lorelai paused momentarily. If there was one place she avoided the most, it was Galdin Quay. She had visited it once and couldn't stop crying. The beautiful beach view reminded her too much of her home. That was the one place that could instantly make her homesick.
"Guys, it's okay," she argued. "We don't have to go to Galdin. We've got important things to do, and a vacation would just be a waste of time. I'll be fine, really."
"C'mon, Lora, it'll be fuuun," Prompto urged in a sing-song voice.
Noctis yawned. "I'm in charge. We're going tomorrow. End of discussion."
The grumpy prince laid back down in his bed. The others soon followed his lead, eager to get back to their sleep that was abruptly disturbed. But while Lorelai tried to doze off again, she kept thinking of the depressing mood she was in for at the beach. The following morning, the gang ate breakfast and headed out on the road toward Galdin. They had quite a drive ahead of them. Lorelai sat between Noctis and Gladio, like usual.
"You know, there are plenty of other places to visit for a bit of rest," she said, hoping to possibly change their minds.
Prompto looked back at her from his seat. "Yeah, but nothing says 'relaxation' like the beach. Plus, the scenery there is picture perfect."
"But shouldn't we be searching for the royal tombs or something?" Lorelai questioned.
"Well, we don't exactly know where the remaining tombs even are," Ignis replied. "Until we have a lead on another one's location, there's no point in aimlessly searching every possible place in Lucis."
Lorelai thought of another point to bring up. "But are we going to have the gil for all of this? Rooms and food at Galdin are pretty pricey."
"We should have enough," Gladio stated.
"And if not, camping and Ignis's cooking is always optional," Noctis said.
"Speaking of cooking, you guys have gotta try Lora's cooking," Prompto boasted. "She's about as good as Ignis."
"Perhaps you can help me serve up something spectacular, then," Ignis told the girl with a small smile. "It'll be nice to have someone help out from time to time."
Lorelai smiled and nodded. "You've got it, Iggy."
"Hey, I help too. I set the table," Prompto stated, proudly pointing a thumb at himself.
Lorelai couldn't help but laugh at him. "Oh yeah, like the table is such a big part of fixing a meal," she sarcastically replied, rolling her eyes.
Gladio chuckled. "She's got ya there, Prompto."
Lorelai smirked and nudged the muscular man. "You're not one to talk, Gladio. I assume you and Noct don't lift a finger to help out."
It was Prompto's turn to laugh this time. Noctis only shrugged. "Hey, I did my time. Cooking just isn't my thing."
Lorelai looked the prince up and down. "Yeah, I can see that. You don't seem like the chefly type. But what do you mean you 'did your time'?"
Ignis chuckled. "Believe it or not, His Highness worked in a restaurant for a short time."
Lorelai laughed and nudged Noctis. "A prince working in a restaurant? I never thought I'd hear of royalty having such a... simple job."
"What was your life like, Lora?" Prompto asked. "You know, before all the... bad stuff happened."
Lorelai smiled, knowing Prompto didn't want to mention the fall of Siderum. "Well, most days I spent being tutored by my advisor, Verity." She remembered it all so clearly. "She taught me history, geography, you name it. I basically learned most things a normal school taught. But in my free time, I enjoyed playing games with some of the servant children, I read books in the library, sometimes Verity would take me out into the city or the beach."
"Sounds like the happy childhood of a princess," Prompto cheerfully commented.
"Just out of curiosity, whatever happened to all those magiteks?" Gladio asked out of curiosity. "They were created by Solheim, right? Did Siderum carry on with their production?"
Lorelai shook her head. "No. After the fall of Solheim, we abandoned the construction of magiteks. I guess you could say we had better things to build, like our city and towns."
Gladio nodded in understanding. The group continued chatting and laughing. Lorelai thoroughly enjoyed telling the boys about her kingdom. Since Siderum and its people were gone, there was no one else to remember the place. Sharing her memories with her friends felt great and aided in her relaxation. She only hoped that Galdin's view wouldn't bring back the painful parts of her past.
