Chapter Four - Ruminations
After dealing with the bandits, Summer and Lord Scourge continued their journey. When night fell, Summer and Scourge made camp away from the roads. As they made camp, Summer took a moment to ponder Scourge. There was still much of Scourge she did not understand. As she pondered all of this, Scourge spoke.
Scourge: Sleep, Huntress. You will need your strength.
Summer: What about you?
Scourge: My strength is none of your concern.
At this point, Summer became even more curious about Scourge. Eventually, Summer eventually approached Scourge and attempts to speak to him. The first thing was about the Grimm.
Summer: Do you think the Grimm will pose a problem?
Scourge: The Grimm will be a nuisance, but something that can be overcome. Still, I can't help but feel a sense of admiration towards these creatures.
Summer: What do you mean?
Scourge: From what I know, these creatures are drawn to negative emotions like a moth to an open flame.
Summer: They are creatures of darkness. Creatures of evil.
Scourge: These creatures are not bound by conventional morals. They are animals doing what comes naturally. When they kill, do we fault them for following their nature?
Summer was taken aback by Scourge's fascination with the Grimm. She had never heard anyone express such thoughts before. A part of her wondered how much of the truth about the Grimm he knew. If he did, Scourge did a good job of hiding it. She soon thought of Scourge's penchant for violence.
Summer: Did you enjoy killing those bandits, Scourge?
Scourge: Does it matter if I did?
Summer: Of course it does. Killing in self defense is one thing, but taking joy in killing.....
Scourge: If you must know, I do not take joy in killing. I do not revel in the suffering of my enemies. I kill out of necessity. And in this world, the strong rule over the weak.
As Scourge said that, it was clear to Summer that Scourge's penchant for violence was paired with a survival of the fittest mindset. Summer was quick to counter Scourge's argument.
Summer: It's the role of the strong to protect the weak.
Scourge: A naive sentiment, Huntress. There are times when you must have the will to do what is necessary. Morals are nothing if they hold you back.
Summer: And what made you come to that conclusion?
As Summer asked that, Scourge paused as a chuckle escaped his lips. Summer reminded him too well of the Jedi he worked alongside with. Like the Jedi, Summer appeared as a beacon of light and hope. But Summer's question piqued the Sith Lord's question.
Scourge: Peace is a lie. There is only passion. Through passion, I gain strength. Through strength, I gain power. Through power, I gain victory. Through victory, my chains are broken.
Summer was taken aback by the words spoken by Scourge and how he spoke with unwavering conviction. As for Scourge, he studied her reactions. Shock over the Sith Code was a natural response to those who knew nothing of the ways of the Sith.
Scourge: You fascinate me, Summer Rose. You are unlike any of the other Huntsmen I have encountered.
Summer: You've encountered other Huntsmen?
Scourge: I have. Though many have gotten themselves killed needlessly. You however despite your....naivete, are competent in your abilities and have great skill. Still, you have much to learn.
Summer: Thank you....I guess. You've been....interesting company to say the least.
Scourge: Indeed. But I hope you understand that this journey will take us to the dark corners of your world. And there will be times when you will be asked to make a difficult choice. When that time comes, will you have the strength to do what is necessary? Or will you falter and end up like all the other foolish Huntsmen I have come across?
Summer: You seem almost certain of what lies ahead.
Scourge: One does not need clairvoyance to sense the changing of the tides. You know this as well. Whoever sent you to seek this temple knows this as well.
The more Scourge spoke, the more apparent it was that Scourge knew more than he was letting on. Summer attempts to get an answer out of him.
Summer: You once told me that you were brought here for a reason. What reason do you speak of?
Scourge: That remains to be seen, Summer Rose. The answer to that question eludes me even as we speak just as they elude yours. But once we find this temple, I'm sure we'll find the answers we both seek, for better or worse.
At this point, Summer could see that Scourge had no intention of answering her questions. But she at least piqued his interest. And that would hopefully eventually lead to him revealing his true intentions to her as well as more information about himself and where he came from.
Scourge: We have spoken enough for now, Huntress. I suggest you rest. It will be a long trek tomorrow. You will need all your strength.
With that, Summer turned in for the night, growing ever more curious about the Sith Lord and his intentions. As for Scourge, his respect for Summer Rose continues to grow. For now, the alliance between Lord Scourge and Summer Rose would remain as strong as it can be. But the coming days on their journey will further test the strength and conviction of their alliance and whether it will remain strong or fall apart.
