Chapter 36: Fire and Fire

Black rolling clouds began to melt into the sky, accompanied with blue flashes of lighting and a hazy sprinkle of rain. The fire of the ruined car hissed softly but still burned strong. Lamps flickered on in the nearby streets to make up for the steadily disappearing light. Heat still simmered from the ground, causing a strange mist to rise from the raindrops.

In the middle of it all were two dragons, facing each other on a desolate corner of an abandoned building sight. The dancing flames of the car created a red and yellow glow across Silver's shell. Raize was solemn, revealing nothing. He just watched his sister carefully, as if waiting for her next move, waiting for her to attack.

Diana came around the side of the car and froze when she saw the fire dragon. She glanced at Silver, noticing the tension between the two. She hadn't known Raize that well, nor did she recognise him well enough to link the two of them together. She could only assume.

"Diana, get Liam and take him to safety," she said.

The woman nodded her head and carefully grabbed Liam by the shoulders. She began pulling him away from the wreckage trying her best not to injure him further. Silver would help, but she was afraid of what Raize would do if she turned her back.

"What are you doing here?" she asked, talking to her brother.

"Nothing you need to concern yourself with," he replied, his voice just as passive as his demeanour.

"It is something I need to concern myself with, considering you nearly killed two of my friends," she growled, taking a step forward.

"They'll be dead by the end of the week," Raize seemed almost sad at the prospect, "It matter's little whether they die now, or later."

"The end of the week...?" she blinked, not realising they were so close to finishing the machine.

"Silver!" came a call from above.

The dragoness looked up and smiled slightly as the familiar beautiful red form of Firefly circled down from above them, not at all deterred by the rain or closing storm. She landed smoothly next to Silver, glancing toward Raize with a small frown. She quickly made the connection between the flaming car and the new fire dragon.

"What are you doing here?" asked Silver.

"Liam sent out a distress signal about ten minutes ago. I was sent ahead of the others to see what was wrong. It seems the problem has escalated to a bit more then a police chase."

"You could say that. Liam has been knocked unconscious, we need to get him out of here," Silver said.

"I'm afraid you two won't be going anywhere," growled Raize suddenly, seeming slightly annoyed at Firefly blatantly ignoring him, "Well, at least not Silver anyway."

"And who's this?" asked the fire dragoness.

"My brother... Raize," replied Silver.

"Oooh, so this is the traitor brother I've been hearing so much about," she turned to face him and began to walk forwards, "You're the smallest of the bunch. Didn't expect that."

He snorted, "And you are... Firefly, I'm guessing."

"Well guessed," she chuckled.

She began to pace toward the fire drake, making him frown and take a small step backwards. As she walked she flicked her tail in Silver's direction, a silent gesture to get out of there. The dragoness hesitated, not want to leave her alone to face the power of her brother. But, in the end, she guessed they were both dragon's of equilibrium.

Slowly she turned, leaping over the flaming wreckage once again, and growling softly as the sharp pain from her bullet wound spiked through her leg. She quickly shook it off. She looked to where Diana had brought Liam into shelter under the ruined building and quickly padded up to them.

* * *

As soon as Silver hopped over the car Raize growled, and opened his wings to go after her, but Firefly was fast and leapt in front of him with a small smile. He froze, eyeing the dragoness with mild annoyance. He moved again in an attempt to get past her, but again she blocked his way.

"Don't make me hurt you," he snarled.

"You know, Silver said you were the joker of the family. I guess she was right," said Firefly, lashing her tail in a challenge.

Raize narrowed his eyes, letting flames flicker over his form as he crouched into a low position, finding her exceedingly annoying. He studied her again, this time seriously, watching her form. She really was an incredibly beautiful dragon, with a long ruby tail and large wings. Sharp horns, long claws and a gaze that ripped right through him. There were two words that came to his mind. Beautiful and dangerous.

Yet she looked so relaxed, as though she wasn't paying attention to a thing he did. Her eyes spoke otherwise, studying him with the same intensity as he studied her. Raize immediately knew that she was a powerful fighter, confident and well equipped, but she had never faced another that equalled her power. He had.

Moving quickly her suddenly launched forward flames erupting from along his scales. Most of the time it took dragon's by surprise, but her reaction utterly surprised him. Instead of leaping sideways as he would have expected from a dodge, she launched upwards, using her own flames to speed her movement, before opening her maw and spewing fire across his back.

It hurt. It hurt a lot. With a small cry of surprise he quickly pulled himself to a stop and turned to face the now flying dragoness with teeth bared. He had never been hurt like that by fire, never, and that had been but a single blast from her. The pain was strange. It tingled up and through his body, burning away at the back of his scales, but didn't go through much more then that before disappearing. Yet it still made him wary.

"Don't underestimate me little dragon," growled Firefly, her voice more dangerous then before, "I have held this power for far longer then you have."

"It seems so," he replied shortly, before burning forward again, launching himself into a flaming fireball directly toward her.

This time she met it with her own, the two dragons lighting the sky with fire.

* * *

Silver nudged Liam softly, wondering if he would be all right. His head was bleeding, but not excessively, and his chest rose and fell evenly. He probably hadn't suffered more than a small concussion, much to Silver's relief. She new how fragile a human could be.

"Help is on the way," said Diana, "Tyler just radioed in saying they were coming."

"Good, we'll..." Silver was interrupted by a flash of lightning and a thunderous roar accompanied by the two fire dragons crashing in midair.

In all that sound something caught her eye. A small movement at the top of the 'L' shaped, half finished building. She turned toward it, and froze. There was a dragon, sitting and watching the fight from his vantage point. The pail blue scales and large size were unmistakable. He turned a looked at her, straight into her eyes, and she froze, unable to move. Not because of him, but the bout of fear that suddenly shot through her. Eldawin.

"On second thought," Silver continued, recovering from her surprise and still looking up at the mind dragon, "You two stay here and wait for help. I need to check something out."

* * *

The two flaming dragons crashed hard into each other, fire exploding outwards as they did. Raize was the first to recover from the momentary stun and lashed out, flames whipping out from his wings and claws as he landed his first hit on the opposing dragoness. She snarled as she was battered away. Taking advantage he flew into her again, tackling her into the city apartments parallel to the construction sight.

The broke through the wall and into someone's flat, instantly setting anything flammable on fire. Firefly reacted swiftly, kicking him in the stomach and, using her fire like a rocket, rammed him upwards, through the roof of the flat into the one above, and then into the sky, before hitting him hard with her right wing, once again powered by fire.

He flipped dizzily in the air, righting himself only to have her tail lash across his chest, sending the burning pain through him once again. He grunted, hurriedly pulling fire into his wings and blocking the next attack from her, surprised by the unrelenting force of this dragon.

"Is that all you got?" she hissed, "Silver gave more of a fight before she reached equilibrium."

He growled before spreading his wings and letting fire explode from his body, sending her tumbling backwards. She quickly righted herself only to have the fire drake turn the tables, tackling her out of the air toward the ground. They grappled for a moment, fire washing over their claws and setting their bodies aflame. A moment later they collided with the ground, Raize managing to get the upper hand just before they did.

The bitumen ground cracked, and fire boiled over from their bodies, quickly spreading across the road. Fire alarms in the apartment building began to wail. Smoke rose into the air. Lightning flashed in the sky as the dark storm clouds grew ever closer. And Firefly chuckled.

"That's more like it," whispered the dragoness.

Suddenly fire from the road whipped up and barrelled into Raize's side, knocking him across the road and burning him again. With a growl he quickly recovered, using the momentum to roll to his feet, only to be pounced on by the dragoness again.

Firefly was bigger then him, and while he was thicker she seemed to be stronger. She also had experience in her fire, having been using her equilibrium for six years while Raize had only had his for one. Her tail was longer, and whipped far deadlier. Her body was more streamline, more aerodynamic, as was usual for a female, making her faster in the air and allowing her to hit harder. All these things crossed his mind as he struggled to shrug off the blow, only to be delivered another. And she was ruthless.

He stumbled, this time managing to block the strike, before flipping and opening his maw. Pure white flames blasted from his mouth, surprising her as she was forced to jump backwards and shield herself from the deadly fire. The ground around them melted instantly into molten rock and what wasn't already on fire in the nearby building blazed upwards instantly at the heat. Whatever humans were inside had either evacuated quickly, or were now dead.

She had all the advantages in this fight. All of them. Strength, speed, even power. There was only one way he could equalize the field, and that was bringing their real power to the fore. He opened his wings, pushing himself into the sky and looking down at her. Without waiting another moment he began to pull at the power within his stomach, the power that had become so relevant in his life. Firefly's eyes widened.

"You wouldn't," she said.

"Too late," was his reply as the power of flaming equilibrium flooded him.

* * *

Silver was flying up toward the mind dragon when she felt it, the power washing over the battlefield, over the city. Heat ripped through the air, causing a shimmering haze. Time and space contorted under the power, and Silver found herself quickly dashing into the building halfway up to gain shelter as her brother exploded into flames.

* * *

Firefly had just enough time to throw a flaming shield around herself as she was swarmed by the other dragon's heat. She growled, the force of the flames surrounding her in a tempest. She had never felt this before. Or, at the very least, she had never felt it from another dragon.

She stumbled backwards, trying to hold on to her shield of fire, but the constant battering on all side was quickly waring her down. She wouldn't last much longer. Not against this ferocious power. She took a step back, looking upwards to only see fire. Fire at every corner, swirling around her, pushing at her, bringing destruction to everything nearby, and she knew, she would be forced to rise as well.

Taking a deep breath she closed her eyes, pulling at her own knot of strength, letting it release through her like a flood. Her own power mixed with Raize's, contorting the surrounding area. Her eyes glowed a fiery yellow. Flames began spreading through her body and setting her aflame, until she exploded with power, ripping the other dragon's equilibrium apart. Everything became chaos as she, in her true form, rose into the sky, forming into the shape of a dragon, but still made from pure fire.

"Then this is how we will end," her voice echoed in challenge.

The other equilibrium drew back together, recovering from the explosion as if nothing had happened. There was a growl, primal and destructive, before the flames expanded rapidly, throwing itself into the sky. Firefly responded, becoming a formless mass as the two equilibriums crashed, exploding through the sky.

* * *

The silver dragon breathed heavily as she moved through the building, trying to find shelter from the overwhelming heat caused by the two equilibriums. She was surprised the building she was in was still standing, She was sure anything else within their radius had been burned to rubble. It probably meant a massive amount of people had died.

Shaking the thought from her head she made her way up a flight of stairs, hopping five at a time, until she came to a stop at the top. Hot wind billowed through the half finished building, and the walls were coloured in orange and yellow light. It felt as though she were in an oven, and the rising heat of her shell told her it wasn't going to get much better.

She turned a corner into a room, and stopped, narrowing her eyes. There he was, sitting and watching the flames dancing below and around him. They lit up his form, but he wasn't affected at all by it. The heat didn't bother him. And it seemed like he didn't notice her walk in.

Knowing she wouldn't get an opportunity like this again, she flicked her tail, sending a spike toward the back of the dragon's head. He didn't even move as the spike hit, and continued through, causing the illusion to shimmer and then disappear. She blinked in surprise, before snorting, wondering why she was surprised.

"That's a rude way to greet someone Silver," came a voice from the other side of the room, causing her to jump in surprise.

"Eldawin," she growled.

"Good to see you too," he smiled, "It's been a while."

"What do you want?" she narrowed her eyes.

"I could ask the same question," he replied, "You were the one that came up here."

"You were the one that wanted me to come."

He laughed, taking a step forward and looking over the edge of the half finished room of the building. Below them the fires continued to rage like a hurricane. Silver couldn't tell who was who. She couldn't even tell where one equilibrium ended and another began. It was a formless mass, crashing and roiling like the ocean. The fire had spread around the entire building, and up, surrounding it, but not a flicker of flame actually touched it.

"Amazing, isn't it," breathed the mind dragon, "Unlike anything I've ever seen."

Silver glanced at him, before looking back at the battle. It was indeed amazing. Fire had always been hypnotising, but this was on a different level. The patterns, the explosions happening randomly, the clashes as two different points battered together. Was this what it was for two equilibriums to fight? Just pure power. Pure fire, spreading across the city, slowly but steadily. There were sirens in the distance, likely firemen, though how they would stop something this dangerous she didn't know.

"If they are not careful they'll destroy the entire city," growled Silver suddenly in realisation.

"True," he replied, not seeming fazed by the realisation, "But this battle will be over long before then."

She turned to look at him, narrowing her eyes. What was he doing. She dared not attack him, as she was quite sure he had a very careful watch over her. It seemed he was just content to watch the battle unfold, eyes wide with excitement.

A pillar of flame pieced through a section of the fire, but it was quickly closed over again as spirals of flame curled up and around the pillar, drawing it back into the formless mass. It was so confusing, and part of Silver wondered whether the two dragons were actually fighting. The doubt was quickly erased when a massive explosion leapt across the apartment building. It shook, before crumbling to the ground.

"We need to stop them," said Silver, taking a step forward only to be frozen in place by a mental spear being sent into her mind.

"No, we will watch."

She growled, trying to move, but it was like her body had completely frozen up, "Eldawin..."

"We will watch," he looked at her with narrowed eyes.

Another explosion erupted through the sky and part of the fire shivered, like it had been reduced somehow. It quickly raged back up however, moving and fighting back. Silver didn't know if it had been Raize or Firefly who had landed the seemingly strong blow.

"Would you like to know who is who?" Eldawin chuckled as he looked back at her, "Here."

Suddenly the fire changed, and Silver blinked in surprise. It had taken on two different colours. Purple and red. The purple looked as though it had pierced through the red, and was trying to rip it apart. The red however was slowly digging into the centre of the purple, completely ignoring the pillars that had been imbedded inside it.

"The purple is Firefly. The red is Raize," explained Eldawin, still watching the fight, "Well, at least as far as I can tell. It is hard to follow the mind of a dragon in equilibrium."

Silver only growled, still struggling to make her body move. Whatever he was doing to her, it was working very well.

"You know," he continued, smiling, "The loser of this battle will likely die."

She frowned, looking at him, "I won't let that happen."

"Oh, I'm not sure you have a choice in the matter," he said, "I was just wondering... who do you want to win? Your friend... or your brother."

The dragoness blinked, looking at the battle with a newfound horror. She needed to find a way to stop it. Any way at all. She couldn't let them die, either of them. Another explosion ripped apart the clouds above as Raize shot through the middle of the purple flames.

"For me, I really don't want Raize to die. I've become quite fond of the young drake. The effort he's put into helping me is admiral to say the least. And he is on my side of course. But... Silver... who do you want to win?" he tilted his head at her, before chuckling, "Well that is surprising indeed. Or not, I guess."

"No," Silver growled in response, "This doesn't need to happen."

"But it already has," he replied.

The purple fire wavered as the red began to expand, tying it up, surrounding it. Flaming red arrows pieced through the purple. Firefly slowly began to shrink as she was attacked from all sides, Raize surrounding and battering again, going up and through like nots of fire. Silver began to grow worried.

Firefly struggled to fight back, but Raize seemed to have gained control. He began to push at her, not allowing any chance to escape the flaming depths as he took full control of the sky. He surrounded her on all sides, not allowing any chance to escape. She continued to dwindle, trying to break a hole in the fire surrounding her very self, but every effort was met with a wall of red flames.

"No," whispered Silver.

"Of course, this could have all been avoided if you just stopped," said Eldawin, "But now, I fear you have gone too far."

"Stop this!" roared Silver, but Eldawin ignored her.

The power in the air began to dwindle, as did the purple flames, until it reached a point where Silver could barely see them past the sea of red fire. She couldn't do anything to help. If she could she would launch into her own equilibrium, but if she pushed herself that far she knew that Eldawin would defeat her, easily. If that happened, any hope of winning this way was lost. So she continued to watch hopelessly.

Something seemed to break in the fire, and a roar echoed through the sky. The roar of a dragon. Silver whimpered as the purple fire imploded, drawing back into it's original self, not having enough power to hold itself together. Firefly was left laying on the ground in her normal form. Flesh and blood. Slowly she pushed herself to her feet, and wobbled, barely able to stay up.

"And this is where it ends," sighed Eldawin.

"No!" Silver screeched and with a sudden push of mental effort broke from the mind dragon's control, leaping forward, but he was fast.

With a snarl he bit down at her tail, halting her in her tracks. With a slight grunt he yanked her backwards, then used his paw to pin her down at her neck, quickly breaking her mind again and freezing her body. She roared out and struggled against his grip, both mental and physical, but he held her with an iron will of his own.

"Watch!" he hissed at her, "See what you have wrought."

Firefly looked to the sky, suddenly seeming very small as the fire equilibrium began to gather above her like a tornado ready to strike. Her wings fell to her side as she realised there was no escape. Then the fire collapsed down upon her.

"Firefly!" Silver screamed as her friend was engulfed in flames.
