Hospital Visit ~02/06/22~
Jin is normally a cautious teenager.
He's conscious of all of his surroundings and the people he's around, always flicking his eyes around a room. The one time he lets his guard down is when his mother is around, her presence alone basically eliminating his constant anxiety from his time with his father. For five years under his father's "care", he was severely beaten and malnourished, smaller and thinner than any teenager should medically be. Night saved him when she found him, taking him under her care and adopting him. After five years, he finally had a mother again…
With how frail Jin was when he was found, he was prone to getting hurt and sick a lot. But the one thing the small family didn't consider was how frail his bones were. And they found out the hard way, unfortunately.
"Jin, honey! Dinner is done!" Night called out from the kitchen, Hartz helping her set the table. Her son was up in his room working on the small amount of homework he had from school today, the young mother smiling softly as she kissed her fiancé. “Thanks for the help baby.”
“Oh, it wasn’t a problem! Anything for my favorite mama…” Hartz said suggestively, a sly smile on his lips as he went for her neck. Night squealed and tried pushing him away with a laugh, stopping abruptly when she heard a loud crash and a broken scream.
“M-Mama…!” Her son cried, the twenty-two-year-old sending herself out of the kitchen and to where she heard the cry. She came across Jin at the bottom of the stairs, on the floor and holding his arm in obvious pain.
“Jin! What happened?!” She squeaked, kneeling beside him and brushing her son’s black hair from his face. He was crying and it broke her heart, shifting his body slightly and whimpering.
“I-I fell down the stairs a-and I heard something snap…” The teen whined, Night standing and helping him up carefully.
“Hartz, get your shoes on! We need to take Jin to the hospital!”
“On it honey!”
Night kissed her son’s head and wiped away his tears, taking his jacket and putting it on his shoulders.
“Don’t worry baby, we’ll get you taken care of…” She said softly, slipping her shoes on as Hartz opened the front door.
“W-what about dinner…?”
“Buddy, don’t worry about dinner. You’re more important than food.” Hartz butt in, the family getting out into the car. Night helped him into the backseat and kissed his head again, smiling softly before getting into the passenger seat, the car leaving the driveway.
~~~
Jin whined softly as he stared down at the temporary splint the nurse put his arm in, sighing as he scrolled through his phone. It was obvious that his arm was broken, but they still needed an x-ray to determine exactly how bad the break was. The teen couldn’t help but feel incredibly guilty that they were sitting in a hospital room, glancing between his mother and her fiancé with sad eyes. Night looked up from her phone and caught dull green eyes with her grey, shutting the device off.
“What’s the matter, my little ghost?” She asked softly, holding her hand out to him. Jin immediately felt tears fill his eyes, reaching his non-broken arm out and taking her hand.
“I-I’m so sorry…” The sixteen-year-old whimpered, squeezing her hand tightly. Night frowned, standing and joining him on the hospital bed.
“Whatever for?”
“F-for this… W-we could be sitting down and eating dinner, b-but I had to mess up and now look where we are…!”
Not only was he guilty, he was angry. This was not how his family should spend their night, stuck in a hospital room waiting for x-rays and casting.
“Honey bunny, Hartz and I are in no way upset with what happened. Accidents happen, so don’t beat yourself up over this.” Night explained gently, kissing his head. Hartz walked over and sat on the other side, ruffling Jin’s hair with a small smile.
“Your mother is right, bud. We know you didn’t mean to hurt yourself and it doesn’t mean we’re angry with you.”
“B-but, dinner…”
“Dinner isn’t as important as my favorite little ghost boy.” Night cooed, pinching his cheek gently. Jin giggled softly and carefully pushed her hand away, sniffling and wiping his tears away.
“T-thanks mama… Thanks Hartz…”
A knock was heard and a doctor poked his head through the door, smiling at the small family.
“Hello, how’s everyone doing here?” He asked, stepping in further and closing the door. He held a clipboard and a couple larger black sheets, walking over and taking a seat.
“We’re doing okay, just waiting on the x-rays.” Night answered, squeezing her son’s hand gently.
“Well, wait no more because they just finished printing them. Now, Jin, I don’t know what you did, but the break was way too clean. What was it you said happened?” The doctor asked, flicking on the light table and sticking the x-rays on it. Clear as day in the pictures was a straight diagonal break, no curve and splintering. It just… snapped. Like a twig.
“I-I fell down the stairs…” Jin said softly, wincing when he adjusted his arm slightly. The doctor looked quite surprised, looking between the x-ray and the young man.
“Oh dear, that’s quite the way to do it, son. Looking at your chart however, your bone density is severely low which means you haven’t had enough calcium. It’s an easy fix for such a complicated issue, calcium tablets you can get from a pharmacy or grocery store and milk.” The doctor smiled, taking Jin’s splinted arm carefully to examine. The teen winced and squeezed Night's hand tightly, biting his lip to stop himself from whimpering. “We’ll get this casted and then you’re free to go home. As long as you take those tablets and drink your milk, your bones should harden up and not be so breakable.”
“T-thank you…” Jin nodded with a small smile, Night kissing his head gently.
“So, my next question to you is, what color do you want the main plaster to be?”
Jin blinked, tilting his head at the question. Color?
“I get to… choose the color…?” He asked, looking between his parents. Night laughed softly at his question, nodding to him.
“Of course honey, whatever color you want.”
“Even blue…?”
“Light blue or dark blue, son?” The doctor asked, making Jin’s heart flutter and a smile to adorn his lips.
“Dark blue please…”
“Absolutely. I’ll run and grab the materials and then we’ll get that arm set for you.” The doctor nodded with a smile, walking out of the room and closing the door.
~~~
Jin stared down at the plaster that sat on his arm, constantly running a finger over the rough material of the cast. The whole thing felt weird to him but knew it was necessary, watching as Night came walking back to the car with a grocery bag.
“Alright baby boy, like the doctor said, calcium pills should help strengthen your bones. I expect you to take these once a day before breakfast, okay?” Night said as she crawled back into the car, shutting the door and getting her seatbelt on.
“Okay mama…” Jin agreed, leaning his head against the headrest of his seat. He let out a sigh and held his stomach when it growled. “I can’t wait to go home and eat… I’m so hungry…”
“I know baby, don’t worry, we’ll be home soon.”
“Okay…”
The rest of the drive home was quiet, not that the family minded. The radio played softly and Jin scrolled through his phone silently, his casted hand fiddling with the fabric of his coat. Once they pulled into the driveway of their home, the car shut off, the family getting out and walking to the door together. Night smiled at her son and kissed his head, unlocking and opening the door.
“I’m very proud of you, my little spirit.” The young mother told him, everyone coming in from the cold. Jin smiled softly and hugged her, nuzzling his nose into her shoulder.
“Thank you mama…” He mumbled, looking up when Hartz joined the hug. “Hi… dad…”
“Hey buddy! You know how much your mama and I love you?” Hartz smiled, closing his eyes and tightening his arms slightly.
“A lot…”
“We most certainly do, sweetie. Forever and always.” Mama laughed, looking toward the kitchen. “How about I go heat up dinner and we finally sit down and eat?”
“Sounds great, baby.”
“Yes please, mama…” The boys said together, Night shaking her head and leaving the embrace.
“Alright alright, come on boys.” She told them, the three going into the kitchen to finally eat their dinner.
I bet you’re wondering about Jin. What about his bones? Did they get better? Well… Despite the calcium tablets and drinking more milk, much to his dismay, the bone density never really got better. With further testing, it turns out Jin suffered from Osteogenesis Imperfecta, a condition he should’ve been diagnosed with when he was born. Does the teen let it bother him? No, not at all. It only means he has to be even more careful than before so as to not break any more bones.
Well, hopefully after the next few breaks.
But that’s a story for a different time~
