Chapter 47

Puck's POV:

I searched through the drawers in the kitchen after not finding anything upstairs, knowing full well that Jake loved to hide his magic items alongside regular things, so it was harder to tell them apart.

I opened another drawer, riffling through it and not finding anything. I shut it closed and groaned, dropping my head onto the kitchen counter. Nothing.

As soon as I'd thought that, an idea came to my mind. It was a crazy, dangerous idea. But it was time...to face Henry and Veronica's room.

***

I tapped my fingers against my legs nervously as I shut the door behind me. This was probably the most dangerous thing I'd ever done, but who would Jake trust more than anyone with at least a few of his magic items?

I took a deep breath and moved forward, eyes fixed on the bedside table because it had a small box sitting on it.

I reached it and quietly lifted the top open, glancing behind me nervously to check if someone was coming.

Just as I'd thought, the box was filled with simple jewelry, all organized neatly. Perfect.

I searched through it carefully, looking for anything that might stand out. Just as I'd started to give up, something caught my eye.

A ring. It was a thin silver band with a blue-violet jewel set into it. The jewel shimmered slightly.

"Hey, Sabrina?" I called, trying to keep my voice low, but loud enough that she could still hear me.

"Yeah?" she asked, from somewhere downstairs.

"Remember that case we had a while ago? The one with the magic ring?"

"Yes!" she exclaimed. "That would be perfect!"

I grinned. "Good," I said to myself quietly, and took the ring, closing the box, and turning around, just to see the door opening.

Well shit.

Veronica walked in, then stopped short after seeing me. "Uh, what are you doing here, Puck?"

I scratched the back of my neck. "Um...looking for the bathroom?"

She shook her head. "Right. Totally. I'm not going to ask, but you'd better get out right now."

"Yes, ma'am," I said quickly, saluting her on my way out. I ran down the stairs immediately, heart racing.

"You got it?" Sabrina asked, oblivious to how terrified I was.

"Yeah." I nodded, holding it out to her.

"Why are your hands shaking?" she asked.

I realized they were and gave her a sheepish smile. "Uh...Your mom walked into the room after I took it."

She covered her mouth to hide her laughter.

I looked at her in disappointment. "You should be sympathetic."

"Wow," Pin muttered from off to the side, "he used a big word."

I decided to ignore that comment.

"Mom's fine, though," Sabrina pointed out. "Dad's something else, but she's fine."

I rolled my eyes. "Whatever. Your parents are still scary."

"Right."

"It's true," Pin put in.

"Why would you care?" Sabrina asked, slightly rudely.

Pin shrugged.

I grinned. "'Cause he likes marshmallow, obviously."

"That's not—what?" Pin spluttered. "Not true!"

"Be honest," I chided him. "It's an important virtue to have."

"That you do not—don't—have," he shot back.

I put a hand to my heart in mock offense. "How could you say something like that to me?"

Sabrina stepped between us. "Okay, enough."

I rolled my eyes. "Okay, whatever. What time are we leaving?"

"I'm thinking in maybe two hours?"

"Sounds like a plan."

"What do we do while we wait?" she wondered.

"Sleep," Pin declared, flopping onto the couch. "It's 4:30 AM. I am sleeping, no matter what you say. I need more sleep."

Sabrina shrugged. "Sure. Im going to sleep too."

"I'm not tired," I complained, which was a lie, but I had to be strong.

"Then wake us up at 6:30, okay?"

"Okay." I sat down on the steps, taking Sabrina's phone from her back pocket as she climbed the stairs.

She scowled at me but let me keep it. For now.

***

"Wake up," I said, shaking Pin's shoulder. Sabrina was standing next to me, and she rolled her eyes. "It's easy. Like this." She demonstrated, smacking him upside the head.

Pin started awake, looking disoriented. "What?" he asked.

"We should go now, before my parents come," Sabrina said.

Pin nodded and took the ring from Sabrina's hand and looked at it while rubbing the sleep out of his eyes. "So how does it work?"

I looked to Sabrina. She shrugged.

"We should all hold hands, right?" I asked. "Like light-leaping."

"Light-what?" Pin asked.

Sabrina and I exchanged looks, remembering our visit to the Lost Cities. She still had that selfie on her phone.

"Nothing," she said, smiling a little. "But yeah, we should probably hold hands."

We all linked hands. Sabrina was in the middle, so she put on the ring.

"Now what?" I asked uncertainly.

"Um, say the place we want to go to?" Pin wondered.

"New York, West Levione Door!" Sabrina exclaimed.

Nothing happened.

"It's not working—" I started to say, moments before we all let out a shout of surprise as we dropped through the floor.

***

"Woah...!" was all I could manage before I hit the cement ground face-first.

I groaned and rolled over, bringing my hands up to cover my face. I did not like this mode of teleportation.

Wait.

I didn't even know if it worked!

I sat up, ignoring the painful aching in my shoulders and back, and looked around.

It had worked, all right.

And there were people staring at me. It looked like I interrupted their filming of some movie.

I realized I was in the middle of the sidewalk, and quickly sprang to my feet. "Sorry," I told them, laughing awkwardly. "Uh...carry on."

A few of them rolled their eyes and muttered some rude things, but the others looked at me in wonder, then glanced up at the sky. Probably wondering where I'd come from.

I was still dizzy, and I kept my hands at my temples as I stumbled away from them, trying to find Sabrina and Pin.

They must've gone somewhere else, I thought. It looked like those people were filming something, maybe a documentary on the Levione Door, which—I glanced at the massive structure that was behind me by now—by the way, is awesome.

I wandered around the streets for a while, growing increasingly more worried when I didn't find them, but I finally caught sight of something that Sabrina would definitely go to.

The Fandom Café.

I laughed a little to myself and ran across the street, completely forgetting about the cars. I managed to avoid them, with a few angry car horns blaring at me.

I jumped slightly in place when I got to the glass door of the café, then opened it. A bell rang as it opened, and I looked around for Pin and Sabrina.

I found them immediately, sitting in a corner decorated with Harry Potter pillows and posters.

Pin was reading a book, and Sabrina was looking immensely satisfied with herself as she read the third Harry Potter book, drank a glass of Dr Pepper, and ate a bag of...

"Are those what I think they are?" I asked, sighing internally as I walked up to their table.

Sabrina looked up from her book and grinned widely. "Yup!"

Pin, too, glanced up from his book and sighed. "She has been going on and on about them since we got here."

Sabrina smiled happily. "They're as amazing as Seven says they are."

I rolled my eyes. "Honey Buddha Chips don't exist. Neither does Seven."

Her expression grew serious. "Need I remind you what happened last time you insulted one of my fictional boyfriends?"

"But aren't I your actual—"

"I'm still allowed to have fictional boyfriends," she said seriously.

"You make no sense." I sighed out loud and sat down next to her. "So you guys got here before me?"

Pin nodded. "We landed right in the middle of some people filming a documentary or something, and then we looked for you. But we could not—couldn't—find you, so we decided we would go somewhere we knew you would find us."

"And we picked the best spot!" Sabrina exclaimed. "They have, like, every fandom here! And if you put in these special earphones"—she showed me a pair of black earbuds—"you can hear what's going on on the screens."

I looked around, and saw that she was right. There were many screens around the room, all of them high up on the walls. We were sitting right across from one that was playing a Panic! At The Disco music video.

Sabrina grinned again as if she'd achieved all her life goals.

"Okay," I said, turning back to the table, "what's the plan to get into the door without the documenters—is that what you call them?—noticing?"

Pin and Sabrina looked at each other, then back to me. They shrugged.
