Chapter 5

Rainkit's pov

"Goldenkit?" She had learned very quickly that Goldenkit liked to hide behind bushes and trees and jump out at her when she least expected it.

"I don't like it when you do this!" She yelled out into the trees.

"Haha! Get used to it!" Goldenkit called from somewhere in the distance.
She ran up, remembering that this was a race, and not a walk.
"The territory is scary." She murmured to herself.
"Is it though?" Goldenkit called again.
"Yep." Giant trees loomed overhead. The moon wasn't visible, neither were the stars.
StarClan cannot see us right now.

"C'mon, slowpoke!"

She groaned. "Calm down!"

"Run!" Goldenkits voice was far off again so she hurried down the path as fast as she could.

I'll beat Goldenkit to the halfway point.

She ran as fast as she could, but he still beat her by a few seconds.

"Ha! I beat you!" He giggled.

"That wasn't even the goal!" she yelled at him. She hated being beaten by Goldenkit.

"Well too bad! I'll race you back, though."

"Let's wait a little. See if Gingerkit and Darkkit come." She said, looking around. "Fineeeee." Goldenkit sighed.

They waited for a little while, but no one came.
"Do you think they are already heading back?"
"No way. My siblings are super slow." Goldenkit laughed.

So they waited for a few more minutes before Goldenkit suddenly yelled, "Threetwoonego!" And bolted off in the direction of camp.
Rainkit groaned again, chasing after him. "Why do you make me do this?"

As they were heading back, something rustled in the bushes to her left.

Goldenkit had eventually gotten tired and decided to walk alongside her.
"Goldenkit?" She whispered. "I think somethings in the bushes."

"Pft. Yeah right." The rustle came again. "Actually nevermind."
Rainkit sniffed the air. "Hang on. Remember when a bunch of warriors came back from a fight with an animal or something, last new leaf?"
"Yeah... They were stinky after."
"Well, the smell was... like a-"
The thing suddenly lunged over her. Dark orange fur jumped over her face. Bigger than a warrior, the thing skidded to a halt and turned around.

Fox.

She screeched and ran in the opposite direction of the Fox. It bounded after her. She ran as fast as her little paws could carry her.

She ran into a clearing, where the moon illuminated the grass.

She gasped, skidding to a halt.

Gingerkit?

On the ground were two small bodies. Black fur and ginger fur.

Gingerkit and Darkkit. Dead.

"G-Gingerk-kit?" Rainkit padded slowly to the body of her dead friend.

"Gingerkit." big, sad tears fell from her face, hitting Gingerkit.

Rainkit bowed her head, putting it into Gingerkit's fur.

"I've got her!" Rapidclover screamed into the burning trees.
"Rapidclover! I can't find-"

"Rainkit!" Someone yelled in the distance. "Where did the fox go?! Track it!"
Rainkit could hear soft pawsteps behind her, and then a gasp.

"Sunday! I...I love you. Take care of Kit." Rapidclover screamed again.

"But I-" there was a pause. "I love you too! Take care of Rain. Keep her happy!"
"Goodbye, Sunday." Rapidclover whispered, before bounding off, away from Sunday.

"Oh, Rainkit." A paw on her shoulder made her jump.

"Rapidclover! Is that a kit?!"

Someone ran out of a den. "Eat this. Make the kit eat this too." The cat said. "What in your mouse-brained mind told you to go run into a fire?"

"Rainkit?" Rapidclover asked, lifting his paw off her shoulder.

"Tell...me... the truth. I'm not clanborn."
Rapidclover was taken aback. "Um, no. Your mother died giving birth to you."

"Then what was her name?! What was her favorite prey?"
"Rainkit-"
"Don't! I remember! I'm not clanborn!" Rainkit snarled at her father. "Leave me alone!"

She ran off in what she thought was the direction of camp.

She ran head first into Spirittooth, who looked down at her surprised and sadly. "Rainkit?"
But Rainkit didn't hear her name being called.
She continued to run.

Behind her she could hear Treefluff cry out, "My kits!" as Rapidclover brought Gingerkit and Darkkit to the patrol.

Keep running. You'll never escape this though.

I don't care. I'll keep running.

"Rainkit! Stop!"
No.

"Rainkit! You're going to run off the side of camp!"

Rainkit's head perked up just as she tumbled down the side of the carved out hole in the ground that made up ForestClans camp.
She rolled down, hitting her shoulder on a rock which made it hurt a lot. When she got to the bottom, she looked up to find what seemed like the whole clan's eyes on her.
"Rain...kit?" A warrior asked.

"Move aside." Dawnstep, the medicine cat hurried over to her. "Where have you been?!"
"I...I..." Rainkit tried, but she couldn't make herself speak.
"Doesn't matter now. Where are the other kits?"
Rainkit wanted to yell at Dawnstep. And the other cats who were now muttering about her like they always did. Dawnstep wasn't caring about her right now. Just the other kits. The clanborn ones.

"Leave me alone."
"You have scratches all over your pelt-"
"Dawnstep!" Spirittooth yelled, as the patrol ran into camp. "You need to see this. Help Goldenkit with his injuries."
"Coming!"
Dawnstep ran over to the patrol, looked over Goldenkit, and ran to get him herbs. She didn't remember Rainkit lying on the ground on the other side of camp.

Neither did Spirittooth. Or Rapidclover.
What about me?
