Chapter 9
Shade and Jason walk away from Charlie's house, Jason leading them towards the centre of the village. "There are some stalls along here," he says, pointing towards a crowd of people who have collected around a set of wooden stalls and shops. "We should be able to get all the stuff Charlie needs here."
"I'm not going to get her stuff," Shade says, in a rather matter of fact manner.
Jason turns to look at her. "What do you mean you aren't going. I thought you wanted to get outside and look around the village."
"I have something special I need to look for. You go get the ingredients and I'll meet you back at the house later."
Jason looks at the ground and kicks some dirt around gently. "But what do I say when Charlie asks where you are?"
Shade start to look exasperated and wipes her forehead with her hand. "I don't know. Make something up. Or just don't say anything. Up to you."
Shade turns and walks away from Jason. She makes her way towards the centre of the village. "There has to be something like what I'm looking for here." She arrives at a signpost in the centre of the village. There are a few signs on it pointing in varying directions. Shade looks at the signs, scanning them intently. "Come on come on, work with me here." Her eyes land on a sign towards the bottom, it reads Village Hall. "There you are." She turns in the direction the sign is pointing and starts to walk towards the large building at the end of the path. It doesn't look much different to the rest of the buildings in the village, just slightly bigger. If someone didn't know what they were looking for, they could easily just was straight past it. Shade pushes open the large wooden doors and heads inside. She finds herself in a hallway, lit by a large fireplace along one of the edges. There are doors that lead out of the hallway and at the end there is a man sitting next to the fire, seemingly looking over some documents. He looks up from his papers momentarily as Shade enters, but goes back to his work quickly. The doors close behind Shade as she crosses the hallway towards the man. "Excuse me, I was wondering if you have any kind of records that are open to the public?"
The man gestures half-heartedly towards a door across the corridor. Shade thanks the man and heads across to the door. She opens it and steps through. The room on the other side smells dusty and is dimly lit. It isn't a very big room but is filled to the brim with shelves, and the shelves are covered in scrolls and books bound in leather. Shade walks slowly around the room, scanning over the names on the shelves. "Land Ownership, Remembrance of Titles, no these aren't it," she mutters to herself, pouring over each shelf with great detail. "I need to find any information I can on whatever it was Jason was talking about."
Shade thinks back to earlier that morning. She had awoken to the sound of Jason mumbling. She sat up and looked over at him, and he was still asleep. His eyes were closed, but his mouth was moving, words slipping out. He was shaking and shuddering, and the same words kept slipping out. Balance. Shadow. Entity. Suddenly a bright green light filled the room as runes and shapes encompassed his body. They disappeared as quickly as they appeared and suddenly Jason's eyes flew open. Shade laid down and closed her eyes, pretending to be asleep. She hears Jason get up and leave the room.
Back in the room full of records, Shade stops at one of the shelves. "Finally, what I was looking for." She grabs one of the books, this one looking a lot older and a lot larger than the others. The leather binding on the spine was old and tattered, but the title of the book was still somewhat legible. "History of Realm Sensitives in Kalland Village." Shade opens the book and starts to flick through it. "I need to find out what he meant by the entity. If it's something to do with the village, then someone must have recorded it happening before. Those runes were definitely connected to the Realm of Balance," she turns to the relevant page, "so I guess I'll start here."
She starts to read through the section, looking for anyone in the history of the village who had exhibited similar actions. She thumbed through the pages looking for anything like what had happened this morning, anyone who had reported seeing or experiencing anything similar. Her movements were frantic, she was scared of something. She told herself that it wasn't the chance of something happening to hurt Jason, it was because he mentioned a creature, an entity. If something is haunting or, even worse, trying to possess him, they may be able to work out who he is and bring about the prophecy. Jason has to stay safe under her protection, at least for now.
As she is turning the pages of the book, she hears the heavy doors to the town hall swing open with a creak and then a thud. They close again as the sound of plate armour hitting wooden floor moves along the hallway. Shade closes the book and edges towards the closed door, careful not to alert whoever just came in. Muffled talking can be heard on the other side of the door. Shade puts her ear to the door, trying to hear what is being said. It's still muffled by the thick wood of the door, but the words can somewhat be made out.
A strong, gruff voice can be heard talking to the person who was sitting in the hallway earlier. "We need a meeting with the head of the village."
The man sputters, tripping over his words. "I... I... I'm sorry s...s...sir." He steadies his speech slightly and takes a deep breath. "The village chief is in a meeting right now."
Shade slowly cracks open the door and looks into the hallway. A member of the Circle of Grulm is leaning over the man who was until recently doing his work in the hallway. The Grulm member's voice gets quiet as he leans over, getting closer to the man's ear. "Then go and get him."
The man gulps. He gathers his papers and quickly walks towards the large door at the end of the corridor. He knocks shakily and enters. A few seconds later he comes out again, followed by a man dressed in regal garb. His cloak hemmed with golden silk hanging down just above the floor. He addresses the Grulm soldier calmly, unlike his companion who is still shaking behind him. "I am Farboad, chieftain of this village. How may I be of assistance? Please do make it quick, I was in the middle of a very important meeting."
The Grulm soldier straightens up and looks Farboad in the eyes. "I need to see the village charter."
"That can be arranged," Farboad replies, clasping his hands together in front of him. "Why do you need to see it."
"A suspicious character that wasn't here a few weeks ago has been reported around the village. I need the charter to identify them."
Shade gasps, they were talking about Jason. Farboad gestures towards the door to the room full of books and scrolls, the one that Shade is hiding behind. The Grulm soldier looks towards the door, causing Shade to take a step back. The door that she had been holding open a crack closes, causing a loud creak to break the deathly silence that was held in the rest of the building.
The Grulm soldier's gaze snaps to the door. "Who's there?" He starts to make his way to the door. "Show yourself."
Shade's breath catches in her throat. She drops the book and looks around the room, trying to find another way out. There wasn't one. The Grulm soldier's footsteps stop as he reaches the door. He forcefully opens the door, swinging it with such force it slams against the wall causing the building to shake. He looks around the room, slowly moving through the darkness examining every part of it. Shade holds her breath. The Grulm soldier moves further and further through the room, suddenly stopping. He looks down and sees the book that Shade was reading just moments before, laying on the ground cover up. "Interesting." He bends down to pick it up, thumbing through the pages slowly. "This might be just what I was looking for."
He turns around and leaves. He turns back to the chief of the village and shows him the book. "This will suffice, thank you. It's a pleasure doing business."
The door to the room closes as the Grulm soldier walks out. Shade stops holding her breath, and starts gasping for air. With her powers she would have been able to escape easily, but she didn't want to risk hurting herself more than before, maybe being caught outside, especially now the Grulm are looking around the village. She shifts out of the shadows in the corner that had been concealing her, sliding back towards the door. She pushes her ear up against it again just as the large entrance to the building slams shut. The tension in her body finally releases itself, as she starts to breathe again.
"I can't leave through the front door, it's too dangerous," she says as she scans the surrounding room. There is a small window about 10 feet from the floor, small enough to possibly squeeze through, allowing her to escape unseen. She starts to stack books from the library shelves onto the floor in front of the window, crafting a set of makeshift stairs. Once the stairs reach up the window Shade quickly climbs them, pushing on the glass to open the window and squeezing through, falling a few feet to the ground as she reaches the other side. She quickly climbs to her feet and takes off towards the stalls. "I need to find Jason before they do."
Shade darts between the houses, trying not to be spotted, while scanning the crowd of people for Jason. "Don't have been captured already you idiot. Come on, show yourself."
Suddenly, as Shade dashes around a corner, she flies head first into an old woman, knocking both of them to the floor. Shade quickly jumps back to her feet. "How about next time you watch where you're going, you old bat."
As Shade looks down at the old woman, something about her begins to change. Her body begins to morph, her form becoming slimmer and taller. Her clothes change from a shaul and dress to more youthfull aparel. Before long, it wasn't an old woman sitting on the ground before Shade at all, it was someone else entirely. Shade gasps, she can't believe who she is looking at. "Jason?"
