I'm Still Broken

I lost track of where I was after a few hours. I just couldn't help myself honestly.
Once I crossed the state line, I was shocked.
"I drove four hours already? It only feels like maybe one..." I mumbled.
Yes, I had the music blaring, so that probably didn't help my situation at all.
Since I was in Shreveport, it's only forty five minutes to a place that I didn't miss at all.
My old school.
"Might as well. Maybe I can meet up with a couple of old friends I guess."
I was talking about Dawson, who was probably the most redneck person you'd ever meet.
He was probably still in his senior year in high school or possibly a freshmen in college at Louisiana State or something.
I smiled, remembering the stupid things we did when we were kids way back when.
"Wonder if his dad still drinks as much as he used to..." I mumbled out loud.
It was pushing eight, so if any time would be good to see him, now would be the time.
Thing was, I haven't had contact with the kid in over a decade, so I need to stop by Butch and Carlie's house first to see if he ever moved out or not...
—————————
I made it to the city that I didn't miss a bit. My plan was just to see him again and maybe stay the night and return to Texas tomorrow.
"Jeez, the disease must've really hit this place."
I got the feeling of guilt, not seeing these people sooner than I should've to see if they were even alive.
"Is Dawson even alive...? No, I can't think like that. Let's just go to their house, assuming that it hasn't burned down yet or something."
Around ten minutes later, I made it to the Day residence, and I quickly hopped out of the truck and knocked on the front door.
No answer at first, so I tried again.
"Butch? Carlie? It's me, Noah! I just wanted to check in on you guys!" I called out.
Still nothing.
I began to walk back to the truck when I heard a male voice come from the window upstairs.
"Noah?"
I looked up to see Dawson's blonde head poking out the window, and I smiled cheekily.
"Let me in man! We have a lot to talk about."

Unfortunately, Dawson said that Butch, his dad, was killed on the road alone by infected O people a couple of months ago.
"Wait, I thought the vaccine was stopping all of this." I said.
"I mean yeah it is, but there's still a lot of O's and AB's running the streets. But it's not nearly as much ya know."
I nodded agreeing with him. "What about the rest of your family? Like Carlie and Sawyer?" I asked.
"My mom is visiting a friend in town with Sawyer, my little brother. They'll be back anytime. Anyway, what actually brought you here? And how's your parents?" He asked.
I sighed and lowered my head, and Dawson spoke up quietly.
"Oh no..."
"It's...a long story. I might as well start at the beginning so it all makes sense." I said.
And for the hundredth time, I the entire story of Doki Doki Literature Club, and what that game did to us.
"Wait hold up. How the hell do you get sucked through the dang computer to save four anime characters from a literature club?"
"Dawson, I've been wondering that for three years. Now shut up and lemme tell the story. Might as well get comfortable too. It's gonna be a while."
Once he let me talk, I sort of trimmed it down a lot to save the time and effort. Also to help me hold in the tears.
After about fifteen minutes of Dawson asking the many questions he had, one stood out in particular.
"Wait, you have a step brother? How come you never told me?"
I really didn't know how to answer that at first, because it would result in me going off on a whole different story about how Mark abused us and such.
"I suppose that's a different story." I answered.
"Oh okay. Continue." He said while sipping his sweet tea.
I did, and he finally let me finish.
"And you're telling the truth, right?" Dawson asked, still sort of shocked about all of this.
"Yep. No lies included at all." I said.
"Good, because it would be even harder for me to process this ya know?"
I nodded.
"But jeez, I'm really sorry about your mom Noah. She was really nice to me when I stayed over when you were still here in Louisiana." He said.
I nodded wordlessly again.
"There's something still wrong, I can tell. What is it?"
I sighed and shook my head. "Nothing too major. I just got in an argument with Natsuki before I left to come here."
"About...?"
"Jacob." I said with anger.
Dawson shrugged. "I'm sure you'll get past it soon. You just need a little more time to relax and think about it. But you have to let her and other people help you. It's the best medicine Noah."
I thought about it for a minute, then I nodded, agreeing with him. "Yeah you're right D. I should've let her help."
Even though she was kind of mean about it, I understand where she was coming from. It has been over half a year, and it's time to pay more attention to the things I still have.
Like my own life, after all of that mess.
"Well, I'll stay here for the night, then I should head back in the morning. Mind if I stay?" I asked.
"Oh of course you can. When my mom gets home I'll explain everything that went down. Don't worry about it. Also, you can sleep in the old guest room that used to be the game room before Sawyer was born."
I thanked him and headed upstairs to the room, which wasn't any different that before.
"Good memories..." I mumbled, thinking about all of the pranks me and Dawson spent here. It was enough to fill a whole chapter, if not more.
I took my shorts and shirt off and I turned off the light and slipped into the comfortable bed.

Ah yes, me and Dawson go way back. I'll update The Truth About the Characters soon about him.
That's all I have for now! Later!
