Chapter 16: Hidden Agenda

"Why... why?" Zoralth's voice echoed through the empty room, fear lacing through every word.

"I would like an update on your proceedings with the plan. From what I have observed you do not seem to be... following what we have discussed," the strange voice replied with an air of superiority.

"It's harder then simply arresting her... sir. We need a valid reason, which she has not given us. What is more, she has made reasonably good friends with Firefly, which is making things even more difficult."

"You are the leader here. Should your word not be law?"

"To most, but is hard to order a dragon that is far more powerful then you are."

"You fear the fire dragoness?"

"No..."

"Do not lie to me Zoralth. I can see it in your eyes. Let me tell you, 'king' there are far more greater things to fear then a dragon of equilibrium."

There was silence for a moment as the telekinetic dragon absorbed the information that was being given to him. From the other side of the door Silver listened intently. Her heart was beating rapidly, and she hoped they didn't hear her from the other side. She knew they were talking about her, and the way the conversation was heading she had an idea why.

"A.O.D.H will be here within the month. What you have been doing so far has been just enough to keep her here. But things may change Zoralth. You may need to take extreme measures to complete your mission," the voice continued.

"Yes sire. For now though I will continue stalling her until you arrive. Once you do then it would be a simple matter for you to capture her," The king replied, seeming to be gaining in confidence again.

"I do not think stalling her will work too much anymore," the voice seemed to sigh.

"Why is that sir?"

"She is eavesdropping outside this door."

This time Silver really did growl in surprise. Without a second thought she turned around and pulled herself into a sprint, running as fast as she could. She leapt down the stairs that lead up to the throne room and opened her wings, pulling herself into a small glide, speeding up. Behind her the door crashed open, but before the telekinetic dragon could catch her she twisted around a corner and disappeared from his sight. He roared out his anger, only spotting her fleeing form.

Breathing rapidly she quickly made her way through the castle, trying to find her way back to where the dance floor was. She needed to warn the others, and quickly. Twisting through another corridor she found herself in the dancing room, back in the crowd. The guards there looked at her suspiciously, but didn't do anything, much to her relief.

Silver flew up above the crowd, trying to spot her friends. It didn't take her long to find Retrix, him being the only dragon of his kind. He was dancing with a young water dragon, who seemed quite entranced by his natural skill as he easily kept up with her. Feeling slightly guilty for ruining their dance she approached them.

"Retrix!" she called out, causing the two of them to stop and look at her in surprise, "We need to go. Now! It's urgent."

The void dragon frowned, annoyed, "What's wrong Silver?"

"No time to explain," she replied, "But we're in danger. All of us."

He could tell by her worried tone of voice that she was telling the truth. Glancing at the water dragoness he sighed. She looked angry and upset at being forced to stop and was sending a death glare toward Silver.

"Sorry Leilia," he apologised before turning and facing Silver, "Zepos was over at the edge last time I saw him, talking to a couple of dragons."

She nodded and together they flew away from a furious young dragon. They quickly scouted the party, looking for Zepos. The lightning drake was nowhere to be found, and they were running out of time. If they had any chance of escape they needed to do so before Zoralth found them again.

"There he is!" Silver sighed in relief as she spotted him talking to an earth dragon.

The two dragons glided down toward him and landed. He grinned at them.

"Hello you two," he said, happily, before frowning, seeing Silver's worried face "What's wrong?"

"No time to explain," Silver said, "But we're in danger and the longer we stay here the more likely we are to get caught."

"What?"

"Just follow me!"

Silver rose to the air with a flap of her wings and turned to where the exit was. She didn't even make it three feet before an invisible force slammed into her side, crashing her into the wall. She yelped in surprise, struggling to get out of the hold. The dragons around her all jumped in surprise, looking up at the pinned dragoness.

"Silver! You are under arrest!" growled Zoralth from across the room, "For spying for, and working with, D.E.D."

"What!?" the dragoness growled. That was their excuse?

The dragons around her growled, all turning their eyes toward the trapped dragon. They believed it as well. Worried she began to struggle against her invisible bonds but they held her tightly. Zoralth was definitely a powerful telekinetic dragon.

Suddenly a roar of pain and rage erupted from his mouth as he was hit full force and thrown into a wall. The bonds surrounding Silver disappeared and she dropped from the wall, landing with a grunt on the floor. The dragons around her backed up in surprise, still a little unsure of what exactly was happening. Without waiting for their reaction Silver sprung forward, taking wing and speeding toward the exit of the room with Zepos following close behind.

The other dragons were still a little confused; some of them hadn't properly heard the reason for her arrest, so no one stopped them as they escaped through the tunnel. Silver let out a small breath of relief but didn't stop running. This was only the start. They would definitely be coming after them.

Retrix appeared beside them, having appeared from one of his portals. He flashed a grin and Silver smiled back. She was doubly thankful for having him come along. A telekinetic dragon couldn't exactly trap a dragon that could teleport.

They ran through the tunnels until they reached the exit leading into Eldawin's Syndicate. But, much to their dismay, the guards seemed to already know what was happening. A group of dragons had conjugated at the exit, creating an impossible to break wall. Silver, Zepos and Retrix skidded to a stop, hesitating when they saw what they were up against. There was at least ten dragons, all reasonably powerful. If there were only two or three then it would be different, but they didn't stand a chance against this number in such a small space.

"Silver, Zepos, do you trust me?" asked Retrix suddenly, staring at the blockade.

"What are you going to do?" asked the lightning dragon.

"I can get us through there, but it involves travelling through the void," he replied, turning to look behind them, hearing a number of other dragons coming up behind them.

"What! Last time that happened I almost died," growled Silver.

"I know, but that was because we were inside it for almost a minute. This time it will be, at most, a second," he said.

She looked at Zepos. If they did do this then there was a chance that she could end up like she had been before, and this time there wouldn't be a fire to save her, but if they didn't do it they would end up captured, again, and most likely handed off to A.O.D.H within the month.

"Okay, do it," she said to Retrix.

The void dragon nodded and took a breath. The ground below them suddenly opened, a rip into the void. Zepos growled in surprise and Silver braced herself. They fell through. Retrix closed the rip up. There was darkness, cold, none of them could breath, then it was all over. Silver staggered slightly as they landed on the outside of the castle, behind the blockade of dragons. She shivered slightly, but it was only for a moment. There had been hardly any effect at all.

"Let's go!" yelled Retrix.

The three of them leapt into the air again and began powering their way toward the exit of Eldawin's Syndicate. The dragons that they had dodged were staring in disbelief at where their targets had just been, until one of them turned around and saw them flying away.

"After them!" he called out.

The ten dragons all took to the air, chasing after the fleeing trio. As they flew Silver let out a growl of annoyance. She just realised that Merene was still in the Syndicate somewhere. They couldn't exactly leave the mind dragon behind. She looked around the floor, desperately trying to find her friend, hoping against hope that she would reveal herself.

A fireball suddenly washed passed them, followed by a stream of high-powered water. The guard were beginning to fire at them. Silver growled and flung a storm of spikes behind her, which the other dragons simply dodged. There was a wind dragon in their midst that was steadily catching up to the three of them. They wouldn't be able to escape the way they were going.

Retrix suddenly disappeared, flying through the void, and appearing just above the wind dragon. They collided. He bit down on his opponent's wing, causing the wind dragon to screech in pain, before he let go and went through the void again, dodging a stream of acid that was sent his way.

Again he attacked, appearing behind another dragon and raking his claws through its wings, causing it to plummet from the air roaring in pain. Again he disappeared, but they were getting used to his tactics by now and this time, as soon as he came back into the world, a fire dragon blasted him in the back causing him to growl in surprise and teleport away again.

Silver and Zepos stopped and turned around. Retrix opened his maw and sent out a beam of purple energy at the dragons. An earth dragon flew forward and sent a rock into the beam, causing the beam to part harmlessly around it and the other dragons it was with. Retrix wouldn't be able to hold them for long.

With a roar Silver pushed herself forward, gathering metal in her throat. She opened her maw and sent forth a storm of small spikes, like bullets. Dragons roared in pain as they hit, breaking scales and piecing armour. She dodged passed a stream of water, aiming toward the enemy water dragon. They collided in midair, and as they did Silver formed a hook on the elbow of her wing and dug it into the wing joint of the water dragon, before pulling backward, ripping it out. The dragon screeched, flailing helplessly as it fell from the sky.

A lighting strike passed by her as Zepos fired at another dragon that had decided to try and tackled Silver from behind. He burst forward, lightning sparking from his body and collided with the other dragon. They grappled in the air for a moment, but with the electricity continuingly zapping it the dragon couldn't hold itself in the air for long and fell unconscious.

Retrix grinned, using the confusion caused by Zepos and Silver as a distraction to teleport into the fray again. He disabled the earth dragon that had blocked his attack with a simple strike to the ligaments of its wings and it fell from the sky. Working together, the three dragons quickly defeated the remaining five dragons. The attackers were completely surprised at the ability of their opponents, and had no idea how to counter either Silver or Retrix, never having faced dragons like them before. They fell quickly, crashing into the ground below with broken and disable wings or knocked unconscious.

Breathing hard Silver turned to look at the exit of the Eldawin's Syndicate, only to find that while they had been fighting more dragons had come, and were now flying toward the three of them. She swore and glanced at the other two. They wouldn't survive much longer like this. Ten dragons was one thing, a hundred was a complete other.

With a growl of annoyance she turned and began to flee again, flying back in the direction that they had come. They had a bit of a head start, but with the amount of dragons after them that would come to naught, unless they managed to find Merene. She could possibly find information on how to get them out of there.

They landed back at the castle, quickly looking for a way to get away from their pursuers. Zepos ran toward another tunnel, beckoning the others to follow. They did, entering the castle once more. As soon as they were inside Zepos turned around and charged up a lightning bolt. He fired it at the roof of the cave, causing it to crack. With a growl he did so again. This time the roof collapsed, creating a barrier between them at the dragons outside.

Taking a deep breath they turned and began to run again. The barrier they had created wouldn't hold for long, especially against the earth dragons Eldawin's Syndicate had. For now though they were relatively safe and had some quiet to be able to think of their next move.

"What do we do now?" asked Zepos as they came to a stop in one of the tunnels.

"We need to make it to the exit," replied Retrix, "Once we get there I can teleport us out."

"Yes, but between us and the exit is an army of dragons. No matter how powerful we are we wouldn't be able to defeat that many," Silver said, glancing behind her as she heard a distant explosion.

The void dragon thought for a moment, "I can transfer us to places I can see. If we get outside I may be able to get us from one side of the cavern to the other. The only problem is that it is quite a way away, and we may have to spend a bit longer in the void to be able to get there."

"How much longer?" asked Silver.

"Ten seconds at the least. Nearly a minute at the most," he replied.

"That's too risky," said Zepos, glancing at Silver.

"But if it's the only way..." the dragoness replied.

"I agree with Zepos," said Retrix, "It is too risky. You won't be the only affected by being in the void for so long Silver. Zepos would suffer nearly as much. Heck, even I'm affected by being there so long."

"What else could we do!?" growled the silver dragon.

"How about surrender?" came a voice from the end of the tunnel.

They looked up to see a mind dragon sitting in their way. It was Thylo, the dragon that was always by Zoralth's side. Silver had heard that he was the king's advisor and interrogator. It meant he was likely very powerful. She growled. Mind dragons were both one of the easiest and the hardest dragons to fight. In a physical fight they were hopeless, but if they got into your mind then there was very little hope you could win.

She wouldn't allow him the chance. With a roar she leapt forward, flicking her tail and launching a number of spikes in his direction. They were directly on target. There was no way he could dodge, but to all their surprise the spikes passed harmlessly through him. He laughed darkly as his form flickered and disappeared.

"My, my, so aggressive," laughed Thylo, his voice surrounding him.

Suddenly Silver screamed. The two drakes growled in surprise, jumping backwards as she collapsed the ground convulsing. Pain surrounded her, like she was taking a bath in lava. It cut at her mind, spearing through her conscious and into her very soul, ripping her apart. After a moment it stopped, leaving her gasping for breath, tears running from her eyes.

"What did you do!?" yelled Zepos, looking around for the assailant but not finding him.

"Nothing much," laughed an invisible Thylo, "But if you try anything I'll do it again, and again, and again. No teleporting, no trying to break this illusion. You are to come peacefully and quietly."

"Don't you need her alive?" growled Retrix, beginning to understand why they were being chased.

"Yes. But we don't need her sain," a crackling laugh came from the mind dragon, "Now, surrender!"

The two drakes looked around for the voice, trying desperately to find him. They didn't answer the question however, and a snort came from nowhere. Suddenly Silver screamed again as pain once again ruptured her mind and body.

"Fine! Fine! We surrender! We surrender!" cried Zepos, looking helplessly at Silver.

"How about you, void dragon, do you surrender?" asked Thylo.

The void dragon snarled and glanced at Silver, before bowing his head in defeat, "I... I surrender."

"Good," the mind dragon laughed again.

There was a patter of feet as a number of dragons ran into the tunnel. They stopped when they saw the three of them there. Retrix had his head bowed and Zepos was desperately trying to wake an unconscious Silver. The guards rushed the three of them, pinning them down against the hard ice. The drakes didn't resist and allowed themselves and Silver to be dragged off.
