Chapter Three

Killer (Kaname): Age 12

Lyla: Age 10

"Lyla, take attendance." The marine instructor ordered as he sat at his desk looking as if he'd rather be anywhere but in the classroom with the adolescents.

Lyla jumped to her feet and scanned the room smiling softly as she spotted Kaname sitting at his desk looking bored out of his mind. "Everyone is present, sir." She bowed before taking her seat.

"Really?" The marine asked in awe before looking to the usually vacant seat where the delinquent was supposed to sit only to find said unruly golden maned delinquent sitting in his seat. "Nicely done, Lyla." He commended her. He had no idea how she had managed it, countless teachers, teacher's aids and even a handful of officers that occasionally volunteered their time had tried, to no avail, to get the delinquent to go to classes.

Like many other children at the Academy, Lyla was an orphan. All the orphans in the system were screened and if they passed the screening were given the option to stay at the Marine Academy or go to an orphanage, most picked the Academy to get an education and learn useful life skills. Though there were a few exceptions of students who were forced to attend the academy so the government could keep a watchful eye on them, like the delinquent.

After the morning classes while everyone prepared for lunch, Lyla noticed the blonde boy with the untamable mane of golden hair slipping out of the classroom. She got to her feet and smoothed out her uniform before picking up her small pad of pen and paper with her detention slips and followed after him. He made his way toward the utility staircase that was off limits to students and Lyla raced after him. Her short hurried steps were no match for his long strides.

He disappeared up the utility stairs and Lyla grumbled under her breath as she hurriedly raced after him. Light flashed in the dark staircase as he reached the rooftop and opened the door. Lyla jumped as the door slammed shut encasing her in darkness once more. She scrambled up the remaining flights of stairs and struggled to open the heavy door.

"Students aren't allowed on the roof!" She tapped her foot impatiently as she stepped out of the stairwell, only to pause as she didn't see him anywhere. "Kaname?!"

"Up here, genius." Kaname chuckled as he watched the cute Class Monitor begin to panic.

Lyla turned and blanched as she spotted him sitting atop the water tower. "Why do you always have to go to high places?"

"Because usually people don't want to waste the time to come up after me, but you're a stubborn one." He smiled, "Come on up, class monitor, it's a nice view." He patted the thin metal platform beside where he was sitting.

"No, thank you." She folded her arms across her chest.

"What's that? I can't hear you?" He called down to her.

"I said, no, thank you!" Lyla yelled up at him.

"I can't hear you all the way down there!" He yelled down at her and held back a laugh as she stubbornly climbed the small metal ladder as she became flustered with him.

"You've earned yourself another detention." Lyla huffed as she reached the top and extended a bright blue detention slip toward him.

He chuckled and caught her wrist in his hand and pulled her down to sit beside him and couldn't help but laugh aloud as she screamed at the sudden motion. "Relax. I won't let you fall."

"Why must you break rules millions of feet off the ground?" Lyla grumbled as she clung to the railing with her arms.

"We're not millions of feet off the ground, genius." He placed a hand over her mouth as she opened her mouth ready to fire a snappy comeback, "Just be quiet, and enjoy the view."

Lyla bristled with rage for a moment before rolling her eyes at him and looking out over the school grounds. Her breath hitched in her throat, the water tower overlooked the courtyard and garden and the forest just beyond the academy's property. She looked at the beautiful array of flowers in the garden below in awe, "I didn't know the school had a garden." She said absently.

The young blonde with the mane of unruly hair shook his head as he laughed silently at the girl, "You know, if you're not careful and keep running after me, people are going to start thinking you like the delinquent."

"I don't think you're a delinquent." Lyla shrugged and stared dreamily down at the lush garden.

With a shrug, he turned his gaze away from her and leaned back to look up at the clouds overhead. A gentle warm breeze drifted lazily past them ruffling their fair hair. It carried the soft floral scent of lilac and roses from the garden below. Though he wouldn't admit it for quite some time, he did enjoy the bossy girl's company. She didn't label him or expect the worst out of him like everyone else at the Academy.

"Kaname?" Her soft voice jolted him from his relaxed daze.

"You know, you're quite rude, class monitor." He chuckled as he caught sight of her flabbergasted expression.

"What?!"

"I am your senpai."

Her cheeks flushed with color, "Kaname-senpai?" She amended.

"Yes?"

"Can you tell me how to get to the garden?" She asked cutely.

He got to his feet with a sigh and disentangled her from the railing and pulled her toward the small metal ladder.

"Hey! Why do you get to go first?" She stammered as her cheeks flushed with heat.

"Because you're a klutz and I can catch you if you fall." Kaname noted with a smile.

"You'll look up my skirt!"

"That's a chance you're going to have to take if you want a safety net." He shrugged and began descending the ladder.

Red faced, Lyla hurriedly scrambled down the ladder. "If you saw anything, you're going to have detention for a month." She stammered adorably as she reached the bottom of the ladder and hopped down beside him.

He shook his head and held back a laugh as he headed toward the stairwell leaving her bristling behind him.

Lyla trailed after him in silence as he led her down the utility stairs to the ground floor. She was new to the academy and was having a hard time making friends. The other students in the class pretended like she didn't exist and on her first day had even taken the joke so far that when she'd answered a question on the chalkboard someone had run up and erased it and told the teacher he'd forgotten to assign the problem to someone so he called on someone else. She didn't know why the other students were being cruel to her and she was grateful her teacher had sent her after the 'delinquent' as he was the first person who treated her like she existed.

"What are you spacing out for?" His smooth voice broke her from her dark thoughts.

"Sorry." Lyla smiled sheepishly before gaping at the sight before her. They were in the garden! There were blossoms of all different kinds: tulips, daffodils, daisies, carnations, petunias, lilies, chrysanthemums, orchids, roses and so much more. It was a floral paradise. "Wow!" She breathed with a dreamy sigh as she hurried to explore the different flowers. "Thanks, Senpai!" Lyla grinned with tears brimming in her eyes.

He pretended he didn't see as she furiously wiped at her eyes with a navy handkerchief she had tucked in her breast pocket. Something had upset her at some point on their journey from the roof to the garden. The sound of a shrill trilling laugh echoed from the other side of the garden and he noticed three girls from their class walking through the courtyard heading in the direction of their classroom.

Their eyes met his as they circled the path in front of them and completely looked through the petite blonde at his side. "That delinquent is so weird." The lead girl, a pretty brunette with bright green eyes, snickered loud enough for the pair in the garden to hear. "Sitting in the garden by himself, how bizarre."

Realizing what they were doing, he rolled his pale blue eyes and turned to the petite girl to tell her to ignore them but felt his heart stutter in his chest as he saw a single tear slip from her hold. It had been awhile since he'd attended classes but he had noticed that not a single person had acknowledged the petite blonde. It was petty and cruel for them to single her out and bully her.

He ruffled her shimmering blonde hair, "Find the prettiest flower in the garden."

"Okay." Lyla sniffled softly as she tried to hide the tears welling in her eyes and trudged off through the garden. After a few minutes, he heard her soft voice, "This one."

He followed her on the path and spotted her standing in front of a rose bush pointing to a unique blossom. It was a vibrant purple color with faint tinges of fuchsia and the only one on the rose bush in full bloom. Kaname plucked it from the bush and tucked it into her navy bandana in her hair. A faint blush splashed across the petite girl's cheeks.

"You realize, I have to give you a detention for that, right?" She bit her lip.

Kaname chuckled, "No good deed goes unpunished."

"You vandalized school property." She chided him half-heartedly.

"So, I did." He shrugged and took the bright blue detention slip she extended toward him.

"Thank you, senpai." She said softly as she trailed after him as the warning bell rang signaling the students to return to class.
