Chapter 5
"Cole? You in there?" Kai's voice rang out through the ghost's room, but Cole wouldn't let him enter. He groaned when the Fire Ninja went for a different approach.
'I know you're in there. I can sense you. Do you forget we're connected?'
'Of course not. I was hoping you'd go away.'
'That's not very nice.' Kai withdrew, and spoke allowed again. "Will you let me in?"
"No."
"Come on, Cole! I want to help you! You can't keep locking yourself in your room!" The Earth Ninja sighed, and, without really thinking about it, unlocked the door. Kai came charging through. Cole locked the door again after it swung shut.
"Cole, what happened out there? You just snapped." The Fire Ninja knelt down next to him. The Black Ninja opened his mouth to reply, but ended up gritting his teeth as another spike of pain went through him. The water had damaged him more than he let on.
'Why didn't you say something? It's only been ten minutes! We can help you!' Kai's voice echoed in his head, and Cole saw him wince as he felt the effects through the connection.
'I didn't want to bother you. You guys have enough problems. I'm the broken link in our team at the moment.'
"Why do you keep saying that? We care for you! We'll help you get used to your new form, and–"
"I don't want to get used to it, Kai!" Cole snapped, glaring at the Red Ninja. "I want my body back! I hate this!"
"You were certainly enjoying it earlier."
"Yeah, and looked what happened! It isn't right! The only thing that can hurt me is water, the same thing that gives mortals life! I'm just so...different, now! I hate it!"
Cole broke down once more, no longer caring if he was seen or not. He could feel the turmoil coursing through Kai. Or was that his own feelings, raging through the Fire Ninja's mind? He didn't know anymore. His whole world had been flipped upside down.
Suddenly, Kai began laughing beside him. The Earth Ninja looked up, offended, strange tears drying on his cheeks. "What's so funny?"
"Sorry," he said through his laughter, "It's just that, I can't even imagine how strange our conversation must've sounded. We kept switching between out loud and mental. It must've been so weird!"
The Fire Ninja dissolved into giggles again. Soon Cole was joining him, the laughter contagious. After a while, both were rolling around on the floor, laughing so hard both of them were crying. They managed to miraculously pull themselves together when Nya called out on the other side of the door.
"You boys in there? Come on, it's time to practice Air Jitzu. You guys need to master that before we can even begin to go after the second clue on the staff!"
The two Ninja grinned at each other. 'I don't need to practice,' Cole said. 'I just discovered I can fly on my own!'
'Then you'll get some entertainment by watching us fall on our butts over and over.' Cole burst out laughing again, much to the confusion of Nya.
"What's so funny? Come on, Zane and Jay are already out there!"
"We're coming Nya, don't worry," The Earth Ninja passed through the door while Kai manually had to unlock and open it.
The three of them raced out on deck, to see the ocean glittering on all sides of them. Just then, a whiny, loud, blue blur fell from the sky.
"Ow," Jay complained, lying on his back. "Argh, this is impossible! People can't fly!"
"You have to clear your mind, Jay," Cole shouted as loud as he could. "It's easy!"
"Oh yeah! If it's so easy, you do it!"
He smirked, and, using his most recently found power, floated into the air and landed on the mast, where everyone else was trying to reach. The look on the Blue Ninja's face made him double over laughing.
"My turn!" Kai jumped and began to spin, the strange aura of Air Jitzu surrounding him. Cole moved over, now completely floating in mid-air, as the Fire Ninja landed on the mast beside him.
"Oh man, Jay!" he said, laughing as well, "You're face! Why don't you come on up and join us!"
The Lightning Ninja, stood, muttering under his breath. He jumped, spinning, but half-way up the aura faded, and he fell back to the deck. Kai and Cole could hear the impact from way up above, causing both to wince.
"Alright, Zane, it's your turn," Nya called. The Nindroid stood up from his corner on the deck, and, after a brief moment, jumped, and icy aura surrounding him, and he landed on one of the post sticking out from just below the top of the mast. All three could hear Jay's swearing.
"Try again! Come on, you can do it!" The Blue Ninja ignored Cole's voice, sitting down on the deck and crossing his arms. Nya walked over to him and said something, the three other Ninja too far up to hear. Jay sighed, and stood up again. Cole was tempted to sabotage his next attempt as jealousy rippled through him.
'Hey, calm down. Jay needs to get the hang of this if we're gonna stop Morro.' Kai's voice relaxed him, and he backed up a bit, just so the urge wouldn't take over him again.
Jay jumped into the air once more, the blue aura forming. Cole was expecting it to fail again half-way, but Jay kept going. When he was almost to the top, the aura faded again. As he began to fall back to the deck, in a split-second decision, Cole caught the Lightning with his telekinetic powers, setting him down on the other side of the mast, opposite of Zane. When the three of them stared at him, the ghost just shrugged. "He was mostly here, anyway. It's no big deal."
'Uh, yeah. That was a big deal. I thought you hated him.'
"Shut up, Kai," he muttered. Zane looked at him, confusion written on his face.
"But Kai did not say anything. Why would you tell him to 'shut up'?"
Before he could reply, Jay interrupted. "Hey, it was you who made me do all that crazy stuff at dinner! You were using your new mind power thing!"
'Oh, you just got busted, Cole!'
'Not helping, Kai!'
Cole just floated in place, Jay staring at him, his face turning red again. I wish I could just disappear. I never thought Jay would be smart enough to put two and two together. Suddenly, Jay gasped, and nearly fell off the pole. Kai's jaw was on the ground, and Zane was staring at him still, the confusion even more prominent.
"What," he said, confused himself. "What I do?"
"Cole..." Jay said, blinking several times. "You're...you're...where are you?"
"What do you mean, 'where am I'? I'm right in front of you!" For emphasis, he waved a hand in front of the dumbstruck Ninja. He didn't react.
'Look down at yourself.'
'What are you guys–' He obeyed Kai and glanced at his body. What he saw shocked him enough he couldn't even finish his mental reply. More importantly, it was what he didn't see. His body was gone.
"Oh, this is so cool!" He flew in circles around the other Ninja, their eyes trying to follow his voice. "I'm invisible!" As soon as he said it, though, his concentration faded and his body flickered back into view. That did nothing to damper his mood. He was going to prank all the guys so hard with this new power!
"You can have fun with your new invisibility later," Nya called up. "The sun is setting. Time for bed."
"Jeez, Nya," Kai called down to his sister, "You sound like our mother."
"Well, someone's gotta make sure you guys don't hurt yourselves. Anyway, since everyone seems to have the hang of Air Jitzu, we can go after the second clue tomorrow."
The four Ninja jumped down on to the deck. Jay immediately gravitated towards Nya, and Cole had to show some serious restraint to not pummel the Blue Ninja where he stood.
'Hey calm down.' Kai's voice entered his head. 'You discovered a new ghost power! That's awesome!'
'Yeah, it is.' His mood darkened. 'But I'm afraid to sleep. What if I dream of Lloyd again? I don't want to see that again.'
'But if you do, we might get for information on Morro's plans. Speaking of which, tomorrow, we've got our own special training. Remember why we formed this bond.'
