Chapter 45: Silver's Legacy

A year had passed since the defeat of Eldawin and A.O.D.H. It took a long time for the world to recover from that battle. For the first couple of months America had tried to hunt down the dragons 'responsible' for destroying their beloved city, but had a very difficult time actually finding any. But the world knew now, they knew of the flying reptiles that occupied the earth with them, and there were many theories and debates running around the globe about the strange creatures.

Sky Mountain took a while to recover as well. Many dragons left, now that A.O.D.H was no longer a threat, returning to their hidden homes that they had been driven away from. But it was a long time before someone stepped up in an effort to lead them onto the right path.

With A.O.D.H gone, and most of the dragons free, other hunting organisations quickly found themselves overwhelmed. D.E.D made an effort to rise up but was shut down almost immediately by the combined forces of what was now known as 'The Dragon's Syndicate' and Sky Mountain. A new leader had arisen through the ranks of the icy haven with Kunder, the white ice dragon, taking on the role, as Zoralth had disappeared after the battle.

While the Syndicate remained somewhat hidden and secretive, they now had constant communication with Sky Mountain. Other dragon havens had begun appearing as well, from places within Australia to deep in the Amazon rain forest. There was even a race of water dragons that appeared from the depths of the Mariana Trench.

But there was still one problem that remained. How would they make a way to repair the relationship between humans and dragons. It was something that was on everyone's minds, and with America nearly declaring open war on the flying race, they needed to fix the problem soon. Thankfully, a possible solution was found, and Silver, the new leader of Sky Mountain, organised a meeting with the word leaders that occupied the globe.

* * *

High up in The Nest of Sky Mountain, was Iraliene's old cave. A place where Silver and her new family now occupied. One of the corridors led into a smaller cavern, with a straw nest sitting in the middle. In that nest lay three white eggs, all around twice the size of a watermelon. There was a soft glow coming from each of them, and if one were to look close enough they could see the outline of something inside.

Curled around the eggs was a dragon. A hatchling. She was a small female, around the size of a sheepdog, with deep purple scales and a slender tail. Her wings were carefully folded onto her side and her eyes were closed as she slept peacefully and protectively with the eggs.

Suddenly one of them moved. Almost instantly the little dragon's head shot up and she stared, wide eyed, at the one that did. It moved again, shuffling slightly, and the small form inside the egg seemed to be pressing up against the surface. For a moment the hatchling panicked, not knowing what to do. She took a deep breath and looked at the exit of the cave, debating something in her mind, before taking off at a sprint, dashing out of the cave with wings slightly open for balance.

She raced through the corridor and took a left turn into another, obviously knowing where she was going. A portal to the void opened in front of her and she leapt threw, appearing a number of metres in front just for a little extra speed. She raced into another cavern, this one far larger than the nesting cave. There were a number of dragons and humans in this specific area, all looking to the centre where a large table had been placed.

Around the table were a number of different humans from different races. Most of them seemed slightly nervous about being there, and continued casting wary glances around them. But most of the attention was situated toward the dragoness at the front. Silver.

The metal dragon had removed her shell, opting to allow herself to show a little bit of weakness too the humans she was talking to, make herself seem less threatening and more... delicate. Of course, anyone that knew her also knew that she could have a wave of metal in front of her faster than a bullet could leave a gun, but the humans didn't know that.

"Silver," said one of the humans, a white one, around the table, "Are you saying that destruction of the city was necessary for the survival of our race?"

"Yes, it was," the dragoness nodded her head, "And while I am very sorry for the damage we caused, if we didn't than you wouldn't be here talking to me today."

"And what about before that? Hundreds of people lost their lives in that firestorm. How do you explain that?"

"It was a mistake," Silver admitted, "But human lives weren't the only ones lost then. And in the end, that mistake lead to victory. Many a dragon... sacrificed themselves so that you may live. I want to make that sacrifice worth it."

The void hatchling began to make her way through the crowd of dragons and humans listening on the meeting, snaking her way under and through their feet toward the front. She was on a mission, and nothing was going to stop her. Slowly she made her way around toward where Silver was sitting.

"What do you propose?" it was another human that spoke this time, a dark skinned man with black hair and a thoughtful frown on his face.

"I propose that we set up a program, here at Sky Mountain, where we encourage younger humans and dragons to learn about each other and build up a relationship between our races. A place where we can be free to get to know one another. Of course we will have courses and teachings about both races. I just want you to understand us, and vice-versa. There are still a lot of dragons afraid of you."

"So a school?" the white man from before said.

"More like a university. I want people to come here willingly to learn," she said, "But I don't want children to be forced to move away from their parents just to come here."

There were a few nods from around the room as others seemed to consider the idea. The white man still wasn't entirely convinced however, and it showed in the way he tapped at the table relentlessly with his fingernails. The void hatchling snorted softly, before continuing her way through the crowd.

"When would you like to start this program?" asked another human leader.

"The beginning of next year, depending on what you people decide. We already have teachers of both races, but I wouldn't mind if your countries wanted your own people to come and teach as well. The Chinese government have already accepted this proposal, which is why I am now bringing it to you."

Again there was a slight murmuring as the humans discussed the idea between themselves. The purple hatchling took her chance and quickly darted out of the crowd toward Silver. The metal dragon grunted slightly in surprise as the hatchling butted into her leg to gain her attention.

"Vivian, not now," hissed Silver quietly in Drakin, "I'm busy."

"But mum..." Vivian growled slightly back when Silver turned away to listen to another question.

She head butted her mother again, but was ignored. Grumbling slightly the hatchling looked around, trying to figure out a way to gain her attention. The hatchling's eyes locked onto the end of Silver's unprotected tail. A sneaky grin crossed her maw and she moved over to the end and opened her mouth, before bighting down as hard as she could.

Silver let out a slight yelp of surprise and growled, before speaking with surprising control, "If you will excuse me for a moment, I just have to deal with something."

She turned around and faced Vivian, eyes narrowed angrily at the hatchling and growled in Drakin, "Vivian, I am in a meeting right now. I can not play with you at this moment."

"But mum... the eggs... you told me to come and get you if they started hatching," said the hatchling, shuffling her wings and looking at the ground.

The metal dragon blinked in shock. She hadn't expected it so soon. In fact, she was sure it would be another week until they hatched, but of course things always seemed to happen at the 'best' moments. Either way though, Silver felt herself grin slightly.

"Alright Vivian. I'm sorry I growled at you, you did the right thing. Now, go and get your brothers and meet me at our nest, okay," she said.

The little void dragon nodded eagerly and smiled, "Okay."

Silver turned back to face the humans, who had watched the whole thing slightly confused," Aaah... something important has come up which I must attend. I will leave you to talk about this idea and we will meet again... sometime tomorrow. Until then... please enjoy Sky Mountain."

She turned toward Zepos, who had been standing at the corner of the crowd watching. He frowned at her and she gestured with her wing for him to follow. She quickly turned and raced out of the cavern, the lightning dragon following her. The dragons that had overheard their conversation quickly got out of the way, smiling at the two as they rushed away. The humans were left confused, wondering what had happened.

The two dragons quickly raced into the nesting cave to find three hatchlings already there. Vivian was one of them, seeming to be very jumpy with excitement. There was another void dragon, this one a small male, slightly larger than his sister. Silver had named him Retrix, after his father, a name which even Zepos agreed fit him quite well. The last was a metal dragon, which was named after Silver's father, Elron. Ever since her father had died, Silver had wanted to continue his name through her family.

"Mum, look!" Vivian exclaimed, pointing to the eggs.

"You ready?" asked Silver, looking at her mate.

"I was with you last time this happened," he smiled, "But... yes... I'm ready."

There was an egg with cracks running all through it. They had arrived just in time. Almost immediately a yellow snout broke through the top of the shell, followed by a yowl of victory. The new hatchling struggled for a moment, before the rest of the egg fell apart, revealing a small lightning drake inside. The baby fell onto the nest, exhausted, wings awkwardly sprawled out to his side.

Silver quickly moved over to him and lightly nuzzled his back, carefully cleaning away the remaining yoke of the egg. She smiled softly, a lightning male, the first to hatch from this batch of eggs. Zepos moved up beside her and nuzzled her softly causing her to rumble.

"What do you want to name him?" she asked him.

"How about... Volt?" he said softly.

"Volt... I like it. It fits," she replied with a small chuckle, "Hello Volt."

The new hatchling grumbled to itself, looking around in a glaze of confusion. He was around the size of a cat, but Silver knew he would grow very quickly to match the size of his half-brothers and sister. At the moment, he was very awkward, trying to stand up multiple times only to collapse to the ground again. His wings were a little too large for his body, and his legs too small.

"He's tiny!" exclaimed Retrix, leaping up onto the side of the nest.

"He's no bigger than you were when you first came out of your egg," stated Silver with a chuckle.

The void hatchling tilted his head, looking down at his new family member. Volt spotted him and yowled again, this time a crackle of lightning running out, stinging the young dragon's foot. He yelped leaping into the air and out of the nest, shaking his paw.

"You better be careful," laughed Zepos as he nudged his newly hatched son with his snout, "He's already showing you whose boss."

Retrix grumbled a silent complaint and sat down on his haunches, shaking his paw again, obviously annoyed. Silver smiled slightly and turned her attention back to the other two eggs. Another had begun moving now, and ever so slowly the egg began to crack open.

It had been three months ago she had laid this clutch, as that had been how the year had worked for her. Zepos and her had become mates not long before. It was something neither of them had really planned, yet it had just happened one night. Some part of Silver felt slightly guilty, moving on so soon after Retrix's death, but she also knew the void dragon would be glad she did. She still missed him, a lot more than she let on, but she felt... satisfied. Satisfied in the way that she had been able to move past the pain and continue. Zepos had helped a lot, but that hadn't been the reason she ended up with him.

Over the course of the year Zepos seemed to have grown. He was a large part of Sky Mountain's council now, and despite Silver being the leader he had really put in effort to help the place grow. It had been him that had suggested the idea of starting a school, or university, where both dragons and humans attended to learn about one another. He was no longer unsure of what he was doing, and through it all he managed to keep time for her. She had realised how much she really did love the lightning dragon.

"It's another metal one!" it was Elron this time who spoke, his voice squeaking in excitement.

Silver watched as the second egg broke open to reveal a metallic dragoness. She rolled out of the egg with a slight grunt as it shattered open easily under the sharp metal wings. Slowly she opened her eyes, seeing the world for the first time. She didn't yowl as her brother had, but instead just seemed to rumble in surprise and fascination.

Silver cleaned her up as well, smiling as she did. Zepos smiled and nudged her softly with his tail. She glanced over at him, and titled her head.

"Your turn to name this one," he said.

She chuckled and looked down at the dragoness, "Diara... after the first metal dragon."

"Diara's a cool name," said Vivian, eyes wide as she watched her sister stumble around the nest for a moment before falling with a grunt.

"You like to keep the names in the family don't you?" said Zepos with a small grin.

"There's nothing wrong with that," snorted Silver.

He laughed, "No... no there isn't."

The last egg shook suddenly and began to crack. All eyes turned toward it, including the newly hatched ones. Once again a small yellow snort broke through the top of the shell. The egg rocked back and forth, cracks running down along its length until the hatchling inside managed to crack a hole through the side. It was another female, this time a lightning dragon, who was slightly smaller than the two that had hatched so far.

Ever so carefully she crawled through the hole she had created and fell onto the soft straw nest. She blinked, shaking her head as if confused, and looked up at her new family in interest. A small yelp escaped her maw as she shivered. Silver reached down and gently cleaned up the yoke of the egg, causing the hatchling to rumble in satisfaction.

"Haha, she likes you already," said Zepos.

"Of course she does," Silver rolled her eyes, "I'm her mum. Now, what's her name dad'o."

"Kaya," he replied, "I've always liked the name Kaya."

The hatchling chose that moment to bob her head as if in agreement. They all laughed at that. After a short recovery Silver crawled into the nest and carefully curled around them, smiling as they struggled to stand up, in Volt's case, or simply gaze around at the new world in wonder.

"Welcome to the family, Kaya, Volt and Diara," Elron said, "You're going to love it!"

They all looked at him, as though they had understood. Diara sneezed and shook her head startled, and once again they all laughed. Vivian leapt into the nest with them, carefully nudging the newly born hatchlings that were still smaller than her.

"Mum, when can I have hatchlings?" she asked innocently.

Silver chuckled and nudged her gently, "Wait at least another ten years little one. When you're a little bit older."

There was a sudden commotion at the entrance to the tunnel as a group of dragons came to a stop just at the entrance. They spotted Silver and the broken eggshells, and there were a few grumbles of annoyance.

"I missed it... again!" exclaimed West from the back.

Celestia rolled her eyes and quickly trotted over to her friend. She had her own children with her, all of them now two years old and nearly double the size of Silver's own hatchlings. That didn't stop them from playing with each other though. The light dragon looked down at the new hatchlings and smiled.

"Congratulations Silver. Now you have six to look after," she chuckled.

"Hmm, yes, you're going to need to help me a little," grinned the metal dragon.

The others came into the room as well and were introduced to the three newest dragons in the world. Blaze and Reha were there, along with their two newest family members, a fire dragoness and a water drake. Faen was there, with Tyler of course, the human respectfully staying back. West was there, the wind dragon making a raucous as usual, complaining in his joking way, causing young Retrix to laugh. Liam was there, and after waiting a moment slowly came forward to see the hatchlings. He smiled softly at both Silver and then her hatchlings, and the metal dragon smiled back.

It had been a long wait for them all. A long fight, and there was undoubtedly more challenges to arrive in the future. But this would be her legacy, and for that, Silver felt she could be content.

Hey guys! The final chapter of The Silver Reckoning, and the final chapter of the trilogy as well. Finally a happy ending, may be a bit cliche', but with what I've done I think I can afford a bit of that XD There is going to be an epilogue, which will be up shortly, and it holds one last surprise for you all ;)

For any major questions regarding the series I will be doing a Q&A section, and will answer everything there. But for now, I have some questions for you.

What was your favourite chapter of the series? Mine was the chapter where Silver managed to defeat Eldawin after being knocked out of equilibrium... truth be told it was the chapter I most looked forward to writing since the beginning of this book.

Which of the three books was your favourite? Mine... probably The Silver Dragon, the first one, simply because I felt it flowed a little better than these two, though I liked them all quite a bit.

Who was your favourite character? Mine was Silver, of course :) She was just so fun to write about and follow in her story. It's been a long time since I've felt so close to one on my characters.

Which character do you reckon was most like you? For me... it would be between Raize and Retrix. Both were very strong in there conviction and were willing to do anything to see it through, and sometimes that held them back from something. I'm not as forward as Retrix is, but I'm not as carefree as Raize is either... so yeah it would be somewhere between the two.

Anyway, that's all for now. The epilogue will be out soon. Until next time... See Ya!
