On with the chapter~

~~~~~
Time favored them at that moment.
The seconds slowed down to minutes, and minutes, to hours. The school bell should've rung minutes ago. Yet, at that moment, it seemed the hourglass was theirs to hold. The only fingerprints tainting the glass surface would be theirs and theirs only.
Oh, how many things people would give, how many wounds they would endure, and how many lives some people would take to hold that very hourglass? Terminally ill lovers? Victims of forbidden love? How many lives would a mother take to speak to her son before they parted ways permanently? How many years of suffering for just one more grain of sand? One last kiss, one last sweet murmur before their breath leaves the world for good?
Too many.
Too many to waste it on the two people called Kim Seokjin and Lee Chaerin.
But perhaps, the universe pitied them. For that immeasurable myriad of people would later have one more.
Alongside time, both Seokjin and Chaerin's viewpoints of each other slowed down as well. No, no, softened, was more like it.
Up close, Chaerin could see tiny blemishes on Seokjin's skin where she always thought were smooth as clay.
And Seokjin noticed how long her eyelashes were and how well they framed her eyes.
There was a strand of hair that stuck out midair within Seokjin's otherwise perfect hairstyle.
Slowly, Seokjin's flawless mask of crystal and ivory melted away. His cheeks weren't of fine china, lips of rubies, or eyes of diamonds. A halo didn't glow above his head, and white feathers disappeared.
No, no.
Seokjin was a human.
Chaerin realized with shame that she began to idolize him into something he wasn't. Seokjin wasn't a sculpture. He wasn't perfect, even though he was half an inch away from being it. He was soft, he was warm.
And so, with that newfound information, Chaerin abandoned the fear of shattering an exquisite art piece and melted into the hug, hoping it would be enough to comfort him. Hoping that while it may not lessen his tears, it will make the tears in his heart less.
Seokjin couldn't remember the last time someone hugged him like this.
___
"I...You can let go of me now."
Despite this, Seokjin's arms didn't move.
"Well...you're not letting me–"
The hourglass containing precious diamonds retracted, and a shrill ring sounded throughout the school building.
Back to the life of textbooks, returning to the real world and face withdrawal after experiencing paradise. Back to a life where model students are framed in plexiglass and failures get tossed away.
Back to a life devoid of warmth or colors.
Slowly, the two figures stepped away from each other.
"I guess I'll see you around...?" Chaerin asked, hopeful, but ready for rejection.
Seokjin took a breath, and then unwavering, made eye contact with her,
"Lee Chaerin," he began, no remnants of the crying boy he was minutes ago, "from this day forward, I'm going to show you how colorful the world can be."
Oh, how gorgeous that face was when it wasn't marred with tears.
And so, on that day, standing on the school rooftop, two strangers made a promise.
