Thirty
Alyarra had not felt this anxious or stressed in a long time. Not this type of anxiety anyway. She sat in the courtyard's balcony, keeping an eye on her training husband.
Alyarra decided to spend the entire day trailing and following after him like a shadow as his extended family was getting to King's Landing on that very day. She knew that she really needed to be there for him whenever he was faced with the people that he had not seen in years.
Aemond didn't really mind that Alyarra was following him around though. He thought his wife was sweet, and he always enjoyed her presence. He would have her follow him every day if he could.
Alyarra watched as Aemond sparred with some members of the Kingsguard and then ultimately with Ser Criston Cole. As always, Catherryn sat next to her and the pair were engaged in mindless conversation when Alyarra suddenly noticed two brown haired boys by the weapon's table. She had never seen those boys before around the castle.
"Catherryn... have you seen those two boys around court before?" Alyarra asked as Catherryn stretched her neck, trying to get a look at the boys Alyarra was motioning.
"I have never... oh... do you reckon those are the two Verlaryon boys?" Catherryn asked as Alyarra nodded her head slowly. "It would make sense..."
Alyarra didn't take her eyes off the two boys and she watched as they joined the crowd that was watching Aemond duel with Ser Criston. A sense of doom creeped into her body as she watched the boys. She only hoped Aemond didn't stab them with his sword.
"Come on." Alyarra whispered and stood from her seat. She walked down the stairs of the balcony and into the courtyard.
Alyarra watched as Aemond brought his sword to Criston's neck, the crowd around them clapping. Alyarra clapped slowly, her eyes not leaving the two brown haired boys. "Well done, my prince. You'll be winning tourneys in no time." Criston complimented.
"I don't give a shit about tourneys... Nephews, have you come to train?" Alyarra's breath hitched in her throat whenever Aemond acknowledged his nephews. Aemond seemed rather serious as he stared at the two boys.
Alyarra looked to the boys, who seemed shocked at their uncle. Suddenly everyone's attention turned to the gates of the yard as knights strutted in, escorting a dark skinned man with silver hair. "Vaemond Velaryon." Catherryn whispered into Alyarra's ear as she eyed the man who passed them by and went into the castle. He looked rather smug as he walked past the two princelings.
Alyarra turned to her husband who was smirking at the little spectacle and decided to greet the Velaryon boys. If Aemond wouldn'tbe civil and kind, she would. "Hello, my name is Alyarra Stark. You must be... Prince Jacaerys?" Alyarra asked as she approached the oldest looking boy.
The boy gave her a wide kind smile and nodded his head, "Prince Jacaerys Velaryon, at your service, my fair lady." Jacaerys answered in the most charming of tones.
"This is my younger brother, Prince Lucerys Velaryon." The older Velaryon turned to introduce his younger sibling. Alyarra gave the boy a kind smile and a curtly nod. "I am most happy to make your acquainta-" She was cut off rudely by her husband.
"Alyarra, come here now." Aemond ordered, making her snap her head towards where he stood. He was glaring daggers at his wife, and this only made her gulp. Was he serious? "As I was saying... I am happy to make your acquaintance. I do hope your stay in the Red Keep is a swell one. I kno-" Her words were cut short.
Aemond grabbed her arm forcefully and basically dragged her away from the boys and inside the castle. Alyarra yanked her arm from his grip and looked up at her husband angrily. "What is the matter with you?" Alyarra hissed at her husband, looking around to make sure they weren't causing a scene. Well a bigger one than what Aemond had already caused.
"What is the matter with you!? You took no time to try and fraternize with those little bastard nephews of mine. And then you blatantly dispbeyed me." Aemond hissed back at her, towering over her and imposing their clear height difference.
"And?! I was being kind. What am I supposed to do? Treat them like garbage just because you don't like them? They are princes and they deserve respect, just like you. And disobey? I am not your dog that you can bark orders at." Alyarra answered and this only made Aemond rage.
"Gods, you and barking! I was not barking. I just would expect you to ignore them. You speak as if this is a little family squabble. Alyarra, that boy took my eye. I have already told you the terrors those boys put me through. And yet you still find it adequate to treat them kindly." Aemond shot back and Alyarra took a deep breath and lowered her head.
She needed to understand him. She was his wife, and it was her duty to stand by him.
"And... to make matters worse you know that my half sister sent a raven to ask for you to marry Jacaerys. So yes, I will expect you to treat them like garbage." Aemond ordered more than sternly.
Alyarra pressed her lips together but would ultimately agree, she had a duty to Aemond. Even if she wanted him to make good with his family, she had to listen to his wishes.
"I will not treat them badly but I will not seek to entertain them. And also you didn't have to cause a scene in the courtyard. You basically dragged me away from them. It was embarrassing and a bad look for us." Alyarra told him, her tone remaining stern.
"Oh please, you're lucky I didn't throttle them right there for even daring to look at you." Aemond said in a cruel manner, and Alyarra knew that he was more than capable.
"Yeah yeah, come on. Let's take Baelon to see your sister, she invited us for tea." Alyarra told him and pushed him slowly in a playful manner, making him roll his eyes and chuckle. She could always lighten his mood rather easily.
-
"Helaena! Thank you so much! I love these!" Alyarra squealed as Helaena handed her the new pair of socks she had made for baby Baelon. They were the tiniest and cutest things.
"I am glad. I was scared you would not like them." Helaena said in the soft tone that characterized her. Alyarra gave her a warm smile and embraced her sister in law in a hug. A hug that Helaena did not refuse.
"I love them so much. I bet Baelon will be joyful to wear them." Alyarra jested, making Helaena chuckle slightly.
"Thank you sister, you are most thoughtful." Aemond told his sister with a small smile. He was ecstatic that his wife and his dear sister got alongs so well. Both of them were incredibly important to him.
There was suddenly a small knock on the door to Helaena's chambers, and in came Ser Criston Cole. "Prince Aemond, your grandsire is requesting your presence in his office." The knight informed as Aemond nodded his head once.
The prince stood from his seat and planted a kiss on Alyarra's forehead and then on his son's. "See you for supper, darling." He muttered and headed out of Helaena's parlor with Criston.
"The dragon will suck the wolf dry from it's blood." Helaena hissed to herself, making Alyarra frown at her words. Helaena always had something random to say.
But as always, Alyarra brushed the words off. That is what Aemond told her to do anyways.
Time passed by rapidly as Helaena amd Alyarra spent time together and soon Baelon's wetnurse came to grab him for his feeding. Then after some more time Alyarra decided to head back to her quarters to wait for Aemond to be done with his grandsire so they could have their dinner.
She walked hurriedly towards her quarters with her protector, Benjamin, trailing behind her as he always did after what had happened with Aegon. Since that night, Benjamin had become a quiet shadow behind her.
Even if she didn't want him there half of the time, Aemond did not let the guard leave her side.
Alyarra was busy with her own thoughts as suddenly she was called out by a voice she did not recognize.
"Lady Alyarra Stark, is it?" Alyarra turned to see a very pretty woman staring at her. She instantly knew she was facing Rhaenyra Targaryen, she could tell by her long silver blonde hair. She was accompanied by a man that sort of resembled Aemond, and she knew that it was Daemon Targaryen. Alyarra could feel some nerves seep into her skin slowly.
"It is... it is a pleasure to meet you, Princess Rhaenyra." The girl curtsied at the princess, who gave her a small modest smile.
"I knew it must be you. The scrolls always talk of the beauty of the sister of Lord Cregan Stark." Rhaenyra stated, making Alyarra smile at the compliment. She was not ugly, mean, or cruel like Aemond described.
"That is kind of you to say, princess." Alyarra answered, her gaze shifting every so often to Daemon Targaryen. He was staring intensely at the girl, his eyes scanning each feature on her face. He almost had a disdainful look on his face.
"Hmm. Alyarra Stark..." He spoke, his voice dripping with a tone that Alyarra could not quite make out. Alyarra gazed slightly at Benjamin, who gave her a small nod. He was reassuring her that he was there for her.
"This is my husband, Prince Daemon Targaryen." Rhaenyra introduced the weird man who gave Alyarra a small smirk. Wasn't he just trying to strangle her with his eyes?
"The Stark girl, what an honor to meet you... I heard you just beared a child. Is that right?" Daemon asked as Alyarra nodded her head and gvae him a faint smile at the mention of her baby boy.
"Oh yes! A new addition to your family! Prince Baelon Targaryen." Alyarra said happily, trying to bond with Aemond's half-sister and uncle. But the girl only received a scowl from the man. "Baelon?" Daemon asked bitterly.
"Yes..." Alyarra reassured him and he rolled his eyes.
"What foolery is that?" Daemon questioned with a bitter tone, making Alyarra frown. Before the girl could answer, Rhaenyra was already dragging him down a hall.
"It was a pleasure, Lady Alyarra." Rhaenyra called as the pair disappeared down the hall. Alyarra turned to Benjamin with a confused look on her face. "That was strange, right?" Alyarra questioned her knight.
"Indeed, my lady." He answered with a small shrug. Alyarra hummed and then set out again for her rooms. That was incredibly weird.
But she took no mind to it. She just wanted to spend time with her husband at once.
-
"Though it is the great hope of this court that Lord Corlys Velaryon survive his wounds, we gather here with the grim task of dealing with the succession of Driftmark." Alyarra was nervous and she didn't even know why as the succesion of Driftmark had no impact on her life or Aemond's.
She stood dutifully next to Aemond and his family, keeping her eyes on Ser Otto as he adressed the court from the Iron Throne. "As Hand, I speak with the King's voice on this and all other matters. The crown will now hear the petitions. Ser Vaemond of House Velaryon."
Alyarra grabbed Aemond's hand in hers as she shifted her gaze to Ser Vaemond who started spewning some words about House Velaryon's history. Alyarra watched intently, but then noticed Aegon turning every so often to look at her. The gesture only made her roll her eyes at him.
"The true, unimpeachable blood of House Velaryon runs through my veins."
"As it does in my sons, the offspring of Laenor Velaryon..." Alyarra shifted her gaze to Princess Rhaenyra, shifting her stance which only made Aemond look down at her and give her a small smile.
"If you cared so much about your house's blood, Ser Vaemond, you would not be so bold as
to supplant its rightful heir. No, you only speak for yourself - and for your own ambitio-" Princess Rhaenyra was cut off by the Queen Alicent.
"You will have chance to make your own petition, Princess Rhaenyra. Do Ser Vaemond the courtesy of allowing his to be heard." Alyarra gulped at the hostility, and her gaze found Catherryn's who was standing amongst the nobles. The girl mouthed the word 'drama' to Alyarra and then made a face.
"What do you know of Velaryon blood, Princess? I could cut my veins and show it to you and you still wouldn't recognize it." Alyarra widened her eyes at the bold accusations the man was so blatantly throwing. This had to be treason, right?
"This is about the future and survival of my house, not yours. My Queen, my Lord Hand. This is a matter of blood, not ambition. I place the continuation of the survival of my house and my line above all. I humbly put myself before you as my brother's successor... the Lord of Driftmark
and Lord of the Tides." Alyarra looked up to Aemond, who had a rather amused look on his face.
Of course he would enjoy his half sister getting obliterated before the entire court.
Alyarra had to admit she felt badly for the young Lucerys Velaryon, he was so young and getting judged in front of the entire court. It must be grueling.
Princess Rhaenyra started talking but was cut off by a herald as the doors to the Great Hall opened.
"King Viserys of House Targaryen, the First of His Name, King of the Andals, and the Rhoynar, and the First Men, Lord of the Seven Kingdoms, and Protector of the Realm." Alyarra gasped without even realizing as she stretched her neck to look at the King.
Was it even possibly that for the almost entire year she had spent in King's Landing, she had never met the King? She looked as the man slowly made his way to the throne, and her heart shrunk at the sight. He really was as sickly as Cregan would say. Poor man.
Alyarra looked up at Aemond, who seemed rather unimpressed at the scene before him. His face was rather stoic, so was Helaena's, and Aegon's. Did they not care for their father? Surely he couldn't have been that neglectful?
"I must... admit... my confusion. I do not understand why petitions are being heard
over a settled succession. The only one present... who might offer keener insightinto Lord Corlys's wishes is the Princess Rhaenys." Alyarra looked at the older woman, her gaze locking with the girl next to her. Alyarra gave her a smile, which the girl returned.
"Indeed, Your Grace. It was ever my husband's will that Driftmark pass through Ser Laenor to his trueborn son... Lucerys Velaryon. His mind never changed. Nor did my support of him." Princess Rhaenys spoke and Alyarra was happy that the hearing was settled.
"As a matter of fact, the Princess Rhaenyra has just informed me of her desire to marry her sons Jace and Luke to Lord Corlys's granddaughters, Baela and Rhaena. A proposal to which I heartily agree." Alyarra smiled at the happy news. Surely this was a matter for celebration!
Alyarra looked at Aemond and at Alicent and neither of them seemed happy or content with the news. Except Aegon who was chuckling for some odd reason.
"Well... the matter is settled. Again. I hereby reaffirm Prince Lucerys of House Velaryon as heir to Driftmark, the Driftwood Throne, and the next Lord of the Tides." Should they clap now or...
"You break law... and centuries of tradition to install your daughter as heir. Yet you dare tell me... who deserves to inherit the name Velaryon. No. I will not allow it." Alyarra looked at Catherryn who gave her a look of shock.
'Shit's about to go down' Catherryn mouthed and Alyarra wanted to laugh but she was sure it would be inadequate.
"Allow it? Do not forget yourself, Vaemond." Viserys warned, and Alyarra swallowed. She held unto Aemond's arm as she watched Vaemond.
"That is no true Velaryon, and certainly no nephew of mine." Alyarra was shocked at the accusation. Well shocked he would say it in front of the King.
"Lucerys is my true-born grandson. And you...are no more than the second son of Driftmark." That was harsh.
"You... may run your house as you see fit... but you will not decide the future of mine. My house survived the Doom and a thousand tribulations besides. And gods be damned... I will not see it endedon the account of this-" Do not say it.
"Her children... are bastards!" Alyarra's jaw fell to the floor at the insatiable man before her. He must be joking. He didn't say that, right?
"And she... is... a whore." Gasps were heard as the King stood up.
Before anyone could even react, Daemon Targaryen had beheaded Vaemond Velaryon in front of the court. Alyarra shrieked as Aemond moved to stand before her, shielding her from looking at the gory scene. He had been too late, she had already seen his head be split in half.
Alyarra covered her mouth with her hand, trying to conceal her horrified scream. Sure she had seen her brother kill countless animals, but a human head being split in half so easily like that? Never.
Soon enough everybody was being ushered out of the Great Hall. And Alyarra clung unto her husband for good life. Traumatized at what had transpired in that Hall.
-
"Do we really have to go?" Alyarra complained as Aemond and herself headed towards the family supper that night. Normally she would be glee about spending time with his family, but after the petition... she was not really excited.
"My grandsire commands it, my love. You know I also do not want to attend but duty calls." Aemond answered as Alyarra pressed her lips together in disdain.
The look was wiped off her face as the pair of them walked into the dining hall. Alyarra put up the biggest smile she could muster on her face as everyone turned to look at them.
Baela, Rhaena, Lucerys, and Jacaerys were huddled together whilst Aegon stood in the other side of the room. Otto and Helaena were talking quietly as Rhaenyra and Alicent sat silently.
Alyarra moved to greet Alicent with a kiss on her cheek, as the pair had grown rather close during Alyarra's pregnancy. "You look stunning, your grace." Alyarra told the Queen who smiled at her.
"You are most kind, my girl. You too look a daydream." Alicent answered, and the small interaction made Daemon and Rhaenyra whisper amongst themselves silently.
Alyarra moved to stand by Aemond who was glaring at Aegon, and then Aegon moved towards his brother. "Let me propose a truce, brother. Just for supper. Please. I need to shit talk our whore of a sister." Aegon pleaded.
"You may shit talk and I will respond. But I will still kill you if you look once towards Alyarra." Aemond warned his brother, who rolled his eyes and started complaining about having to sit with their stranged family. Alyarra sighed and looked around the room, her eyes locking with Baela.
The girl moved towards Alyarra, giving her a small smile. "Lady Alyarra Stark, it is a pleasure to finally meet you." The girl said in a kind tone.
"Lady Baela... I am also happy to meet you. Congratulations on your betrothal. I am sure you and Prince Jacaerys will be most happy." Alyarra replied kindly.
"Thank you. I also believe congratulations are due on your own babe." Baela said, making Alyarra smile widely. "Oh thank you! Baby Baelon is definitely a joy on my life." Alyarra said.
"Is married life what you planned?" Baela asked suddenly and when she notice Alyarra's look of surprise she winced at her own words.
"I am so sorry! I-I barely have any girls my age to ask. Well... I really have none. I apologize for my forwardness." Baela said in a most embarrassed tone and Alyarra couldn't help the smile that crept unto her face.
"It is quite alright..." Alyarra chuckled heartedly.
"Marriage isn't easy, but what easy comes easy goes. Truly, as long as there is love and respect, you will be more than fine. It might not be what I envisioned but I wouldn't have had it any other way now." Alyarra had taken the girl's hands in hers.
Before Baela could respond, the doors had opened and in King Viserys was carried to his spot on the table. Alyarra moved towards her husband, taking her seat at the end of the table besides him. "What did she want?" Aemond whispered.
"Just wanted some advice." Alyarra told him and gave him a tiny smile, which he returned.
"How good it is... to see you all tonight... together." Said the King in a croaky voice as he looked around the room. After that, Alicent took part in her prayer. And Alyarra was shocked that she would mention Vaemond in front of his own murderer.
After the prayer, Aemond reached for Alyarra's hand. He rested his own hand over hers on top of the table for everyone to see.
"This is an occasion for celebration, it seems. My grandsons, Jace and Luke, will marry their cousins, Baela and Rhaena, further strengthening the bond between our houses. A toast to the young Princes... and their betrothed." The King spoke, and Alyarra was half expecting him to congratulate them on their babe but was widely disappointed.
"Let us toast as well Prince Lucerys... the future Lord of the Tides." It left a sour taste in her mouth that the King didn't mention his own son and Alyarra could only look at Alicent who seemed as uneasy as her.
"And let us toast as well to our son, Prince Aemond, and his wife, Lady Alyarra. As you might remember they just welcomed their first born son into the world." Alicent spoke, raising her cup and speaking in a bitter tone at the lack of acknowledgement the King showed his own son.
Alyarra smiled faintly at the Queen. "Hear, hear!" Otto celebrated whilst Helaena clapped gleefully. "Ah yes... a son... very well done." Was all Viserys said and now Alyarra understood well why Aemond was so bitter towards his father. He could give two flying shits about Aemond and his life.
After that, Alyarra droned out the little speech Viserys began to give. He was scolding his family, and Alyarra had taken no part in what had strained them to begin with so she chose to ignore it. She just held Aemond's hand and stared straight ahead waiting for all the toasts to be over.
After Alicent and Rhaenyra were done with their toasts, Alyarra felt ready to eat and be done with the tension in the room. She drank from her goblet and watched how Aegon stood from his seat, seemingly moving to pour himself more wine whilst saying something to Baela. Whatever Aegon said made Jacaerys mad, and he had slammed his hands on the table and stood up angrily.
It was just drama after drama with these people, wasn't it? She was beginning to miss her dinners with her and just Cregan.
Her heart dropped when Aemond followed, standing up slowly and dropping her hand in the procress. "My love..." Alyarra whispered at her husband. He ignored her as he stared at his nephew.
"To Prince Aegon and...Prince Aemond. We have not seen each other in years, but I have fond memories of our shared youth. And as men, I hope we may yet be friends and allies. To you and your family's good health, dear uncles." Jacaerys toasted to his uncles.
Alyarra sighed in relief and smiled at Jacaerys, she then gazed at Aemond. She was trying to will him with her mind to just sit the fuck down.
"To you as well." Aegon said stoicly and in an annoyed manner. Aemond rolled his eye and sat back down, much to Alyarra's own relief.
"I would like to toast to Baela and Rhaena. They'll be married soon. It isn't so bad. Mostly he just ignores you... except sometimes when he's drunk." Alyrra was horrified at Helaena's toast, and she seethed whenever Daemon laughed.
The King ordered for music and finally the tension was lifted as the bards played and the servants brought out the food. "I thought somebody was close to losing their head for a second there." Alyarra jested to her husband, who chuckled slightly.
"Dinner is not yet over, sweet angel." He replied, making her smack him slightly in the shoulder. Alyarra was happy as she looked around the table and finally everyone was getting along.
Alyarra and Otto clapped in beat as they watched Helaena and Jace dance. "In another life, maybe Helaena was a dancer." Otto jested, making Alyarra and Alicent laugh in unison. Alyarra was so caught up in conversation with Otto and Alicent that she jumped whenever Aemond slammed his fist into the table and stood up abruptly.
Her heart raced as she looked at her husband who was holding out his cup. "Final tribute. To the health of my nephews. Jace... Luke... and Joffrey." Please say something good.
"Each of them handsome, wise... hm...strong." Alyarra breathed out in exasperation at her husband. "Aemond." Alyarra warned him, trying to get him to sit back down.
"Come... let us drain our cups to these three... Strong boys." Alyarra pinched Aemond hard on his forearm, but clearly it didn't even tickle him.
"I dare you to say that again." Jace stated, walking over to size Aemond up. Which was laughable due to Aemond's much larger and stronger physique.
"Why? 'Twas only a compliment. Do you not think yourself Strong? Alyarra gasped as Jacaerys punched Aemond straight in the jaw. A punch that barely moved her husband.
The Hells all broke loose at the same time, Aegon grabbing Lucerys and slamming him into the table.
Aemond chuckled in a taunting manner and easily pushed his nephew to the ground, proving he was the dominant male in the situation. Aemond laughed at how easily Jacaerys went flying into the ground. Alyarra rushed to her husband, grabbing his arm forcefully.
"Why would you say that?!" Alyarra asked her husband, she was clearly in pure distress as Alicent also rushed to Aemond.
"I was merely expressing how proud I am of my family, my love. Mm, though it seems my nephews aren't quite as proud of theirs." Aemond answered, yanking his arm from Alyarra's grip and stepping up to Jace who lunged at his uncle again but was stopped by Daemon.
Alyarra watched in fear as Daemon turned around to stare at her husband. Please don't slice him in two. She prayed.
Aemond and Daemon stared each other down and then Aemond left the dining hall slowly. "I'll deal with him." Alyarra told Alicent and then she followed after him.
Aemond was hurrying down the corridor, clearly fuming. "Aemond stop!" Alyarra called after him, making him stop and turn around very slowly.
"Do not scold me." He warned, and this made Alyarra huff in annoyance. "Why would you ruin dinner? Everyone was having such a great time and getting along!" Alyarra questioned him as she approached him.
"You were having a great time. You're like a fish in the water with those people, are you not?" Aemond said in the most bitter tone.
"Everyone was enjoying themselves! You didn't have to get up and call those boys bastards." Alyarra contested, and that was the drop that spilled the glass.
"Gods, you are such a complacent and submissive girl! That nephew of mine was blatantly making fun of me to my face and you just expected me to sit idly by just because you were having a fun time?" Aemond's tone was slightly raising.
"I am not submissive! Am I wrong for wanting you to get along with your family? Am I wrong for wanting to unite everyone and stop this stupid bickering?" Alyarra asked.
"Gods you are so fucking daft." Aemond had taken to grabbing Alyarra's head and tapping at sides of her head aggresively. "My family will never be fucking united, Alyarra. What don't you understand?!" He basically yelled as he shook her head.
"If only you trie-" He didn't even let her finish.
"Oh! I have to try?! I was the one wronged and you think I am the one that has to try?! For fuck's sake, if you like my half sister so much then why don't you go and crawl inside of her cunt?!" Alyarra's palm didn't take long to come in contact with his cheek in a hard slap.
Aemond let her go, a surprised expression on his face. It didn't hurt, not at all, but it did surprise him.
"I am your wife. You will give me respect. I am not daft, nor submissive or complacent. I understand you are angry, but you do not get to take it out on me! I have done nothing but be there for you and your stupid fucking tantrums. So you give me the respect I deserve. Do you understand?" Alyarra asked as Aemond's face softened, clearly responsive to her little outburst.
"Love... I am sorr-" Alyarra cut him off.
"Oh save it." She snapped and walked off in the direction of their chambers.
She loved him but she wasn't going to let him walk all over her because he was angry.

Author's note:
This chapter is literally 5k words... I am exhausted after writing it :) But I loved inserting Alyarra into family drama that she was no idea about. Also Viserys... he can't even give Aemond props for bearing him a grandson.
Also what did you think of the little slap Alyrra gave him?
ALSO I wanted to give two shoutouts for fellow mutuals of mine that have started their own stories!! randomreader000000 has 'Violent Delights' and it is such an interesting plotline, definitely different than anything I have read so far!!!
