Chapter XIV
Lorelai and Prompto were once again following the road on the back of their chocobos. They were nearing the Vesperpool when they saw a trio of people on the side of the rode, waving to them. They slowed their chocobos and stopped to speak with the people, who Lorelai quickly recognized as hunters.
"Is something wrong?" Lorelai asked them, slight worry on her face.
"You headin' up to the Vesperpool?" one of the men questioned. Lorelai nodded. "Then be careful. There's a behemoth hanging around up there."
"A behemoth?!" Prompto exclaimed with surprise.
The woman of the group sighed. "Strange, right? It's not everyday you see a beast like that around these parts. Just wanted to warn y'all before ya go heading right to it."
"Is anyone going to hunt it?" Lorelai asked them.
The third man of the group smirked and pointed a thumb to himself. "That's what we're doin'. We'll take care of it."
The girl smiled kindly at them from atop Eclipse. "Okay then. Thanks for the warning, we'll be sure to avoid it. Good luck."
The two continued onward. "Hey, Lora, you sure we should keep going with a behemoth around?" the blond asked in a shaky voice.
"Don't worry, Prompto. We're not going to fight it. If we happen to spot it then we'll avoid it."
He didn't say anything else. Once at the Vesperpool, the two stopped and scanned the area, looking all around. They didn't see a trace of the behemoth. They urged their chocobos forward slowly, keeping a sharp eye out for any danger. The birds waded through the shallow swampy waters. Eclipse suddenly stopped in her tracks, shaking her head and chirping.
"What's the matter, girl?" Lorelai pet her head to try and calm her.
Suddenly, a mushussu leapt from a nearby bush straight at the black bird. Eclipse jumped backwards, avoiding the monster but knocking Lorelai off her back at the same time. The girl splashed into the shallow water and the mushussu targeted her. The beast lunged at her before she could comprehend what was happening.
"Lora!"
In an instant, Prompto hopped off his chocobo with his gun in hand. A gunshot rang out and the monster collapsed in the water at Lorelai's feet. She quickly stood, summoning her scythe, noticing two more of the beasts approaching Prompto from behind. She quickly rushed past him, slashing her blades at the monsters. Both mushussu were taken down. Lorelai sighed with relief, her weapon disappearing.
"Lora, you okay?" Prompto asked, walking over to the girl.
She turned to face him, smiling. "Yeah, thanks to you."
The blond laughed lightly. "Hey, you saved me too."
"That's true. We'll call it even." Lorelai looked around. "Looks like our chocobos bolted, I don't see them anywhere. Probably for the best if there's a behemoth around here."
"Yeah, wouldn't want anything to happen to our feathered friends."
Lorelai then turned her attention to her wet clothes and hair. "Ugh, and now I'm soaked."
She wrung the water from her hair, then she slipped off her vest and squeezed the water out of it. While she was shaking off the excess droplets of water from her vest, Prompto took notice of the picture on her upper back.
"Whoa, cool tattoo," he said.
Lorelai paused what she was doing, following his gaze toward her exposed back. "Oh, thanks. I always thought so too."
"Are those... wings?" he questioned, tilting his head to the side to try and see the symbol better.
"With a star under them, yes," she replied, slipping her damp vest back on.
The two began walking side by side when Prompto spoke again, "Why didn't you ever say you had a tattoo?"
She shrugged. "Nobody asked."
Prompto laughed lightly. "So, I'm just supposed to ask random questions, huh?"
The joking tone of his voice made Lorelai laugh too. "Yes, Prompto, I want you to ask whatever questions pop into your head," she sarcastically stated.
"Alrighty then. What's your favorite thing to do?"
Lorelai rolled her eyes but answered, "Adventuring, duh. You?"
Prompto grinned. "That's easy, journeying with my friends and recording the memories we make on my camera."
"Speaking of your camera, can I see some of the pictures you've taken?"
A tint of pink dusted his cheeks. "U-Um, sure, o-okay," he stuttered out.
He took hold of his camera and handed it to her. He leaned closer to her in order to see her flip through the photos. She saw many pictures of Prompto and the guys and there were a few with Iris and Talcott in them too. She then saw how he had even captured the zu on camera along with some other monsters they had faced. She finally ended up flipping through multiple pictures of herself.
From when he took a photo of her when they first met and rode in the Regalia to ones she had no idea he'd taken. There was one of her eating and chatting with Ignis, one of her and Iris dancing around, one of her facing off against the magiteks, and a few others too. Prompto's face turned redder than ever when he saw all the pictures of her that she was now looking through. Lorelai was a bit confused by how many there were.
"Why are there so many of me in here?" she asked him, her eyes never leaving the camera.
"Oh, u-uh..." Prompto nervously scratched the back of his neck. "B-Because you're our friend now and I really wanted some memorable photos of you too," he quickly explained, hoping she wouldn't think further into it. "S-Sorry that I didn't ask, I just like getting shots of my friends."
Lorelai smiled kindly at him. "No problem, I don't mind. These all look really good though."
"T-Thanks, I dig 'em too." He nervously laughed, mentally sighing with relief.
Handing him back his camera, Lorelai looked ahead of them, seeing some broken old stones and pillars. She knew they were close. The area was already beginning to look like ruins. She suddenly froze, spotting the behemoth not far ahead of them. Right as it turned its head toward them, Lorelai tackled Prompto to the ground right next to a fallen column. He opened his mouth to speak but the girl's hand covered his mouth, keeping him quiet. His eyes widened when he realized how close she was. He was on his back with Lorelai straddling his waist and her hand clamped over his mouth. Her face was inches from his own.
Lorelai gazed straight into his blue orbs, pressing a finger to her lips, silently telling him to stay quiet. Prompto nodded slightly, showing that he understood. He only hoped the girl couldn't feel the heat radiating off his cheeks. Feeling heavy footsteps approaching, the two both became tense. Hearing a low growl, their eyes darted to the side, seeing the huge muzzle of the beast looming over them. They both remained perfectly still and silent. After a moment, the behemoth turned and walked away, not noticing the humans hiding right under its nose.
Lorelai slowly released Prompto and sat up slightly, peering over the pillar at the monster stalking away through the swamp. "It's leaving," she informed him, still not budging from where she sat on him.
Prompto was a blushing mess. His eyes were locked onto the girl above him. "L-Lora, c-could you, um..." he stuttered out, unable to finish his sentence.
"Hmm?" Lorelai hummed, looking down at the boy. She quickly stood up off of him. "Oh, right. Sorry, Prompto."
The blond sat up and rose to his feet. "It's alright," he mumbled.
"Let's hurry before that behemoth comes back."
Prompto only nodded and followed the girl. They swiftly made their way closer and closer to the ruins. They finally got to the entrance. The area was enclosed with several stone columns lining the walkway that was submerged in shallow water. Lorelai's expression brightened and she hurried through the water with Prompto right behind her. At the end of the walkway, the two climbed up two small flights of stairs. Lorelai paused briefly at the top, staring at the wall in front of them.
"No, no, no," she muttered, gliding her hands across the stone. "This has to be it."
"Are you sure?" Prompto questioned, thinking maybe she had the directions wrong.
Lorelai didn't even glance back at him. She continued running her hands along the wall, hoping to find a hidden lever or switch. "I'm certain. This is the exact location Marco told me of." She suddenly stopped, letting her hands fall to her sides. "But he also said it only opens at certain times."
"So then what do we do? Wait around 'til it opens?" Prompto rested his hands on his belt, not keen on the idea.
Lorelai turned around to face him. "Yep." She sighed and seated herself on the edge of the steps, resting her elbow on her knees and her chin on her palm.
Prompto sat down beside her. "Seriously? We're gonna sit here until it opens? That could take forever." His voice became whiny.
"You're the one who wanted to tag along," Lorelai pointed out. "Besides, we're so close. I'm not leaving."
With the sky growing darker and darker, Lorelai summoned a light orb while Prompto turned on his light. The two sat quietly for a while, letting their combined light cast out the darkness. Prompto's rumbling stomach interrupted the silence.
"I'm sooo huuungry!" he complained, placing a hand over his empty stomach.
Lorelai giggled and dug into her pack, handing the blond a Cup Noodles. "Here, Prompto, I came prepared," she said, smiling as she began eating her own noodles.
Prompto dug in, eagerly slurping up the tasty meal. Once they were both finished, Prompto sighed happily and gazed up at the sky. "Hey, it looks like a clear sky tonight."
Lorelai squinted to try and see. "Really? I can't tell."
Prompto giggled at her. "That's 'cause you've got a light in your face, silly. If you put it out for a sec, you'd-"
"I'm good," the raven-haired girl interrupted. "It's just the sky. I can see it fine during the day."
"But the stars are out and everything," the blond argued. "C'mon, just for a minute. You gotta see it."
"No!" Lorelai nearly shouted at him.
A sly grin spread across the boy's face. "Oooh, I see what this is about." Lorelai looked at him fearfully. "You're scared of daemons attacking, aren't you?"
The girl rolled her eyes. "Give me a break, I hunt daemons all the time."
"Then why won't you put out your light?"
Lorelai nervously turned her face away. "Because I'm... I'm afr..." Her voice was so quiet and muffled that Prompto couldn't hear it all.
"What was that?"
Lorelai groaned. "I'm afraid of the dark, okay?!" she snapped, quickly hiding her face in her knees in embarrassment.
"You're... afraid of the dark?" Prompto questioned. "How can you, the Star, be scared of the dark?! You're one of the best hunters in Lucis!"
Lorelai kept her face hidden. "I'm not as strong as everyone thinks I am. No matter what people say, I'm still only human. I have fears and weaknesses just like anyone else."
Prompto could hear the sorrow in her tone and scooted closer. "Lora, I overreacted. It's not that big a deal. Everyone is scared of something, it's part of being alive." He placed a hand on her back, causing her to lift her head and meet his gaze. He smiled. "Trust me, put out your light. I'm right here with you."
His soft, comforting gaze eased her nerves. She took a deep breath and banished her light. She instantly covered her eyes with a whimper. Prompto gently took her hands and pulled them away from her face. Lorelai slowly opened her eyes, turning them up to the sky. She stared in awe at the shining stars above them. It had been so long since she'd really seen the night sky. In an instant, she realized the darkness around her and summoned multiple light orbs in a panic.
Prompto chuckled at her. "See? That wasn't so bad."
The two suddenly heard a sliding noise behind them. They both turned their heads, now seeing an entrance into the ruins. Lorelai hopped to her feet, a grin tugging at her lips. It seemed their patience had paid off.
