Chapter VII
"Where are we going?" Gladio asked suspiciously.
Lorelai chuckled and glanced back at him, continuing her steady pace. "You guys were searching for royal tombs, right? I sorta lied before when I said I didn't know where to find them. I do know where one is."
"And you didn't tell us this before because...?" Noctis crossed his arms, slight annoyance in his voice.
Lorelai sighed in defeat. "Because I don't travel with others. I do things on my own, that's how it's always been." She honestly just didn't want anyone to find out about her past or her fear. She wouldn't mind having companions if those things didn't matter.
"That must be quite a challenge out here," Ignis stated. "There is safety in numbers, for you to always be alone means it's easier for you to be targeted by monsters."
Lorelai turned around with a small smile, walking backwards as she spoke, "I assure you, it's not a problem. Daemons are afraid of my light magic and I know how to handle most monsters."
"But it can't hurt to travel with friends, right?" Prompto asked with a grin. He hoped the girl would agree.
Lorelai turned back around. "Yeah, I guess so." Her answer made Prompto overjoyed. He had to contain his excitement. "Anyway, how do you plan on getting in the tomb? I've tried before and it's locked."
"Cor gave us a key," Noctis answered simply.
"Speaking of Cor, what is he to you anyway?" Gladio asked, still curious to know her relationship with the Immortal.
Lorelai bit her lower lip in thought, trying to find a way to answer without giving anything away. "Well... he saved my life, and he took care of me and trained me for years. I guess I sorta see him as a father figure." She shrugged her shoulders nonchalantly.
"That is so cool!" Prompto exclaimed. "You're like the adopted daughter of the marshal! People all over Lucis dream of just seeing him in person, but you, you're like family!"
Lorelai laughed. "I guess you could put it that way." She stopped briefly before picking up her pace. "There it is, the royal tomb." She pointed ahead of them and the group hurried into the small clearing.
Noctis walked ahead of her and to the door of the tomb. He slipped the key out of his pocket and stuck it in the lock, turning it and unlocking the door. The group entered the tomb. Lorelai looked all around at the statues, seeing the place on the inside for the first time. She then locked her eyes on the statue of one of the past kings of Lucis lying in the middle of the room. Noctis approached it and held his hand out. The weapon that rested on the statue rose up and shot toward the prince, disappearing into his body.
Lorelai's eyes were wide as she gasped. "So, it is true. You really are the one True King of Lucis. I had only heard rumors about it until now."
"We still need to track down the other tombs so His Highness can gain the full power of his ancestors," Ignis said, adjusting his glasses. "Please, Lora, won't you aid us in this task?" The others looked to the girl, awaiting an answer.
She took a few steps back, holding her hands up defensively. "Sorry, guys, I only knew of this one. I'm not sure where the others are."
"But you do adventure quite a bit, right?" Noctis questioned. Lorelai nodded in response. "Well, you're bound to stumble upon them eventually."
"C'mon, Lora, let us travel with you," Prompto begged, his usual grin on his face. "It'll be fun. A bunch of friends on the road, hunting monsters and venturing to the far corners of Lucis."
Lorelai laughed lightly at him. "You make a convincing argument." She took a moment to think it over, leaving the men in suspense. I guess it could be okay, she thought. It would be fun to have friends to accompany me for a change. Besides, they're not going to find out anything. She smiled kindly at them. "Alright, let's team up."
"Woohoo!" Prompto cheered, hopping up off the ground in glee. "We're gonna have a blast!"
Lorelai rolled her eyes, giggling at the blond's reaction. The group left the tomb. Before they could decide on where to go next, Lorelai's phone rang. She pulled the phone from her back pocket and answered the call.
"Hello?"
"Lora, I've got some bad news."
"Dave? What's wrong? Did something happen?"
"I heard from the tipsters that another hunter took your job and went up to the Rock of Ravatogh. He was killed by that monster at the summit."
A loud gasp escaped Lorelai's lips and her eyes grew wide. "Oh no, not another one." The guys stared at her questioningly.
"I'm heading on over to Verinas Mart. If you want to meet me there, I'll give you the details."
"Yes. I'll be there as quickly as I can." She hung up and slid the phone back into her pocket.
"What was that?" Noctis asked the girl.
She took a deep breath. "There's been an incident on Ravatogh - a hunter was killed. I'm going to meet Dave at Verinas for the details. I understand if you guys don't wanna come with me since it doesn't really concern you."
Ignis placed a hand on her shoulder. "Lora, we just agreed on this. The five of us are now a team. We're all going."
"Besides, we know Dave," Noctis added.
"He's the dude that searches for dog tags," Prompto said. "We've helped him out a few times."
Gladio crossed his arms. "Then let's get going and stop wasting time."
Lorelai nodded in agreement. The group headed back to the Regalia and hopped in, Lorelai seated between Gladio and Noctis once again. She found herself staring down at her lap while the black car sped down the road. The wind whipped her black hair around, although her mind was elsewhere. In the past months, two hunters had lost their lives on Ravatogh, trying to fulfill the girl's request.
Lorelai clenched her fists. "This is all my fault." Aside from Ignis, the guys all looked at her in confusion. "That's the third hunter to die on Ravatogh now."
"How is that your fault?" Noctis asked her.
"Because..." Lorelai let out a sigh of frustration. She knew this was something she couldn't keep from them. "Because I'm the one who issued the request. I sent those hunters to their deaths."
"You did no such thing," Ignis said, defending the girl.
"Yeah, you didn't force them to take the request," Prompto agreed. "They chose to do it all on their own."
"Just what is the request anyway?" Gladio asked her.
"It's to retrieve an item at the peak of Ravatogh, but the zu that lives up there has killed or injured everyone who's attempted it." Lorelai took a deep breath, ready to explain the situation to them. "About half a year ago, I visited the Rock of Ravatogh and was attacked by the zu. I lost something very precious in the nest of that beast, but I was forced to flee." She clenched her fists again. "I... I couldn't kill it. I wasn't strong enough to defeat the zu back then, probably still not. But... I really want back what's mine."
Gladio suddenly nudged the girl, bringing her attention to him. He had a grin on his face. "Don't worry about it, we'll help you out. Shouldn't be a problem for all of us."
Lorelai gazed up at the man, wide eyed. "No, I can't ask you to do that. It's too dangerous."
Prompto laughed and looked back at Lorelai. "Hey, no worries, we can handle it. Besides, you helped us out, now it's our turn to help you."
Lorelai looked at each of them in surprise. They really offered to do this for her. Those four were going to put themselves in danger for her. She couldn't believe how kind they were. Once the shock wore off, she smiled gratefully.
"Thank you, all of you."
She could even see Ignis flash her a smile in the rearview mirror. "Think nothing of it. You're our friend, after all."
The four men did their best to joke around and cheer up the girl. It worked well. Lorelai was feeling more relaxed and confident in their abilities. She pondered whether they'd succeed in the request, or be forced to flee as she had done half a year ago. But after seeing the strength of those four in battle, she had hope that this time, she would succeed and take back what was precious to her.
