Familiar Melody

Just a little one-off, with some ✨lore✨

"So, have all of the creatures gotten the hang of their new abilities?" M asked his friend.

M had decided to visit since he hadn't heard from Sabre in a while. Turns out, he and Time had been handling the chaotic situation of 'the creatures suddenly have powers' (Which Sabre had made him promise not to tell the Professor about).

"Yeah, they've gotten mostly used to it at this point. Took a couple days, but now there's not random little explosions or things floating out of nowhere." Sabre says, sipping his coffee and glancing at the blobs nearby.

The blobs were just playing peacefully, either with toys they had received from the village or with each other, having been tired out for now and wanting to relax. They had also been an incident earlier with Sabre's previous cup of coffee, which they felt bad about, and took it as a sign to chill.

"That's good to hear." M smiles. "What have you been up to, aside from keeping an eye on them?"

"Nothing much, mostly because the little guys take up a lot of my day, but I don't mind that. I love having them around." Sabre says, smiling a bit awkwardly. "I have been meaning to look through all the old stuff in the attic though, I should get to that soon."

"Already beat you to it!" A voice cheerfully says from upstairs, laughing.

M and Sabre turn their heads as Time descends from the stairway, brushing dust off his coat, and holding what looks to be some kind of fancy case with a lock on it. It's made of rosewood, with intricate designs of vines and flowers carved into it, and the hinges, lock, and handle made of gold.

The blobs all get excited and start squeaking loudly, hopping over to Time and following him as he makes his way to Sabre and M.

"Seems they know what this is." Time laughs, looking down at the creatures. "I started cleaning out the attic and found this, and it has your initials on it, Sabre. What is it? It's very pretty."

"Is that an instrument case?" M wonders aloud, curiously looking at the wooden case, admiring its details.

"Yeah, it is." Sabre says, his gaze awkwardly focused on his coffee. "It's uh... it's my old violin."

"What?" Time says, shocked. "No way, really?!"

"Since when do you play the violin?" M asks with an inquisitive grin. "You've never even mentioned instruments before, I didn't think you'd be interested in music."

Sabre's face flushed a bright pink, and he sheepishly looked at his friends.

"I just didn't think it was that important." Sabre explained. "Besides, it's been so long since I've played it, I'm probably not even that good anymore."

"Prove it." Time says with a smile, holding up the case.

"What?"

"Play it a little. If you think it's not good, you can stop. Please?" Time asks.

"Time, I-" Sabre starts, but notices everyone in the room looking at him.

M has a curiously interested look. Time is staring, waiting for an answer. Every single blob in the room is looking at him as if he just said he had candy. Sabre nervously sits still for a moment before cracking.

"Oh- Fine. Wait here, I'll get the key for the lock." Sabre sighs, setting his coffee down and heading for the stairs.

The blobs chirp eagerly, while M and Time excitedly wait for him to come back, wondering why Sabre had never mentioned this skill of his before. In a few minutes, Sabre returns holding a small gold key.

He inserts the key into the lock, turns it, and the lock pops open with a 'click'. Opening the case, Sabre removes a beautiful white violin decorated with carvings and colorful painted images of vines, leaves, and flowers, while the metal parts of the instruments are gold, just like the case. He also removes a matching violin bow, painted on its handle a delicate vine with small leaves.

"That... has to be the most gorgeous violin I've ever seen." M says, admiring the instrument.

"He's right, it's stunning." Time says, nodding.

"Thanks, guys." Sabre says, smiling shyly.

All the blobs quiet down as Sabre raises the violin to his shoulder, M and Time watching him prepare to play.

A memory returns to Sabre as he thinks of exactly what song to play. He places the bow on the strings, recalling the memory as he begins a few notes.

She clapped as the little boy finished playing his violin, both of them smiling.

The wind ruffled through the grass and flowers, which surrounded the boy and the woman, along with several small creatures dotted around the two. The woman sat on a stump, while the boy stood a bit in front of her.

The boy lowered his bow and looked to the woman.

"Did I do good, mama?" The boy asked.

"You did wonderfully, my little blossom." The woman smiled. "I can tell you've been paying attention to your lessons. You've improved so much since last week."

"Thank you! I studied really had 'cuz I knew it'd make you happy!" The little boy beamed, his small wings fluttering as he hopped a little.

"Careful, you don't want to drop your violin, honey." The woman said.

"Oops, sorry mama..."

"It's alright, just remember to be careful."

The two looked around, noticing that the boy had a little audience surrounding him.

"Looks like your friends enjoyed your song, too." The woman giggled.

"I'm glad you guys liked it!" The boy said excitedly to the creatures, smiling.

The creatures made a variety of sounds, which both the boy and the woman understood.

"Again?" The boy asked, then looked to the woman. "Can I play it again, mama?"

"Of course you can." The woman smiled, getting up from the stump, which revealed that she was much taller than a normal adult. "I'm just going to check on something, okay? I'll be back before your song is over."

"Is it those flowers again?" The boy asked, curious.

"Smart as ever, sweetheart. Yes, I need to check on those flowers again." The woman smiled. "They've been having some issues lately. I'll be right back."

The boy waved to the woman as she walked through the bushes and trees, then began playing his violin again, this time for the little creatures. The creatures huddled together and listened as he played.

Sabre stops playing, having finished the song.

He looked up from his instrument, only to instantly feel flustered as he saw his friends staring at him in awe. The blobs were practically huddled up against him, they had gotten so close.

"That was amazing." M says after a best of silence, his face lit up with an astounded smile.

"And you said you weren't any good." Time teased, smiling as well.

"Shut uuup." Sabre groans, shrinking into his hoodie while he felt his face flush even more.

"What? You're really good at playing!" Time laughs. "Nothing to be embarrassed about!"

Sabre quickly placed the violin and bow back into the rosewood case, closing it and locking it once more as the blobs dispersed.

"He's right, Sabre." M says. "Why didn't you ever tell anyone you play a violin?"

"Because- Reasons." Sabre says quickly as he picks up the case.

"Alright, alright. I won't push it." M laughs.

"Want me to put it in your room for you?" Time asks. "I'm heading back up to finish cleaning, anyway."

"Yeah, sure. Thanks Time." Sabre says, handing him the case.

Time leaves the room, and Sabre sits back down on the couch, picking up his coffee. He and M sit in silence for a moment, until...

"M, you tell any of the other Leaders about this, and I swear-"

"I won't, chill."

"Good."
