Essay Assignment (Members)
Small Note: Hello members! This is one of your bi-monthly assignments for everyone who is part of the society. If there are any problems please contact me, but please complete if possible.
As part of the new book discussions I am introducing, I thought it would be a good idea to introduce one that every one could do because it is not as time consuming, though certainly as interesting.
We will be studying Martin Luther King. Your assignment is to write a piece about his life, speeches, impact and the context of the period he lived in. Included in this chapter I have placed a link for his most famous speech for you to read (and write about): 'I Have a Dream', but I would also like you to gather more unique points to practice an enhanced, alluring writing style. You can write an opinionated or factual essay/article and can also reflect upon present day dilemmas.
Extra task: write a similarly styled speech based on present day issues you wish to change.
Below are some basic points about Martin Luther King's life in case you are new to this figure or need some help, however I am leaving the rest to you.
• He was a pioneer for racial equality.
• He considered himself a pacifist and was highly involved in human rights affairs. This linked to his specifically non-violent protests.
• He grew up to be a religious man, having been brought up in a religious environment.
• Books published:
The Measure of Man
A Time to Break Silence
The Trumpet of Conscience
Stride Toward Freedom
A Testament of Hope
Why We Can't Wait
Where Do We Go From Here
• Key quotes:
'We must learn to live together as brothers or die together as fools.'
'I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the colour of their skin, but by the content of their character.'
'Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.'
'Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about the things that matter.'
'In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.'
