Chapter 6

NATHAN

After saying goodbye to the cadets that were left behind, Commander Erwin led us outside the walls to begin our very first expedition. It was exciting, but at the same time, it was very intimidating.

"Now remember, Cadet Rogers," Meghan told me, "we're at the front of the formation, which means you'll be seeing lots of titans. So remember, no mater the what the situation is, always stay prepared and try not to wet yourself."

"Got it. You too, Meghan," I replied.

Meghans cheeks turned red from being so suprised at my reply, but it had disappeared as fast as it had appeared. Suddenly, a titan appeared out of the blue and chased Henri. Before Henri could turn around and kill it himself, I sprang off my horse and sliced the titans 10-meter high titans neck.

"Thanks, Nathan," Henri panted. I grinned and responded, "Anytime, mate."

Henri cracked a smile and kept an eye out for more titans. When we spotted the same titan, we exchanged looks and shouted, "THIS ONE'S MINE!!"

Henri beat me to the titan's neck and sliced it open before I had a shot at it. "Sorry, Rogers! You lose!" Henri teased, sticking his tongue out at me.

"HEY!" Wisteria snapped. "Knock it off, boys!!"

"Why? What do you have against killing titans? I thought that was our main job!" I haughtily said to Wisteria.

"Nothing, it's just that you're treating this expedition like it's just a silly little game. In other words, you're not taking this expedition seriously. Keep in mind that the fate of all humanity, as wells your futures, are at stake," Wisteria replied.

Wisteria tossed her long, bleach blonde hair behind her shoulders and fired a streak of red smoke into the clear blue sky with her gun before leaving me in the dust.

In the background, Jared was breathing hard and shaking as he climbed back onto his horse. Tiffany was sitting on her horse, which was right next to his flashing a kind of smile at him. "I can't believe you saved me," Jared stammered.

Tiffany laughed, "Well, why wouldn't I save you?"

I was a little shocked by this, I had always believed Tiffany and Jared hated each other. Then again I never thought to ask myself if they'd risk their lives for each other. Considering their on the same team I should've known they would always have each others backs.

I didn't see any titans for a while, so I smiled and relaxed. "Huh. Maybe this mission won't be as hard as these missions normally are," I thought.

Just as I thought the mission would come to an end, A stream of black smoke appeared in the sky. I knew it could only mean one thing. There was an abnormal out here.

"NATHAN! BEHIND YOU!!" Henri yelled.

I turned my head and spotted the abnormal running after me. It was taller than any titan I had seen today, standing twenty meters high, with messy  black hair that almost completely covered his indigo eyes, and defined muscles. It was much faster than the other titans too.

"It's going to take a lot to take this one down," I thought, "but it's worth a shot."

Using my 3DMG gear, I soared up to the titans shoulders and prepared to kill it, but the titan saw me. Then, almost exactly after we made eye contact the titan tugged my gear and swiftly threw me off its shoulders.

"What the...this thing's intelligent?!"  I gasped in horror.

Then I groaned and sat up on the grass, hopping that the titan wouldn't try killing me again. It was something I knew I shouldn't have been wishing for, because every I've encountered weren't like that... Or so I thought.

The titan kneeled down and picked me up by my hood. He dangled me in his face and carefully inspected me before settling me down and running away. Meghan just stared at it with a bewildered expression on her face.

"He just spared me," I thought, dropping my jaw. "Why did he spare me?"

"NATHAN!"

I jerked my head to the right and saw Devon riding on his horse in my direction. "Why are you sitting on your butt and doing nothing? We have titans to kill!" He shouted at me.

That was when I hopped back on my horse and rode with Devon into the forest. Then, Devon looked up at the abnormal and asked me, "Has anyone tried to kill that thing yet?"

"Yeah," I nervously chuckled. "I did, but it took me down, and for some reason, it decided to spare me."

"Huh. Well, Gina said that she saw it kill other titans, so for now, don't go after it again. We could use it later on," Devon said.

Suddenly, I could hear Meghan, Mia, and Michaela screaming at the abnormal from about three hundred feet away. "What do you suppose that's about?" I asked Devon.

"Not sure. I'm gonna go check it out," I said, riding over to where the abnormal and the three girls were.

"I'm coming with you," Devon said, riding behind me.

We found Meghan kneeling down next to Mia and wrapping her arm in a bandage, while Michaela was growling at the titan. "What makes you think you can do that to my friend and get away with it?!" She hissed.

"What's going on?" I asked Michaela. "I thought that this abnormal didn't kill humans!"

"That's what we all thought at first," Michaela panted, "but now he's going crazy, and he almost killed Mia because of this!"

"We have to kill it," I said under my breath.

"No," Michaela said. "We have to find out who's inside that titan, and when we do, he's going to have to explain himself to all of us."

"What?"

"That's the Shadow Titan right there, Nathan," Michaela explained, pointing at the titan that had spared me earlier. "He's not an abnormal, but rather a titan-shifter."

Suddenly, the Shadow Titan reached out to snatch up Michaela, but she moved away from his hands and used her 3DMG gear to soar up into a tree. Then, just as Michaela jumped out of the tree and prepared to slash her blades through the Shadow Titan's neck, he ducked and vaporized. After that, nobody could see him.

"Crap," Michaela said to herself, "we lost him."

"Lost who?" Wisteria called out to Michaela.

"Oh," Michaela answered, "it's no one important."

"Mmm. Sure. Anyways, we're heading to our campsite now, so unless you want the Shadow Titan to devour you in your sleep, follow us," Wisteria instructed.

Michaela's jaw hung open. "W-W-What? How did you-"

"I knew you had encountered him from the moment I found you here," Wisteria coolly replied. "Being twenty meters high, he's not hard to spot."

When we got to out camping site, the sky was pitch black. I wondered why we were sleeping out in the open where any nearby titan could kill us, but the others assured me that we would be okay. I trusted them, so I didn't worry too much.

We woke up really early the next morning, and though it was still dark outside, Wisteria insisted that we picked up where we had left off at that time. But we had one more obstacle to take care of before we could continue our mission.

Alexandrea was standing in the middle of the road.
