Chapter 49
Rocco spent most of Saturday morning trying to explain to Gavin that yes, he saw Auntie Dani but that he couldn't tell anyone. He felt rotten for making his son lie, but soon, he had to end this soon so he could make it okay, for all of them.
He couldn't wipe the smile off his face. Nothing felt better than having Dani in his arms all night. After so much longing for her, he had her for a few brief hours, and it was everything.
He no longer cared what Dante had to say, he was going to find a way to make his family work, and his family was Dani and Gavin. Even if he lost everything but Dante's share, that was fine so long as they could be together.
As he got Gavin settled in for a late afternoon nap, Rocco curled in with him; he snapped a photo of the two of them and then sent it to Dani with the caption, wish you were here, like literally right here.
Dante would kill him for that too, but he didn't care anymore.
He was tired of forcing the three of them to suffer; he knew Alyssa would rather take the money than go through a big court battle; he just had to offer a high enough price. He'd make sure it didn't affect Dante's share, but he was done.
Some fights were worth it, and some weren't. Fighting Alyssa for his fortune or fighting for a future with Dani. The choice was obvious as day.
Jeanie agreed to stay with Gavin, and Rocco headed to the firm to tell Dante what he had planned, whether he liked it or not.
He saw that both Dante and Alana's cars were parked and found that odd; as he headed up, he heard noise from the conference room and walked in.
Dante and Alana both jumped when he walked in, but his eyes went to the screen, showing a view of his living room at the house.
"What?"
Dani walked into the frame and looked nervous, wearing one of Alyssa's tiny white dresses.
"...is going on?" Rocco demanded.
"Just stay calm, Rocco. It was her plan," Dante said as Alana got up, shut the door, and placed her body in front of it.
"Why are you what?"
A knock at the door from the screen got Rocco's attention, and he turned to see Dani letting someone in.
"Well, hello, Little Lamb,' Eddy's voice filled the room.
"What is she doing?" Rocco demanded. "Move, Alana."
"Just wait, Rocco, no," Dante urged.
"She said she can handle this," Alana assured him. "Lexi is right outside the house."
"Come on in, Eddy; I'm glad you came," Dani said shyly.
"I was surprised you called," he kept getting closer and closer to her, circling her life like a shark circling its prey.
Fuck, Rocco had heard quite a bit about him from Jeanie apparently he was living at the apartment all this time. Dani was not safe around that guy!
"Move! I'm getting her out of there." Rocco demanded, but Dante came to hold him back.
**
Dani focused hard on staying calm and one step ahead of Eddy; she only needed to keep him here long enough for Alyssa to walk in. She knew he was suspicious about why she'd have called him from the house phone as she did, but he was still curious enough to come.
"I, um, Alyssa slipped me drugs last night," she said, and he looked stunned.
"Now, why would she go and do that?" he asked as he ran a hand through his shaggy hair. "You must be mistaken."
"I'm not. Becks told me she did it."
His eyes darkened, and a vein in his forehead popped as he gulped back obvious anger. "Did she now?"
As she thought Rebecca was the weak link, the most likely to talk. That was everything Dani needed to know. She felt her confidence growing.
"She put me in a cab and sent me home, but how could I go home when Lys drugged me?" Dani confirmed. "But I went to Rocco's instead."
"You did?" he looked happy to hear that as his eyes twinkled. "I don't blame you, Ali has been a terrible sister to you, when she should have taken you under her wing. I could have brought you in with her!"
She could see he thought he was working her now and sniffled and nodded, allowing him to think that.
"What happened with Rocco, little lamb?"
"He sent me away." She remembered how she felt when he did try and send her away and let out a sob.
"Oh, dear." His tone was heavy on the fake sympathy as he brought her to the couch and sat her down. "You have had your small-town heart crushed, is that it?"
"It's all her fault," Dani sobbed. "Lys. She did something; she's been trying to tear us apart for weeks. I know it."
"Stupid, stupid girl. I told her it was a dumb plan."
"What?"
"Never mind that," he kept getting closer and her hair was standing on end. "Why did you call me?"
"Because she doesn't deserve Rocco, and she doesn't deserve you either," Dani cried out. "Take me instead. I'd be a better model than her. I want to see her face when I am."
He let out a low chuckle. "You are just like your mom and your sister, aren't you?" He roughly grabbed her chin, tilting her head to meet his eyes. "What's your game, little one?"
"No game. I just want to beat her at her own thing."
He lowered his face closer to her, his hot breath heating her cheeks and sending a chill down her spine. "Why should I believe that? I think you may need to prove yourself. Are you prepared to do that?"
She felt herself tremble nervously, she wanted to spit in his face, and as he lowered his lips to hers, she cringed, and then the door flew open.
"The hell Eddy! Off my sister!" Alyssa screamed as Dani leaped off the couch in a hurry. "I put up with a lot from, you, not this, you son of a bitch!"
"She called me here. She came on to me!" Eddy defended vehemently. "I was attempting to call her bluff, is all."
"Calling her bluff with a hardon?" Her eyes zeroed in on it as he attempted to cover it, and all Dani wanted to do was throw up.
She then turned to Dani. "I knew you were just like Katherine. First, my husband and then Eddy?"
"You're right, I am," Dani said as she stood taller. "When Rocco left you, and you were all happy. I realized you didn't care that he was gone. I came here to get revenge, so that wouldn't do."
"I knew it," Alyssa hissed as Eddy shook his head.
"She's lying'."
"Shut up, Eddy!" Alyssa screamed.
"I figured out Eddy wasn't gay as soon as he started looking at me the way he does and the way Rocco did," Dani moved closer, using Alyssa's haughty tone on her. "It didn't take much effort. I followed you a few times and realized you were spending nights with him. Becks admitted it's been going on for years."
"That little..." Eddy sputtered. "I'll kill her!"
"So, you decided to try and take Eddy from me instead! To hurt me." Alyssa gasped as she began to pace around. "No, that can't be right, you're all miss goody gum drops and-"
"Eddy needs a fresh model," Dani said flippantly.
"You're lying," Alyssa had a shadow of doubt across her face even as she spoke.
"I was calling her bluff, Ali-baby. I swear I'd never replace you," Edward dropped to his knees before Alyssa. "You know how much I love you. Did I not just show you last night?"
"Stop," Alyssa said as her eyes fell on Dani's smug face. "Eddy, stop."
"I will kill Rebecca for this! She's been sabotaging us every step of the way!" Edward stood and started for the door.
"Eddy I said stop talking," Alyssa looked frantically from Dani to Eddy.
"She won't ruin us, and neither will your sister," Eddy continued his tirade. "You deal with her, I'm looking for Rebecca!"
"I said stop talking," Alyssa's words were far too late as Eddy raced out the door in a rage.
"I think we have enough." Dani picked up the Kiki replica from the end table that Dante had set it up on earlier.
"Yeah, we do!" Lexi burst into the house with a big grin, holding her phone, and Alyssa started for it. "It doesn't matter. Dante is streaming it to the conference room, too."
"You lied," Alyssa stared at Dani blankly. "You tricked me into talking."
"Of course, I lied. I'm not like you!" Dani said hotly.
"This little stunt was exactly like something I would do," Alyssa argued.
"Maybe, but after you drugged me, I had no choice but to take a page from your book."
"Why? Why would you bother?" Alyssa started to circle as her eyes narrowed. "You'll get Rocco when it's all said and done either way, right? Do you do want him rich, is that it?"
"No. I don't think he deserves to have his father's entire legacy and Gavin's ripped away because you're selfish," Dani shot back. "As much as this was for Rocco, it was mostly for Gavin, Alyssa. I came here because I was desperate, but I stayed for my nephew. I think of him first in all of this chaos, and so does Rocco, do you?"
"I-"
"Obviously not if you're drugging his nanny at clubs," Lexi said, earning Alyssa's glare. "Come on, Dani. Let's go."
"It's over for you. Dante has all the proof he needs," Dani said. "So now you have one last chance, to end this without court and save everyone from that ugly mess, yourself too."
With that, she followed Lexi out to her car.
