Chapter 4
The tall trees covered in brown leaves sway gently in the breeze as Shade, followed not so closely by Jason, make their way through the forest. They chose to stay off the path to avoid any unwanted eyes catching sight of them, meaning the trees are far closer together than they would usually be. The pair pick their way through the dense undergrowth, stepping over logs and rocks, stumbling over the odd weed. The going is slow and tedious, the forest seeming to go on for miles and miles. The sun starts to set over the world as the duo pass by another tree that looks identical to the last, the same twisted trunk and the same brown leaves. Jason jogs a little in an attempt to catch up to Shade. "I forgot to ask back there, but what was with that explosion you made? It didn't really seem to affect anyone but yourself."
"Explosion I made?"
"Well, you were bleeding and then did something with these weird black tentacle things, which I'm a hundred percent coming back to by the way, and then there was the explosion, and you went flying really far away." He gestures Shade flying through the air with his hand and crashes it into his other hand, making an explosion sound and gesture. "I'm no explosion expert but usually they aren't supposed to be worse for the person creating it than the person who it's for."
Shade continues to walk, not even turning around to look at Jason. "I didn't cause that explosion."
Jason looks puzzled, the cogs turning in his head. "Was it the Grulm then? If it was, I understand why you are so scared of them, that was a pretty powerful thing they did. Plus, the stuff that came out of you was black, and the explosion was white, it doesn't really make sense thematically."
Shade turns around, the edge of her mouth twitching with annoyance. "Stop playing dumb, you know what you did." She jabs him in the chest with her finger. "Are you just doing it to annoy me or something. Is this some kind of cosmic joke to you, he who could not care less?"
Jason's confusion turned to hurt, his eyes widen, and his face softens. "Hey, what's going on? What are you talking about?"
Shade turns on her heels and starts to walk again, waving the back of her hand towards him. "No, don't speak. There is a town roughly half a day's walk in this direction. We should be able to grab some supplies from there."
As Shade's hand drops back to her side Jason reaches out to take it, grabbing her hand and stopping her in her tracks. "No, don't just walk on like nothing you just said matters. What do you mean I know what I did, what did I do?"
Shade pulls her hand back and turns around, slower this time. She looks Jason in the eyes, trying to study for any evidence of him lying or trying to trick her. She could not find any, only finding profound ignorance. "Do you seriously not know what you are?"
"No, I really don't, but I want to know. I have spent my whole life thinking I wasn't special. If you know something that makes me different, I need to know what it is."
Shade sits down on a nearby log, considering her options to herself. Him not knowing how powerful he is means he would be easier to take out. On the other hand, her powers do not work on him even now, when he has no idea how to use his, and the constant travel hasn't left her time to recover from the world jumping, so he would easily overpower her. She decides it's still best to wait to meet up with Sylas and kill him then, but it wouldn't hurt that plan to tell him a little about what is going on, it might even make him trust her more. "Alright, we'll camp here for the night, it's getting too dark for us to continue on anyhow. We set off at dawn, and in the meantime, I'll tell you what I know, but it is far from a complete history."
Jason sits down on a stump just across from her, intent on hearing what Shade has to say. She picks up some sticks and starts to rub them together over some dried grass as she starts the story. "About 10 millennia ago something that we here don't understand caused our two worlds, Ferma and Zilla, to collide. The collision caused our worlds to become connected by three gateways, which we call the realms of Smoke, Balance and Radiance. As far as I understand it, the creation of these realms is what cause our sky to break into three pieces, once for each realm. Take a look." Shade points to the sky, the cracks in it even more visible now in the darkness than in the sunlight. "Each colour of sky represents one of the realms, purple for Smoke, green for Balance and blue for Radiance. I've been told the sky before the collision was beautiful, but I wasn't alive to see it."
Jason leans forward, listening to the history lesson intently.
"Some people in this world have the ability to tap into the realms to use its power," Shade continues. "We call these people sensitives."
"And that's what you are?"
"In a way. Anyway, it was prophesised by a member of the society we are going to see that a sensitive would be born to the other world, and that he will be able to harness all three realms at once. That sensitive is you, and when we found out about you, Sylas sent me to find out what I can. That's why I was watching you and I guess by extension why you are here."
Jason leans back on the stump, using his elbows to prop himself up as he looks into the sky. "Wow that's a lot to take in. I always wanted to be special, but I never expected this is how it would go down. I'm really shocked."
The dried grass sparks and then goes up in flames. Shade hurries to place the grass on some wood and blows on it to stimulate the flame. It isn't too long until there is a proper sized fire in the middle of the little area of logs and stumps the pair found. Jason looks over to Shade, his face bursting with a hundred more questions he wants answered. "Shade, tell me about yourself, a girl who goes around entering people's dreams using the power of tears in space, several millennia under your belt, your story must be amazing."
"Hey now, I just gave you a history lesson, I think its time you tell me about you. What I've told you about yourself is really all I know, and its mainly about what you are to become not about you as a person."
Jason chuckles, "well I guarantee you it's not that interesting. Aside from this whole prophecy business I'm not anything special on earth. I'm a regular 16 year old boy from a regular English city. I grew up in a household with parents that loved me for sure, but they were busy a lot, and the attention they did have was split across me and my sister and brother."
Shade lies back on her log and looks up at the stars. "I guess the closest I would have to a parent is Sylas, he was there for me as long as I can remember."
Jason snaps upright quickly, pointing at Shade. "Hah, you told me something about your past, miss dark and mysterious."
"I guess I did, but I promise it will not happen again, at least not now. Continue with your story."
Jason lay back down on his stump, also looking up at the stars. "Well, I never acted up at home and very rarely got into trouble at school, but despite that I was never an A grade student, never top of my class, always average. People never seem to notice me. I have to try hard to be seen, like wearing my uniform wrong or stretching my hand up extra high and extra quick in class. When I was chasing you down the corridor, I'm pretty sure that was the first time some of those people have ever actually ever bothered to look at me."
Shade chuckles. "Don't worry, here you won't have to worry about not being noticed."
"How do you mean?"
"Well, you are the first and only Fermie to come here. People will notice you for sure. Our people look pretty similar to Fermies except for the eye colour. The majority of people from here have red eyes, and even the circle of Grulm have managed to make all their eyes red somehow. I assume it's so they can identify people to imprison easier."
"That would be a nice change of pace, I guess. But what about you, your eyes are green, but you say you are from here?"
"My eyes are a side effect of the Realm of Smoke." Shade yawns. "I was told when I was young that my eyes changed from red to green, and that my powers were the reason."
"Well, I guess if people are gonna be noticing us, its better to be noticed together. I would guess we have a better chance of escaping if we work as a team. And hey, you told me more about your past. It seems your icy exterior is starting to melt." Shade gives no response. Jason looks over to the log that Shade was sitting on and sees her asleep. He goes back to looking at the stars, wondering about what is going on back home. Time works differently here, so to his friends and family he will have only been gone a few minutes if that, despite being in this world for half a day. "If I'm going to get out of here, I'm going to need to trust Shade," Jason says to himself under his breath. "I can't give up; I will get home." Jason sighs and goes back to looking at the stars, the distinct colours of purple, green and blue shining brighter than they did in the day. The stars seem to twinkle with more power than any star ever did on earth, shooting stars passing overhead. Jason couldn't believe that this world was real, and he knows no one back home would believe him when he gets back there. His vision starts to wander as his eyelids feel heavy, and he drifts off into a peaceful sleep.
But while these two sleep peacefully, something nearby is stirring. A large carriage is being pulled down the path through the forest, passing by the sleeping pair and further along the path, the people on it decked out in enough armour and carrying enough weapons to take out a small army. As soon as it appeared, it was gone, rolling off into the darkness of the night.
