Chapter 7

Star's pov

Alright. I can do this. Star thought for encouragement.

"Clear thoughts said to ask around for three moon kits." She mumbled to herself.

Scar had successfully gotten a room in the medicine den and Clear thoughts was pretty happy with him. Although Scar did currently have to hunt for himself and Clear thoughts.

Star walked up to the center and started looking around for the happiest cats she could find. Happy cats were sometimes happy parents. Star smiled.

Most cats around here would sell rare prey, or sparkling rocks. Crystals even, if they could find them. Clear thoughts and Star usually got their herbs here.

Star walked up to a cat a little younger than Star herself. She was selling stunning flowers, Star could smell it. Purples and blues and oranges must have caught every cat's eye.

"Excuse me?" Star said, walking up, opening another leaf pouch that was strapped to her side, and pulling out a rabbit.
"Yes? Would you like to buy anything? I need prey if you are." The she cat sounded sad.

"I have a rabbit. Could I have that bright red rose?" Star loved roses. They smelled so nice.
The she cat smiled and handed it to her with care. "Of course." Star handed over the rabbit and the cat took it gratefully.

"Are you low on prey?" Star asked, trying to create conversation.

The she cat sighed. "Yes. My mother is very sick with greencough. You're a healer right? Her name is Sunny. I'm trying to get enough prey to feed my younger siblings."

Star felt sorry for the young cat. Sunny was close to death and had one moon kits at home from her second litter. Her mate had died a while ago from a training accident and Sunny's only had one kit from her first litter. This she cat was Lillyflower, Sunny's daughter.

"I know you're mother. She is a very sweet cat. She is healing well."

Lillyflower smiled at this and said, "thank you. It makes me feel a bit better to hear that."

"Glad to help. By the way, do you know any cats who have older litters?" Star questioned.
"Oh, yes. Nettle and Jay have five moon kits. Three of them."
"Thanks. See you again sometime!" Star waved goodbye and set off to Nettles den.

Nettle lived in one of the caves which made up a long wall circling the junkyard.
"Is anyone here?" Star called out as she approached the entrance.
"Coming!" Said a voice from farther in the cave.
Star waited for a moment before a tom came out with a kit following him.
"Hello! I'm Jay. Star, right? Healer?" The tom said.
"Yes. I'm looking for future healers. We need them because of the greencough outbreak. Can I look at your kits?"
Jay seemed anxious for a moment. "Of course." He said after a while. "But if you did find one to become the next healer, would they be hanging around greencough in the next moon?"
Clear thoughts had told this to Star too, since parents were likely to ask this.
"No. Either Clear thoughts or I would come and train him here or somewhere else. He wouldn't be going near the greencough cats.

Jay sounded more relieved after that. "Thanks. That's Seed. He's doesn't talk much, and is very curious." Seed hadn't talked the whole conversation. "Seed is a single brown color with a darker brown stripe down his back. His front left paw is white." Jay said, describing his kit with love.

"Hmm. Can I see your other two kits?"
"Follow me. Nettle is out training right now, so it's just me here." He led her down one of the tunnels to a room where two kits were fighting.

"Give me back my leaf!" One squealed. "Dad! Bug took my leaf! He won't give it back!

Jay quickly broke up the fight and then turned to Star with a nervous laugh. "The black one is Night. She has a white ear tip and small white dapples on her pelt. Her eyes are a bright blue."

"The chestnut tabby is Bug. The biggest of his litter."

Star wasn't sure. "I might go look at some other litters and maybe come back to this one."
Jay led her out the door of the cave and they said goodbye and Star recommended Lilyflower's flowers.

Star had visited two more litters in the junkyard before she came across Wish's litter of three moon year old kits. Wish was a golden cream she-cat who was a little bit rude and didn't care much for her kits.

"Star. What do you want?" Wish sighed as Star entered their den. It was built onto a pile of junk and was made from three metal boards stacked together.
"I'm here to look and see if either of your two kits are worthy of a healer's apprentice. May I look at your kits?"
"Sure, sure." Wish said, waving her paw. "They're in the back."

Star padded around the back of the den as Wish went back inside. She heard little yelps coming from back there and when she turned the corner, she gasped.

They were both playing on the big pile of junk. Junk could have many metal twoleg things that could permanently hurt a kit.

"Stop that!" Star yelled at them.
They both got off with a scurry and ran up to her.
"Why do your eyes look like that?" Said one. A she-kit.

"Why did you tell us to get off-"
"Star! I've been looking for you!"
Star turned to hear Claw racing up to her.
"What are you doing?" He asked.
"Looking for suitable kits to become healers." Star said, smiling.
"Cool! Aw are you interviewing these kits here? The tabby tom is adorable. Especially with those big yellow eyes!" Claw said in a kit voice.

"Ha. Yea sure, I am interviewing them."
"Hey! I'm adorable too! I'm more adorable! I'm a bengal!" Said the little she-kit.
"Ok. What are your names?"
"I'm Fern!" The she-kit said.
"I'm Half wing." Said the little tom. "What can we do for you?" He asked.

"I'm looking for good healer apprentices." Star said.

"You've been doing that all day?" Claw said.
"Yes." Star sighed, glancing at the tom kit.
"Well, come home for dinner. I caught something awesome today!" Claw said, turning and racing off.
"Bye!" Star yelled after him. Then she turned back to the kits. Fern had raced off to play some more before the sun set, but Half wing stayed.

"Half wing, I'm going to bring Clear thoughts to see you tomorrow. Tell your mother for me." "Ok!" Half wing said. "See you tomorrow!" "Bye." Star said, running off. "Bye!"
