Chapter XI

The gang got out of the Regalia, looking around at the sights. Lorelai stretched her arms above her head. "You know, I don't get to ride in vehicles very often." She gazed down at the car lovingly and glided her hand across the side. "This car is amazing, and it's so stylish."

"Don't go falling for her now," Noctis joked. Lorelai rolled her eyes but couldn't help giggling at him.

"Let us go," Ignis instructed. "We passed a waterfall before arriving here. That must be the one Iris mentioned."

The group walked down the rode a short ways. They caught sight of the waterfall and a small flight of stairs that led down to a dirt path. They left the road and descended the stairs. They followed the dirt path around to an open area next to a river. With the rapid moving water, they knew it had to lead to the waterfall. The only problem was that a midgardsormr patrolled the area. The five quickly took cover among rocks and bushes, out of sight of the large snake.

"How are we supposed to get past that?!" Prompto quietly exclaimed. "It's huge!"

Ignis pushed up his glasses. "Best to avoid it. No need for unnecessary risks."

"What if it comes after us?" Noctis questioned.

"Then we kill it," Gladio answered simply.

Lorelai smirked. "Don't worry, I've dealt with these beasts before. Let's just say, my time as a hunter has taught me a few tricks. Here's the plan - stay behind me and don't make any sudden moves."

The four men nodded in understanding. They slowly came out from hiding and entered the area. Lorelai summoned her scythe and stayed between her friends and the monster. The serpent took notice of the trespassers in its territory. It slithered toward them, hissing and flicking its forked tongue. Lorelai concentrated and clutched her scythe tightly, imbuing it with her magic. After a moment, the blade on each end of the weapon had a white glow to it.

Lorelai held her weapon horizontally in front of her, and almost instantly, the midgardsormr froze and its hissing ceased. "Now, guys, go," the girl quietly ordered. The snake before her stared intently at the glow of the blades.

With the men all creeping away toward the waterfall, Lorelai slowly backed up, tilting her scythe from side to side. The serpent tilted its head each time the weapon did, following the movements precisely. With each step Lorelai took, the snake inched closer, watching the glow of the scythe. Everything was going as she planned.

"Lora, look out!"

The girl jumped in surprise at Prompto's voice. She looked back, seeing a shieldshears coming at her. She swiftly dodged its pincers and sliced them clean off. The hiss of the midgardsormr brought her attention back to it. It spit a stream of venom that Lorelai barely managed to roll out of the way of.

"Run!" she shouted to the boys.

The group took off toward the waterfall, dodging shieldshears as they fled from the snake and crab-like monsters. They finally stopped at a small path that led up to the side of the waterfall. Thankfully, the monsters hadn't followed them. They all caught their breath.

"Woohoo! We made it out alive!" Prompto cried happily.

"What was that you did back there, Lora?" Ignis asked, curious as to why the midgardsormr behaved so strangely. "You had that beast completely immobilized."

"I just used light magic to make my weapon glow," she answered, resting her hands on her hips. "I don't know why, but for some reason those overgrown earthworms are mesmerized by the light."

"That's weird," Noctis stated.

"Never mind that, I think I see a cave," Gladio pointed out.

The group followed the small path around to a cave entrance right behind the edge of the waterfall. Inside, the air instantly felt cooler, and with each step further, the temperature seemed to drop. Everyone turned on their lights while Lorelai created an orb of light in the palm of her hand, the lack of sunlight giving the cave a dark, eerie atmosphere. Lorelai shivered, noticing the others were beginning to feel the cold too. She watched the way the rock walls of the cave steadily became encased in ice as they traveled deeper inside.

"I think I've heard of this place," Lorelai said, breaking the silence. "The Greyshire Glacial Grotto, I believe it's called."

"Fitting name," Noctis commented.

"Why does it have to be so freakin' cold?!" Prompto whined, rubbing his hands together to try and warm them up.

"Wuss," Gladio stated with a stifled laugh.

Prompto ignored Gladio's comment. The group stopped at a tunnel-shaped slide made of solid ice. With nowhere else to go, Noctis took a careful step to the edge. Almost immediately, his foot slipped out from under him. Gladiolus instantly snatched his jacket to keep the prince from falling down the slope. Unfortunately, Gladio's feet also slipped on the ice and he lost his footing, falling with Noctis. Ignis, Prompto, and Lorelai grabbed on, but the weight of the two proved too much for them. All five went sliding down the slope.

The slide occasionally branched off into smaller tunnels and Lorelai found herself among them. At the end of her slide, she was dropped off into the middle of a group of imps. She landed on her feet and summoned her weapon, ready to fight. She suddenly heard the sound of something skidding on the ice behind her. She turned her head, looking back into the tunnel she'd slid down. Someone else was coming. Lorelai jumped out of the way, watching as Ignis landed where she had been.

He looked around, summoning his daggers upon seeing the daemons. "Lora, you're here as well."

She nodded, keeping her eyes on the surrounding imps. "Looks that way. Let's take care of these pests."

The two skilled fighters easily took down the small, weaker enemies. Once they were taken care of, Lorelai scanned the area. The two were alone in a small but open room. The only exit seemed to be a narrow path.

"Seems we've been separated from the others," Ignis pointed out. "We need to regroup as soon as possible. We're fortunate the both of us fell through the same passage."

"Yeah," Lorelai agreed. "But if imps are all that inhabit this place, then the others will be fine." She smiled brightly. "Hey, at least we've got each other, right? We'll be fine as long as we stick together."

Ignis chuckled at the girl. "Your optimism is a pleasant quality to have given the circumstances. You are correct, let us make haste."

"Alright, that looks like the only way out." She pointed to the narrow path. "Let's go find our teammates."

The two traversed the tunnel, Lorelai's light orb still banishing the surrounding darkness. With the cave walls slowly closing in on them, they could feel the cold coming off the icy walls. Every warm breath that escaped their mouths turned to fog, giving them an indication of just how cold it was. They eventually got to a narrow passage.

"This is going to be miserable," Lorelai muttered, knowing she'd have to touch the ice covered walls. She moved sideways into the tight space. Her back and chest were immediately met with the hard, cold rock. She took in a sharp breath. "By the Stars, that's freezing!" she cried.

She steadily forced herself forward, allowing Ignis to squeeze in behind her. "Tis a rather tight fit, isn't it? A bit uncomfortable, to say the least."

"I'll say." Lorelai's teeth began to chatter from the cold. Once the two made it out, Lorelai rubbed her arms and shivered. "S-So c-cold," she said between the clacking of her teeth.

Seeing how she only wore a crop top with a vest, Ignis removed his jacket and placed it around her shoulders. "Here. You need this more than I do at the moment."

Lorelai's eyes widened slightly in surprise, her body immediately enveloped by the warmth of the thick clothing. "N-No, Ignis, I can't take this. You'll freeze."

"I assure you, I'm fine. You, on the other hand, are turning pale. Your body temperature appears to be much lower than my own."

Lorelai looked down at her arms. He was right, her skin was much paler than it should've been. She smiled and tugged the jacket closer around her, feeling warmer already. "Thanks, Iggy." She used the nickname the others had given him.

They continued onward, following the straightforward paths before them. They suddenly heard several gunshots echoing through the cave. "Prompto," they said in unison.

They both picked up the pace, running toward the noise. Lorelai caught sight of the other three men fighting off a small swarm of imps on a floor below them. Unable to stop herself from slipping, the girl fell on her butt and slid off the edge, landing in the area below. Ignis hopped down after her and took her hand, helping her to her feet. The fight was already over by the time the two made it. The other three looked over at them.

Prompto immediately grinned and rushed toward them. "Lora!" He then paused, his grin fading. He took notice of Ignis's jacket wrapped around the girl. He couldn't help feeling a bit jealous. "W-What's going on?" he asked.

Lorelai followed the blond's gaze to the jacket draped around her shoulders. "Oh, Ignis was kind enough to lend me his jacket earlier. Speaking of which, all that running has helped me warm up." She slid the clothing off and handed it back to Ignis, not wanting him to freeze too.

"Hey, Ignis, glad you could make it," Noctis said with slight sarcasm.

Ignis slipped his jacket on while smiling ever so slightly at the prince. "My apologies. Lora and I came as quickly as we could."

"A-And you're both okay?" Prompto questioned.

Lorelai nodded confidently with a smile. "It was nothing we couldn't handle."

"Now that we're back together I suggest we get moving," Gladio stated. "I think we're almost there."

Just as Gladio said, after crossing a narrow ledge, the group came to a large room where the back wall was made entirely of ice. Waiting for them was a mindflayer that the team easily disposed of. Off to the left was an ornate door resembling the ones on the last couple of tombs.

"This is it," Noctis said. He walked over to the door and unlocked it.

With the group going on inside, Lorelai decided to wait for them outside. She stood quietly with her arms crossed. Her eyes began wandering over the walls. She suddenly realized that there was another small path that led to the right. She glanced back at the tomb door before letting her curiosity get the better of her. She walked down the short tunnel, stopping before a large, vault-like door. She gazed at it, her eyes taking in the number of symbols on it. There was one that her eyes landed on that forced a gasp from her lips.

She stared at the Siderum emblem planted on the stone. Her eyes caught a glimpse of Solheim's crest on the opposite side of the door. She slowly reached her hand out, resting her palm against the cold stone, right over the symbol. Why are these here? What does this mean? Her thoughts were running wild.

"Lora!" She jumped in surprise, hearing the voices of her friends.

She retracted her hand, glancing back down the tunnel. She took one more look at the emblems on the sides of the vault and rushed back to her teammates before they went searching for her. Her mind struggled to find a way of understanding what it all meant. But she did remember someone who may be able to help. It would be tough keeping something like this from her friends, but she knew it'd be easier than explaining it all to them.
