Chapter 5
Knowing that the kids heard the yelling I leave too. I find myself in the middle of a forest. I smile and take a deep breath. I love the smell of the woods, it helps me think.
I realize that Jack said the others made him swear not to tell, about what happened that day. Knowing that Sandman won't talk I go to North.
"NORTH WHERE ARE YOU?" I scream into the large workshop.
About two minutes later North walks out from behind a corner, a toy in hand and sleeves rolled up revealing his 'Naughty' and 'Nice' tattoos. "Siren just the guardian I wanted to see, follow me," confused I go after him.
He brings me to a room and asks me if I want some fruit cake, I turn him down. He shrugs and suddenly gets dark, "what's your center?"
"What?" I question.
He puts his hand beside my head, on the wall, I'm leaning on "what's your center, Siren?"
"I don't know," I state bluntly.
"What do you think I do here?" his thick accent reaching my ears, I get even more confused.
"Why does that matter?" he goes and sits down in his chair.
"Just answer the question." he says light heartedly
I blow air out of my mouth and say "I think you sit there in your chair while the yetties do all the work, and you fix everything that the elfs do wrong."
He laughs "no that's not what I do, I protect the children's wonder. I help make toys, and only the best behaved kids get, the ones I make. What do you protect in this world Siren," he raises an eyebrow.
"How am I supposed to know," I catch a glimpse of something interesting out the corner of my eye, there was a random block of ice on his desk, I raise an eyebrow. "What's that?" I question pointing to the block of ice.
He looks at it and the smile rises on his face again, "that is what I make my toys out of," he walks behind his desk.
"You make toys out of ice?" I inquire. He nods "does it turn into wood or something after?" he smiles.
"That's the fun part, come here," he makes a gesture to go over to him, so I make my way beside him. He gives me tools and says "make something."
I look at him with my eyebrow raised, "what?" he repeats himself. "Why would I make something?"
He looks at me then to the block of ice in front of me "do you want to see how this works or not?" I shrug my shoulders and think of what I'm going to make "don't think just carve," North says. So I do what he says and I put the carving tools to the ice.
It's been at least three hours, and my mind wanders a lot, but I finished what I was trying to make. North puts his hands on the object and it slowly goes from ice to wood. He hands it to me "fly it," I can tell he's questioning why I made a plane. I smile, throw it and it flys. It goes around the room a couple of times before the left jet engine lights up in reddish-orange, and it falls off. The plane then heads towards the ground, and explodes, on impact. North looks at me and I walk over to the plane. The plane is fine and the engine is back on. When I hold it up the look on Norths face darkens. "Why did you make this?" I made a plane with a broken jet engine.
"It's the one thing that I've always questioned, what happened that day, that's actually why I'm here I know that there was a fight between the guardians and Pitch in June five years ago. What happened?"
"That's why you wanted to know where Jack was," he mumbles. "What did he tell you?"
"Nothing and that's the problem, I need to know what happened," I try and reason with the man in red.
"The others and I have sworn to never talk about that, I liked bonding with you but I can't tell you anything."
"Can't, or won't," I say as I flip an arrow out.
He goes to speak but I'm already gone. Back in the forest. I think on who to go to next. Tooth.
When I get there, Tooth is talking to a bunch of smaller fairies. "Hey," I smile at her. She looks at me.
"Siren! Hey. How's it going?" she flys up to me with some of the smaller fairies flowling her.
"It's going good, but I have to ask you something," I already know how this is going to go.
"Sure ask away," she beams at me.
I look down and sigh. Right before I ask something sparkles in the corner of my eye. I glance at it to find one of the memory tube things have came out and a tooth is being placed in it. "Wow," I whisper. "How do you do this everyday? All alone, except for the baby fairies?" I question, distracted.
She looks down "it's not easy but I manage, I talk to the others so it's not that bad. You see all of this, Siren? You helped keep it this way, when Pitch came to grab my farries again, you didn't know what was going on but you helped by getting rid of the nightmares. You freed most of my farries, Pitch still got some but not as much as last time. So thank you, you saved a lot of memories," she looks me dead in the eye.
"I was just following what you guys were doing," I say quickly.
She smiles at me, "let me show you something," she flys off and I follow "when I first saw you I knew I recognized you," she goes to a different room filled with the cylinders of teeth "the one I never got to finish," she picks one up off the desk in the corner and hands it to me "this is yours, is it not?" I look at the end, where the picture is. It's my face. These are my teeth. My memories. So I nod "this is where I keep all the teeth of those who have died, and I keep the ones who can't be finished on the desk."
I look at the desk and it has one other cylinder on it. "Who does that one to belong to?"
She turns and picks it up "someone who was never alive inside, his name was Kozmotis," she stares at the end of the tube "we can die you know," she turns to me. "I'm surprised you aren't dead from what Pitch had one of the fearlings do to you. How are you alive?" the question comes out as more as she's demanding to know not just wanting to know.
"I know how to heal, almost everything, what I had was basically a flesh wound. The only thing I can't heal is the brain. I mean I can heal it physically, but I can't help with everything that was lost, like the memories and the functions that they no longer know how to do," I start to tear up, remembering the person who needed me to have that skill.
"How do you know how to do that?" she flys closer.
"Practice makes perfect," I joke. "All I have to do is feel a strong emotion, like sadness or remorse. If I try to heal anything with something like anger or hatefulness, I do more harm," I correct.
"You looked so sad when you were telling me that you can't heal the brain, how did you figure that out?" she wipes one of the stray tears off my cheek.
"Someone I knew got shot. Seven times, in the head. When I tried to heal them, the brain healed but time showed that they lost the function to speak, eat properly and they lost a lot of memories," the tears fall quickly down my face "they didn't remember who I was when my mother showed them a picture, they didn't know who their family was. They remember bits and pieces now, and they can talk for the most part. But they still don't have a clue on who I am. It breaks my heart, but I know I can't do anything," I take a deep breath so I don't fall to the ground, sobbing.
"If you let me know who they are I might be able to bring their memories back," her eyes held sorrow.
"His name was David, I look a lot like him, and he's my father, so I don't think that you can bring me back if I'm not in his childhood," the tears stop as I take more deep breaths.
She smiles at me "you'll be surprised at what I can do. Wait here," she flys out and comes back seconds later holding another golden cilinder. "I believe that this is your father's," she places it in front of me.
I grab it and look at the end, that's my dad alright. "This can bring his memory back?" I ask hopeful.
She nods "let's find him, and we'll test this out," I nod back.
"I know the fastest way to him," I grab Tooths hand, and go to my dad.
He's sitting at the table with my brother and mom, at his side, "so you're my wife and son, why do I remember someone else?" the hope in me sparks again, as he says this. "I remember a girl, she must be a young version of you," he points to my mother.
I quickly turn to Tooth, "how do you do this?" I hold up my dad's, baby teeth. She presses the middle of it and I quickly look back at my dad.
He's gone from confused to staring blankly at the wall. A minute later, he blinks about five times. I hear him mumble something but I don't quite understand what he said. Tears run down his face, and I hear what he says this time "I've lost my baby girl, she's gone," he sobs. My mom and brother run up to him worried. "I remember everything, I remember her. But she's gone, I didn't even get to say goodbye." he puts his head in his hands "I'm sorry baby girl, I'm so sorry," I realize that was so fucking selfish of me, I just wanted my father to remember me. I never thought about how he would feel about having a daughter, that died. About never being able to see his daughter again.
I walk over to him with tears welling up in my eyes, "I'm so sorry dad, I should have never done this," I whisper, and kiss him on the head. When I do he stops crying and looks at where I am standing, he blinks a couple times, and turns back to my family.
"She wouldn't want me to cry over her, she was strong, she didn't have all the friends in the world but she had what she needed," he says as if trying to convince himself. "She would have wanted me to be strong and confident, to go on without crying over her."
I look over at Tooth "what happened? When I kissed his head, he went from a blubbering mess, to saying a speech that he could have said at my funeral," I say confused.
She looks shocked "I don't know, nothing like this has ever happened before, but to be honest I've never done this before," she smiles shyly.
I look at her "so this was on a hunch that you could do it?" she nods "well god job at that," I chuckle. I look back at my dad. He's stopped giving his 'speech' and is watching tv with tears staining his cheeks. I take a deep breath and take an arrow out of my quiver. "Thank you, but we should leave. They might want to be alone."
Once we get to our destination, I've come close to breaking down in tears. Tooth hugs me. "It's better that he remembers you, so he can mourn your death, instead of not knowing about you, it's for the best. Now why did you come to me, I know that you didn't plan this."
She knows me too well "I want to know what happened between Pitch in June, five years ago, around Germany" she looks shocked.
"How did you find out about that? No one should know about that, but us!"
I've had enough of this "I know because I fucking died that day! I know a plane went down okay! I WAS ON THAT FUCKING PLANE!" I take a deep breath. "You know what if you're not going to tell me I'll go somewhere else," I jab my arrow into the ground and go to the forest, I breath in the air and calm my nerves before seeing Bunnymund.
When I get there I see a lot of fucking colors, pink, blue, green, yellow. If it's a color, it was there. I walk around wanting to see if there was a place here without color. From what I've seen. The answer would be no, everywhere here has, at least several pounds of color. I find a tall tree, with the person bunny, I'm looking for fast asleep, underneath it. I take a quick picture of him, because he looks so peaceful. Right as I'm about to wake him he speaks, without opening his eyes, "whatcha doin?"
I jump a little "I thought you were sleeping sorry."
He sighs and gets up "I didn't ask what you were thinkin', I asked what you were doin'," he starts to walk toward me.
I shrug "to be honest, I don't know what I'm doing anymore," I say not wanting to say that I took a picture of him 'sleeping'.
"Why not?" he asks.
I think for about a minute "I.. have no clue where I'm going with my 'life.' I always thought that when I died I would go someplace where there are no questions left to answer, where I could let my guard down, but I guess that's not for me." right as he stops in front of me, I walk to the tree he was up against. "But I'm here for a different reason, June sixth, twenty thirteen," when I say the date his ears fall, in sadness. "What happened?"
"That's none of your business mate, it happened five years ago, it's not relevant now," he starts to hop away.
"Wait!" he stops "it's relevant, to me, so answer the question, what happened on that day, I can tell you feel remorse, so what happened?"
He turns and faces me, "why do you want to know?"
"Please, it's important, I just need to know," he steps closer to me, "I'll tell you why, after you tell me what happened."
He shakes his head "I'm sorry, I can't," and with that he leaves.
I scream in frustration, and remember that one more person was there that night. I go to the forest and I pull out my phone and look at the dot. Pennsylvania. I ram my arrow in the ground.
I appear in the middle of a forest, next to a hole in the ground. I shrug and jump down, expecting it to not be that far down.
Once I land, I investigate, with my bow drawn. Suddenly I hear a voice behind me, "come to make an alliance?"
I turn around, with my arrow pointed at him "no, I'm not here to make an alliance. I'm here to know where you were five years ago."
Pitch walks closer to me "now why would you want to know that?"
"It's personal, now are you going to tell me? Or are we gonna have to do this the hard way?" I ask as I pull my bow tighter.
"I'll answer your question if you join me," deceit leaking from his voice.
I hesitate, I know I shouldn't but I have to know if he's the reason why I'm dead "Fine, I'll join you. Now tell me."
"I was just outside of Germany collecting nightmares, until the guardians came and interrupted me, a pane went down, is that what you wanted to know, partner?" he smiles.
I lower my bow "yes. That's what I wanted to know. I have to go, but I'll be back," I stab an arrow in the ground and go back home to Elijah.
I look at his sleeping form, only to find black sand over his head, that's replaying my death. I start to panic, and look outside to see golden sand going into different windows. I jump out of Eli's window and scream "SANDMAN!!" I don't see anything for a minute "SANDMAN! I NEED YOUR HELP!" in the next few seconds he comes around a house on a cloud of sand "thank god, Sandman please help Eli, Pitch got to him," he nods and I follow him inside. The nightmare has escalated, he sees me fighting Pitch and getting stabbed, afterwards they cut off my head, blood spilling out of my head cavity as if I was a faucet. Sandman touches the nightmare and it turns into a dream. My head is back on and the one that was chopped off turns into a bowling ball. The scene changes to the last time I went with Eli bowling. I turn to sandman "thank you, you have no idea, how much this means to me," he nods, looking me in the eye. His widen and he backs up. A yellow pitch appears above his head with a question mark following. Playing dumb I say "we can take care of Pitch tomorrow," he shakes his head. Next above his head is me and Pitch, together. "What? God no! I would never join Pitch. Why would you think that?" Sandman grabs my hand and brings me to the bathroom. I glance at the mirror and gasp. My eyes have gone from the light blue to midnight black and getting darker, the veins in my face are showing up with the blue getting darker and darker and my hair turning dark brown that's slowly turning black. I turn to Sandman "I'm sorry," tears welling up in my black eyes, "I had to know something and this was the only way, please don't tell the others." he shakes his head again. "Please Sandman," the tears slowly fall. He makes a ball out of sand and tosses it to me. I catch it and it becomes black sand. Sandman leaves as quickly as he can. I break down on the ground crying.
After five minutes of crying I stand and go back to my old home. The one I had before I died.
My mom is sleeping on the couch with an empty glass of wine in her hand. I laugh, sadly, take the glass, put it on the table, and cover her with a blanket. I open my brothers door to see his bed with no one in it. Confused I look around a little, nope he's not here. I open my old bedroom door to find him there cuddling my blanket. Other than that my room is how I left it before I left for that goddamn trip, everything strewn everywhere in my rush to get to the airport. I go to reach for the blanket only to find him awake mumbling with tears running down his face. I gasp, sit down on the end of the bed and put my hand on his shoulder to comfort him. Over the years I found out that with strong emotion I can put my hands on people who don't believe in me, on the other hand they can't touch me. He shoots up and looks at where I'm sitting. I look at the calendar on my door to see someone has been keeping up with it. Five years later and they still use money on me. I look at the date. Exactly five years ago was the day I died. I jump in surprise when a hand goes through me.
I hear a soft voice "Meagan?" I sigh, knowing he can't see me. "Meagan if you're there please let me know," he begs. I look around the room to find another blanket for when I was cold. Jarod sighs and lays back down. I grab the blanket and throw it over him. He sits up and looks around. He closes his eyes and whispers something along the lines of 'please be here,' he opens his eyes and they instantly fill with tears. "You're here," he smiles and jumps into my arms. Shocked, I sit there wondering what just happened. He let's me go and puts his hands on my shoulders. "How are you here? How long can you stay? If you leave will you ever come back?" he starts firing questions at me.
"Slow down J," I laugh, "I'm here because... well I don't know," I shrug "I can only stay for tonight," I smile sadly at him. "I might to check up on you now and again," I think about my appearance "why are you not scared of me?"
"You're my sister what's to be scared of? Just 'cause you look different doesn't mean anything. I mean it would be scary if you looked exactly the same as when you died. Plus I kinda like your new look. Other than the eyes, don't get me wrong they're cool and all, but just all black and lifeless," he shudders.
I laugh "well I don't usually look like this," my smile fades. "I've done a really bad thing, I made a deal with the wrong person," I tell my brother.
He smiles at me "we all make mistakes, so it's okay. But just learn from that mistake don't do it again, and don't trust that person."
I smile sadly at him "I love you, I hope you know that, I won't let anything happen to you."
He looks me in the eye "I know you can't do that, you have better things to do then watch over me all the time. I love you too but you might want to go find what you came for," he smiles. I nod and walk out of my room. I go to my mom and dads bathroom I grab my moms makeup kit and leave the house. I go into the middle of the forest and drop it there. I find the nearest store, grab a mirror and coloured contacts.
When I get back to where I dropped the makeup, the sun is rising. I look in the mirror and start to change the black on my face back to my regular skin color. Once I'm done I put the contacts in. I almost look like myself again. Everything is back to normal but my hair. It's still black but it's too late to change it. I return the makeup to my mom and I go to a party store. I find a long blond wig and throw it on.
When I get back to Eli he's awake and getting ready for school. "Hey, how are you," I smile trying to act like nothing's wrong.
He looks at me and jumps "what happened did you get into a fight with a boxing kangaroo. Your face is bruised. Everywhere," he chuckles.
I sigh, go to the bathroom, wipe off all the makeup, get rid of the wig, and take out the contacts. When Eli sees me after that he screams. "I'm sorry," I whisper "I never thought that this would happen," I say with tears in my eyes.
"What did you do?" he says with fear etched on his face.
"Something I shouldn't have, but you know the saying," I laugh a little "curiosity killed the cat."
"WHAT DID YOU DO?!" he screams at me. He's never even raised his voice at me before.
Shocked I slam an arrow into the ground and leave. At first I didn't know where I was going, but once I was there I wish I was with a pissed off Elijah. I was at the pole.
I hear a russian accent behind me "who are you and why are you here?" I can no longer control my actions as I turn around and smirk. Shocked North asks "what did you do?"
It feels as if someone has taken over my body "the only thing I possibly could have to get answers around here, I know that you and the other guardians won't give me a straight answer, so I went to Pitch, he told me what I needed to know. That you people are the reason I'm dead," I continue against my will. "Don't get me wrong he's part of the problem, but hey, let's deal with one thing at a time," all these evil thoughts go through my skull. All of them end in everyone dead, me, Pitch, North, Jack, Tooth, Sandy, and Aster. I lift my bow, arrow nocked. I try and take control again, nothing is working, I'm trying to scream, for him to run, but I can't. Still not being able to control what I'm doing, I shoot. As I do, my body lets me take control again. So I scream, and everything starts going in slow motion, since North, is across the room, I take an arrow and stab it into the ground, and go right beside him. I shove him out of the way, and it speeds up again. The arrow hits me dead in the chest.
I look down, my black hair falling in my face. I take a breath in and I feel a sharp pain in my back. I reach around and touch where the pain was. It's the tip of the arrow. The arrow went right through me. I can't hear anything, I can't focus on anything. North suddenly comes into my vision he kneels in front of me. He says something I don't hear, and pulls the arrow out. A thought slowly creeps into my mind. If I was aiming to kill North, then why did the arrow it me in the chest? I don't miss and he's a foot taller than me. The 'me' that shot the arrow must of knew that I would jump in the way, that I would get shot. All of a sudden, everything comes back, the ability to hear, focus, and what little sight I lost. Also a sharp pain, runs me through. I look down to find the arrow gone. My gaze shifts upward, and I see, North, Tooth, Jack, and Bunnymund. They all seem freaked out. I don't blame them. North probably told them what happened. That I came in here, told him that I teamed up with Pitch, tried to shoot him, pushed him out of the way, and shot myself, without meaning to. I tilt my head down to look at the bleeding. The ground below me, looking like one of the fountains at a mall, a lot of water, and more just keeps coming. But unlike a fountain the blood doesn't disappear so more can come. My vision starts to go and my hearing is gone again, I can't feel the pain anymore. My stare goes to up and lands on the furry, tall bunny in the room, before everything goes black and I feel like I'm falling.
