Chapter 1

MICHAELA

"So what's the plan, Captain Rogue?" I asked the captain of the Dreamscaper Society, Stella Rogue.

"I thought that it would be easy to just take the Dark Sword from the elves and run with it! I wasn't expecting an army of evil elves to chase after us, so to answer your question, Michaela, I don't have a plan!" Stella panted.

"You always have a plan, Captain Rogue!" Jared Trigger, another member of the Society, frantically shouted.

"Well, this time I don't!" Stella yelled.

The Society had been seeking the Dark Sword awhile now, as it contained evil magic drained from our mortal enemy, the Malstratus Formation. Today, Stella had decided that we were going to take it from the village of evil elves- an unruly village hidden in a deeper part of the forest than I'd ever imagined. This wasn't Stella's most brilliant idea, and now, here I am, frantically running away from a group of elves who had enough dark magic in them to torture me.

"What are we going to do?!" The youngest member of the Society, Phoebe Wells, shrieked.

"We'll just have to wing it," Nathan Rogers, my stunning boyfriend and the possible future leader of the Society, nervously replied.

"THEY'RE GAINING ON US, CAPTAIN ROGUE!" Tiffany Hassibor informed Stella, her white-blonde fishtail braid swinging behind her as she ran.

"We're doomed..." Phoebe's older brother, Tristan, said to himself under his breath.

"Don't give up now!" Devon Brody urged Tristan furiously.

"Couldn't we just teleport back to the Society?" Stephanie Trigger, Jared's daughter and my best friend, calmly suggested.

"The elves can teleport, too. They have enough magic in them to follow us around the entire world." Nathan replied.

"We could just drain their magic from them," Phoebe interjected.

"As much as I hate to say it, Phoebe, magic doesn't work like that." Nathan corrected Phoebe.

"Well, you better think of something quickly, because there's an elf on the back of my neck!" Tiffany screeched. Sure enough, there was a small elf dressed in dark armor hanging onto the back of Tiffany's neck. The elf was about to bite her, and I knew I had to act fast, for I'd learned that evil elf bites were poisonous to humans- especially for Mindscapers like her.

I sprinted over to Tiffany and punched the elf until it let go of Tiffany's neck. The elf crashed into a pine tree and hit the ground so hard that even a fool could tell it was dead.

"T-thanks, Michaela," Tiffany croaked in surprise.

"Don't mention it," I said with a smile.

"Michaela, you just gave me an idea," Nathan said, "these elves can't hurt us if they're dead."

"You're right, Nathan," I growled, "we're going to have to kill them. All of them."

"I'll take care of this," somebody offered as they snatched the Dark Sword from me. I turned to my right side and saw my father, Lucas Powers, running while holding the Dark Sword in his hand.

"Dad, what are you doing?" I asked him.

"You're part Lightscaper, Michaela. If you try to use this sword, it'll only backfire on you!" Dad answered me.

"But I'm a Darknesscaper, too, Dad!" I reminded him.

"I'm just trying to save you from a lot of pain!" Dad retorted. The next thing I knew, I was staring right into his ocean blue eyes while running from the army of elves. His expression told me that he knew what he was doing, but the only thing that could be seen in my bright hazel eyes was fear.

"Never mind," I muttered, "you seem to know what you're doing, anyways."

Dad smiled at me before turning around and sprinting towards the elves. The kindness in his eyes was suddenly replaced with a threatening, merciless glare, and his grip on the Dark Sword became twice as firm.

"So you want the Dark Sword, eh?" Dad bellowed angrily. "WELL, COME AND GET IT!!"

The elves charged at my father, but without a chance to react, he raised the Dark Sword and slashed it through the elves, one by one, until they were all gone. I stopped running, loudly exhaled with relief, and fell to my knees as I glanced at the fallen elves.

"Well," Devon stated, "that got really violent in under a minute."

"No kidding," Tiffany added.

"Well done, everybody. That could've been a complete disaster." Stella said.

"Now let's get going, ladies and gentlemen. We don't want the Malstratus Formation to find out that we were here." Nathan said.

"Agreed," everybody else answered at the same time.

Once we were all back at the Society, I followed Stella to the lab, where she would attempt to extract the magic from the Dark Sword. The other members of the Society, including my father, were waiting for Stella and I in the lab as well. Dad was still holding the Dark Sword in his hand when Stella and I arrived in the lab.

"This sword has always been special to my father," Stella explained, "when my mother was killed, this was the weapon she lost her life ro. Her blood caused this sword to absorb all of the dark magic inside of her...and as you can see, it is no ordinary sword anymore."

Dad handed Stella the Dark Sword, which she then placed down on the closest table to her while taking a deep breath. "This sword was used to kill many powerful Scapers before the Trinityscapers were born. But today, the Malstratus Formation planned to absorb the magic from Michaela and Lucas using this weapon. I predicted their first attack, and after I realized that it would be tonight, I knew we had to retrieve it from the elves as soon as possible." Stella continued on.

"So the Malstratus Formation was planning to kill Michaela and I in our sleep tonight?" Dad asked.

"Sadly, that is correct, Lucas." Stella sighed.

"Today just keeps getting darker and darker," Devon blurted out.

"However, if I can extract a bit of magic from the Dark Sword and inject it into Michaela and Lucas, it won't be able to harm them, even if the Malstratus Formation got ahold of it somehow. The final step is to destroy the Dark Sword, but for now, we have to take a sample of the magic out of the sword before the Malstratus Formation realized that we have taken it from them." Stella said.

"In that case, we should get to work." I suggested.

We spent the next few hours trying to develop the serum that would make my father and I immune to any attacks that involved the Dark Sword. Once the serum was developed, my father and I injected the serum into the back of our necks, and when that happened, I shoved everybody out of my way and walked over to the supply closet.

"What are you doing?" Nathan asked me, but I didn't reply.

I opened up the supply closet and found a tape measurer with an hourglass symbol printed on it. I didn't lnow why, but for some reason, I pulled it out of the supply closet and examined it closely. It didn't look like an ordinary tape measurer once I'd gotten a closer look at it, but it was still interesting to look at.

"How did Stella get ahold of one of those?" Jared asked under his breath.

"Why didn't Stella tell us that she had one of those?" Nathan asked himself in disbelief.

"I think I've seen one of those things before," Devon said as he took the tape measurer, "but I've never seen one that could stretch this long."

Devon stretched out the tape measurer, and just as he was about to let go of it, Stella and Tiffany jumped on top of him and tried to take the tape measurer from him.

"Do you have any idea what you just did, Devon?!" Stella barked as she and Tiffany wrestled Devon.

"Get off of him, Tiffany!" Jared shouted while running over to Tiffany. Jared tried to pull Tiffany away from Devon and Stella, but she resisted him.

"Stop fighting!" I shrieked as I rushed over to Tiffany, Jared, Stella, and Devon, hoping that I could stop them from hurting each other. But before I could even attempt to end the chaos, Nathan and my dad both screamed, "NO!!" The two boys ran over to me and caused me to fall face-first in the tile floor.

"WHAT WAS THAT FOR?!" I bellowed furiously.

"Nathan! Lucas! What do you think you're doing?" Stephanie called out. Stephanie chased my boyfriend and my father until they were all fighting each other on the floor.

"Stephanie!" Phoebe cried as she took off in an attempt to help Stephanie. Tristan followed Phoebe to the crowd of Scapers on the floor. There was an expression on his face that told everybody how worried he was, but I couldn't glance at him for long, because Nathan was blocking my view when he pinned me to the floor.

"We have to get you away from there!" Dad shrieked.

"Why?!" I snapped.

"That's not an ordinary tape measurer, Michaela! That's a time machine! And now, thanks to Devon, everybody in this room is about to travel over 1,000 years back in time!" Nathan answered for my father.

There was no way that anyone in the lab would be able to escape now. Everybody let out a loud, glass-shattering scream, and just like that, everything that surrounded me suddenly vanished.
