Chapter 4

The Almost Confession

The week following their day at the park felt like a whirlwind for Emma. She was riding high on the excitement of her blossoming friendship with Ethan. They exchanged texts daily, filled with laughter and shared memes, and she found herself looking forward to seeing him at school more than anything else.

As Saturday approached, Emma's anticipation grew. They had planned to watch a movie at Ethan's house, and she could hardly contain her excitement. She spent the morning picking out the perfect outfit—something comfortable yet cute. After trying on several combinations, she settled on a soft sweater and her favorite jeans, feeling confident and cozy.

When she arrived at Ethan's house, the sun was beginning to set, casting a warm golden hue over everything. He greeted her at the door with that familiar smile that made her heart flutter.

"Hey, you made it!" Ethan said, stepping aside to let her in.

"Thanks for having me!" Emma replied, stepping into the cozy living room filled with the scent of popcorn.

They settled onto the couch, a bowl of popcorn between them, and started the movie. Emma tried to focus on the film, but her mind kept drifting to Ethan. He looked so relaxed, his dark hair slightly tousled, and she couldn't help but steal glances at him.

About halfway through the movie, Ethan paused it. "Hey, do you want to grab some drinks? I think we have soda in the fridge," he suggested, standing up.

"Sure! I'll help," Emma said, eager to keep the conversation flowing.

As they walked to the kitchen, Emma felt a wave of nervous energy. She could sense that something was different tonight; the air felt charged with unspoken words.

They rummaged through the fridge, Ethan retrieving two cans of soda.

"Here you go," he said, handing her one. Their fingers brushed, and Emma felt a jolt of electricity.

"Thanks!" she said, trying to keep her voice steady.

They returned to the couch, and as the movie resumed, Emma noticed Ethan glancing at her more often, his expression thoughtful. The tension in the air was palpable, and Emma felt her heart race.

"Hey, can I ask you something?" Ethan said suddenly, pausing the movie again.

"Sure! What's up?" Emma asked, her curiosity piqued.Ethan hesitated, his brow furrowing slightly. "I've just been thinking about... us. About how much fun we've been having together."

Emma's heart raced at the prospect of where this conversation might lead. "Yeah, I've really enjoyed hanging out with you too," she replied, trying to keep her tone light.

Ethan looked down, fiddling with the can in his hands. "I just... I feel like there's something special here, you know?" he said, his voice barely above a whisper.

Emma's breath caught in her throat.

Was he really about to confess?

She felt a rush of hope mixed with anxiety. "I feel that too," she said softly, her heart pounding.

But just as Ethan opened his mouth to speak, the doorbell rang, interrupting the moment. They both jumped, and Emma felt a rush of disappointment.

"Hang on, I'll get it," Ethan said, standing up and heading to the door.

Emma watched him go, her heart sinking. Why did timing always seem to betray them? As Ethan opened the door, Emma could hear the muffled voices of his younger siblings, who had come to join them.

"Hey, we're watching a movie! Can we join?" his little brother asked, peeking around Ethan's legs.

Ethan sighed but smiled at them. "Sure, just keep it down, okay?"

Emma felt her hopes deflate a little as Ethan returned to the couch, his siblings trailing behind him. They settled down on the floor, and the cozy atmosphere shifted as the movie continued. Ethan's focus was now divided, and Emma felt the moment slipping away.

As the credits rolled, Ethan turned to her, his expression a mix of frustration and longing. "I was trying to say something important earlier," he said, his voice low.

"Yeah? What was it?" Emma asked, leaning in, eager to hear what he had to say.

But before he could respond, his siblings started chattering about the movie, completely oblivious to the tension in the room. Emma felt a wave of frustration wash over her. It was as if fate was conspiring against them.

"Let's play a game!" Ethan's brother suggested, breaking the moment.

"Sure! What do you want to play?" Ethan replied, trying to sound enthusiastic, but Emma could see the disappointment in his eyes.

As they transitioned to a board game, Emma felt the magic of the evening fade. They played and laughed, but all Emma could think about was how close they had come to a confession. She wanted to tell him how she felt, but with his siblings around, the moment was lost.

After a few rounds of the game, Ethan's parents called them for dinner. They all migrated to the dining room, where a feast awaited—pizza, salad, and Ethan's mom's famous chocolate chip cookies.

As they ate, Emma tried to engage with Ethan's family, but her mind was elsewhere. She stole glances at Ethan, who was animatedly talking to his siblings, the earlier tension replaced by the warmth of family.

After dinner, they returned to the living room, and Ethan's siblings quickly lost interest in the game, retreating to their rooms. Emma felt a flicker of hope as they finally had some privacy again.

"Hey, I'm really glad you came over tonight," Ethan said, his tone sincere as they settled back onto the couch.

"Me too! I had a lot of fun," Emma replied, her heart racing again.

Ethan looked at her, his expression serious. "I really wanted to talk to you earlier... about how I feel."

Emma held her breath, willing him to continue. But just then, his phone buzzed on the coffee table, interrupting the moment. Ethan glanced at it, his expression shifting.

"Sorry, I just need to check this," he said, picking up his phone.

Emma felt a pang of disappointment. "Of course," she said, trying to mask her frustration.

As Ethan read the message, Emma could see the tension return to his shoulders.

"It's just my friends making plans for tomorrow night. They want me to join them," he said, sounding conflicted.

"Go if you want! I don't want to keep you from seeing your friends," Emma said, trying to sound nonchalant, but inside, she felt a twinge of sadness.

"I don't know... I really enjoy spending time with you," Ethan replied, his gaze meeting hers.

"Then stay! We can hang out more," Emma suggested, hoping to keep the evening going.

Ethan hesitated, clearly torn. "I just... I wanted to talk to you about something important. But now it feels like everything is getting in the way," he said, running a hand through his hair in frustration.

Emma felt her heart race. "What did you want to say?" she urged, leaning closer. But just then, his phone buzzed again, and he sighed, glancing at it. "It's my friends again. I should probably let them know," he said reluctantly.

"Okay," Emma said, feeling a mix of disappointment and understanding. "I get it."

Ethan stood up, pacing slightly as he typed out a response. Emma watched him, her heart heavy.

Why was it so hard for him to just say what he felt?

After a moment, he turned back to her, his expression serious. "Emma, I really... I just... I need to find the right moment to say it," he admitted, his voice earnest.

Emma felt a rush of hope but also frustration. "You don't have to wait for the perfect moment. Just say it," she encouraged, wanting him to be open with her.

"I know, but it's just... I want it to be...," he said, his eyes searching hers. Emma nodded, understanding where he was coming from. "I get that, but sometimes the best moments are the ones that happen unexpectedly."

Ethan smiled softly, his gaze lingering on her. "You're right. I just don't want to mess it up."

"You won't mess it up," Emma said, feeling a surge of confidence. "Just be honest with me."

Just then, the door swung open, and Ethan's mom walked in. "Hey, you two! We're going to watch a movie together as a family. Want to join?" she asked, beaming.

Ethan looked at Emma, his expression torn. "I think I should go," he said, glancing back at his mom.

Emma felt a wave of disappointment wash over her again. "Yeah, of course. Family time is important," she said, forcing a smile.

"Let's hang out again soon, okay? I promise we'll talk more," Ethan said, his eyes sincere.

"Definitely," Emma replied, trying to hide her frustration.

As Ethan joined his family, Emma felt a mix of emotions swirl within her. She had hoped for a confession, a moment of clarity that would solidify what they both felt. But instead, they had been interrupted, and the moment slipped away once again. As she left Ethan's house, Emma felt both hopeful and frustrated. She knew they had something special, but the timing just never seemed right.

Driving home, she replayed the evening in her mind, wishing things had gone differently. But deep down, she knew that their connection was real. She just had to be patient and trust that the right moment would come.
