Chapter 7: Life on the Farm
Silver turned at tight corner and swooped down low over the flat green ground. She let loose a low roar, using the sound to frighten her prey to the left, right where she wanted them to be. She flew above the cattle as she watched them trample as fast as they could into the next paddock. The farmer came in behind them and locked the gate, boxing them in. She landed behind him with a small thud.
"Well done," said Darren brushing off his hands.
Silver smiled and looked to the sky, "Is that all today?"
He nodded, "That is all. I have some computer work to do but I don't think you can help with that."
"Okay, See ya!" Silver too to the air with a grin, glad to be free for the day.
For the few weeks she had been their farming had proved to be far different then she realised. Most of it was just moving the cattle around to different paddocks. She was also used to spot out breaks in the electric fence where cattle had gotten through, or any dead beasts that had fallen to some ailment. Those she was allowed to eat if she wished.
The work had kept her quite busy. She often found herself falling to sleep early, tired after a days work. It wasn't extremely physically taxing but it was a continuous thing. It at least kept her fit, but every so often she wished she could have a break from the work. She didn't complain though, it gave her a relatively safe place to rest while she figured herself out.
Sighing she came to a landing near the shed and stretched her wings out. She had finished early that day and the sun was still high in the sky. It was probably around mid afternoon, which gave her a few hours to herself. She looked around, searching for something to do. She had wanted to start working on her powers again like her father had taught her to, but there was no way to train, no dragons to practice with. She sighed, looking over at the small forest area that stretched through the farm, and an idea came to her.
Smiling she took to the air. She could use the trees as obstacles and practice her flying. She was already quite good when it came to agility but one could never completely stop with the work. She just hoped she didn't accidently cut down any of the trees in the process. Once she was above the forest she folded them in and dove down towards the ground. As she passed through the trees she opened them and thrust them forward, and collided straight into a tree. With a groan she fell to the ground.
She lay there for a few moments, recovering from the shock, before getting to her feet again. The world swam for a moment and she closed her eyes, letting herself recover a little before taking a few more steps forward.
"That wasn't the best idea," she said to herself as she stumbled back to the shed, not trusting herself to fly.
As she reached her shed she collapsed into her straw nest. A headache had formed and she knew she would hurt for the next few days. Sighing she shifted in her nest, looking to the half finished metal bowl beside her. It was what she had made of her nest so far. While sleeping on straw was far better then sleeping on the ground, a metal nest was what she preferred to have.
Deciding she would rather do something then sit and worry about the headache she began to work on her nest again. It was slow work. Adding metal then shaving it away, and soon she was lost on her own world. She was so lost that she didn't notice the sudden appearance of Greg, the farmer's boy, walking up towards her.
"Hey," he said, startling her from her work.
She looked up at the boy and smiled, "Hey."
"Dad said you had finished early," he said, sitting down on the straw bed.
The two of them had become quite good friends over the few weeks she had been there. They often talked when they had the time, and occasionally they would wonder around the farm together. The few times the boy had asked to have a ride she had instantly said no. While he wouldn't have been that heavy she would feel extremely uncomfortable with another human on her back, and she doubted whether he would be able to stay on her back.
"How was your school?" she asked, pushing the metal nest to the side.
"Oh, same as always. Boring," he laughed a little as he said it.
She smiled back. She had found the idea of this 'schooling' very weird. Parents sending their children away to be taught a number of different things about the earth and how to read and write and being taught the science of many different things of the world. It all seemed a little pointless to her.
"You rounded up cows I'm guessing," he grinned.
She snorted but bobbed her head in a 'yes'.
"Hey, are you going to show me your powers today? You said you would when you had the chance, and I still have a few hours till dinner time," he said eagerly.
She hesitated. She had never been much of a show off, maybe a bit boastful, but never a show off. The only times she used her abilities were when she was training or creating something, or fighting, but other then that they had no use.
"Oh come on Silver, you promised," pleaded Greg.
"Aargh, fine. I probably need the practice anyway," she got up from her nest and shook herself, getting rid of all the hay straws that had wedged themselves under her scales, "Is their anywhere we can go where I won't be in danger of accidently damaging any of your fathers stuff?"
Greg nodded, "I'll grab my motorbike. Just wait here."
Silver did as she was told, watching the boy run back to his house. He came back a few minutes later riding a loud two wheeled vehicle that she had learned was called a motorbike. His was rather small compared to his father's, but still ran quite well. It was dark red in colour and had many brown dirt stains across its cover and wheels. Greg now had on a helmet slightly to large for his head and a long hardy jumper that was also covered in dirt and grim.
He revved the engine a few times before talking to Silver, "Follow me from the air. I know the perfect place."
He slammed the visor down on his head and sped of on the bike, the loud noise grating against Silver's sensitive ears. She growled slightly but did as the boy said. She took to the air in a much more silent and graceful fashion then the motorbike and followed him through the large farm.
Greg led her into a small grove of paperbark trees about a kilometre away from the farmhouse. He stopped in the middle where there was a small clearing that Silver could access. She did gladly, gliding down and landing in amongst the foliage. Greg took of his helmet and turned of his bike before looking back at Silver with a smile.
"This should be a good place. No one's around for miles," he said.
She nodded, wondering what to show the boy first.
"Show me how you breath metal. I've seen you working on that thing where you sleep but I've never seen you shoot it," he said eagerly.
Silver laughed slight but nodded, "Okay, stand back. I don't want to hit you with this stuff."
She opened her maw and shot a glob of liquid metal at a tree. It hit the middle of the tree and instantly solidified. She smiled, a perfect shot, right where she had aimed it. Greg laughed a little at the display.
"I was expecting more then that," he challenged.
She looked at the boy and snorted, "Fine."
She opened her maw again and sprayed liquid metal at the tree. It covered the entire length of the paperbark trunk, creating a silver shell that expanded the whole length of the bush. Silver sat on her haunches to admire her work. The sun caught the silver shell and scattered light all through the clearing and made her smile. The shine was really quite beautiful.
"Wow, that's cool," he said, walking up to the tree to inspect it.
He knocked on the metallic trunk, creating a ring to echo outwards. The other side of the tree was still free of the metal, making it half and half. Silver wondered if it would be able to survive it's new shell, and looked forward to seeing how it did for the next few weeks.
"Can you do anything else?" asked Greg.
Silver nodded. She looked back to her tail and formed spikes on it, before flicking them at the metallic tree. Each spike embedded into the trunk, except for a few which flew wide. She made a small growl. Her aim was a bit off.
"Spikes, cool!" said Greg and attempted to pluck one of the spikes from the tree, only to find it was stuck.
"I can also do this," said Silver, making her metal shell expand and cover her whole body.
Greg's eyes widened with surprise and he walked over to the now full metal dragon. He tapped her side, causing a dull ring to echo through the trees much like what had happened with the tree.
"I can also transform my tail into different things," she said, forming it into a razor sharp blade, "But I still haven't learnt everything yet. I should be able to darken my shell but I can't do that very well, and there are a few other things I haven't perfected yet. But I plan to."
"That's still so cool though," said Greg, "When I was young I always thought that dragons could only breath fire. But now I know there are so much more then that. Its awesome."
Silver flushed with pride at the compliment, "Yeah, it is pretty cool."
He looked up at the sky, "Hey, well, I need to head back now. Dinner should be almost ready. I'll see you tomorrow."
"Yeah, tomorrow," replied the dragoness.
She watched as the boy sped off on his motorbike before looking around the clearing again. This would be a great place to start her training up again. She needed to after her rather sloppy performance that day. A few weeks without using her powers was taking its toll. Nodding to herself she took to the air and followed Greg back to the farm house.
