Chapter 16: Half Way
Dragons weren't made for stealth. They were to big; to cumbersome, no matter how lithe or slim they were, especially in small areas. And as the two dragons made there way through the base they couldn't help but wince at the occasional loud clack of claws against cement, or the scrape of a metallic tail against a wall.
"There better not be any humans around," muttered Zepos, taking extra care to walk with the pads of his feet.
They were pretty certain that Silver could fling her tail spikes if worst came to worst, but that was really the only weapon the two of them had. They couldn't attack with teeth or claws, if they got to close to the humans then they got zapped, and they definitely couldn't use their elements for any reason whatsoever.
Silver stopped at a corner and looked around, before continuing her movement. It was difficult to navigate through such an area, but with Krista's memories of the place it was like she knew it like the back of her paw. As long as they didn't take a wrong turn anywhere she was pretty she could get them to the command centre. And through looking past all his memories she knew that the hardest part was yet to come.
They stopped at another turn, the path continued to go forward, and Silver took a deep breath. This was it. She glanced around the side, and quickly pulled her head back. It would be so useful to have a mind dragon with them now. Two human guards were standing at the entrance to two double doors. The problem was that was the way they were supposed to go.
"Two guards," she whispered quietly to Zepos.
The electric dragon narrowed his eyes, "And that is the only way?"
She nodded her head.
"Okay, I will distract them and as they come up you get them with your tail spikes," he said.
She nodded again and let spikes grow from her tail. The collar didn't zap her, much to her relief. She took a couple of steps back, away from the corner and nodded to Zepos. The electric dragon gathered himself and tensed, before suddenly pouncing past the turn. A small grunt of surprise followed and the sound of guns being cocked.
"Did you see that?" asked one of the humans.
"Yes. It looked like a dragon," as soon as the men walked into the corridor Silver struck, lashing out her tail and sending a dozen tail spikes in there direction.
A small cry left one man as a spike caught him in the chest while the other fell silently, two spikes imbedded in his neck and head. The rest of the spikes missed and were headed directly for Zepos. He growled in surprise and ducked, but not fast enough. One of the spikes scraped along the top of his head, drawing a trickle of blood, and straight into the collar. It broke the metal, causing it to spring open, before collapsing to the ground with loss of momentum. Zepos's collar soon followed, falling beside the spike. Both dragons stared at it in surprise, silent for a moment.
"Okay, what was that?" Zepos whispered, startled.
Silver walked over to him and touched the broken collar with her tail. Broken wires sent out electrical bolts onto the floor below, creating the occasional spark. She let out a small laugh of disbelief. It seemed the spikes were able to cut through the collars without much trouble at all. They weren't as strong as she thought they were. She voiced her theory to Zepos, who agreed.
"Now try with your collar. Maybe not with spikes but try cut it off with your tail or something," Zepos said.
"I'll try," she replied, forming the end of her tail into a blade.
She aimed it at the collar and swung as hard as she could, angling the blade so it wouldn't cut through her scales. It hit the collar, and stuck. Pain ruptured through her as the collar punished her for the attempt at escape. She opened her maw to scream, not being able to hold it in, but Zepos had seen what had happened and clamped her muzzle shut. A small whimper escaped her instead as she collapsed, convulsing slightly as the electricity ran through her. The pain died and she relaced again. Zepos slowly freed her muzzle, allowing her to gasp in air.
"Are you alright?" he asked worriedly.
"Yeah," she coughed, "But lets not try that again."
"Agreed," Zepos replied.
Silver slowly got to her feet, shaking slightly. That pain was something else. It was probably the worst feeling she had ever felt. The electricity targeted every sensitive nerve in the body and attacked it; at least that was what Eril had said. It was why it hurt so much.
She was a bit confused as to why her collar didn't cut open. Maybe the spikes were sharper then her bladed tail? Or maybe they just had more force behind them, which allowed them to cut easier. It didn't matter anyway. Her collar would be off soon and when that happened she was likely going to destroy this base.
Once the two dragons had gathered themselves once more they walked over to the door, this time Zepos leading the way. Now that he had his collar off he would easily be able to kill any human that got in the way. Though they still wanted to be a stealthy as possible. Even with Zepos's freedom any sounded alarm would bring squadrons of soldiers that the electric dragon would not be able to handle.
"Behind this door is the main hanger," whispered Silver, "By memory there will probably be at least five human guards in there. The control room is on the other side. It is a large open area with a sidewalk surrounding it. Once we get inside it will be a simple matter to hide, but opening this door may alert one of the guards. There is usually one that is walking along the sidewalk at this side. If we can open the door as he passes and grab him then it will be quite easy to slip inside."
Zepos nodded, impressed by her knowledge, even if it wasn't hers, "How does it feel to have memories that aren't yours?"
"Strange," she admitted, "But worth it."
Silver pushed open the door slightly, leaving a gap in which they could just see out off. It was a small door, much to her annoyance, and much of her bulk took up the door. They would only be able to get through one at a time, so she let Zepos take the lead. He was the only one who could get in close quarters to humans without being zapped.
"Here he comes," he said.
Silver took a couple of steps back to allow the electric dragon room. Seconds past as both dragons waited anxiously for the man to get close enough. The human's footsteps were soon sounded as he came close to the door. He seemed to be grumbling about something, murmuring under his voice. A second later Zepos moved. He opened the door, snatching the human before he could make a noise, and quickly stabbed him through the chest. He died quickly.
They leaned him against the side of the wall and slowly made there way through the door, in case any other humans saw them. None did. They quickly opened their wings and glided down to the floor of the hanger, hiding behind numerous boxes. Silver took a breath of relief. The hardest part was over.
The hanger was gigantic. Its roof reached high into the sky, at least a hundred metres. Hundreds of different vehicles from planes to tanks were piled into the hanger. Crates were also spread throughout, full of different weapons and ammunition. It was like these people were ready to go to war. Throughout the hanger different lights were swinging around, searching through the crates and vehicles. There was an exit sign at the other side, lit up green, showing the way out. Silver took a mental not of it, knowing it would help them later.
"There's more then five," whispered Zepos.
"I said at least five," replied Silver, "There could have been more."
"I count ten. That's double," the electric dragon said.
"Shut up," snorted the dragoness, letting her shell darken to a dull grey.
She began to move through the crates and vehicles. Zepos followed close behind her, chuckling slightly. This place was much easier to sneak through then a corridor. At least they had places where they could hide as a light passed over them. However the wider space didn't make them any quieter. Constant clacking of claws against the ground sent loud echoes across the hanger. Lights followed wherever they went but the humans just assumed it was one of their other guards. But the dragons couldn't fool them forever.
"We'll never get passed them at this rate," hissed Zepos as they hid behind an armoured vehicle they were nearly as big as.
"I know," Silver replied, seeing their problem, "But we can't just try and break through."
The two dragons sat in silence for a moment. The dragoness looked at the roof as an idea came to her. If they were able to fly then they could get high enough so the torches didn't reach them. It was risky, but once they were high enough it would be rather safe. The only problem was taking off and landing.
"We could fly," she suggested to the electric dragon.
Zepos looked to the roof, seeming to go through the idea in his mind and nodded, "Good idea."
They began to move again, wanting to get to an area where they could lift of easily without being seen. As they walked they didn't notice a beam of light pass over them, but they did notice the shout that echoed out over hanger, and they noticed as a gunshot rang out.
"Dragons! Dragons in the hanger!" yelled one of the guardsmen, firing his gun down towards them.
Silver cried out in surprise as a bullet pinged off her right wing. The two dragons didn't waist another moment. They spread their wings and leapt to the air, Silver slightly head of Zepos. They flew higher and higher, trying to get out of accurate range of gunfire, and then Silver's collar activated.
She screeched in pain as her wings seized and she plummeted from the air. She crashed into a plane causing it to skid sideways. Her body convulsed as the collar tortured her, stopping her from making any other movement other then a scream. Lighting arched through the sky as Zepos flew down to help her. An explosion ruptured the air as the lightning bolt hit a pile of oil barrels. An alarm sounded and red lights began to flash through the hanger, lighting it up.
"Silver get up!" yelled Zepos as he landed in front of her.
The collar had stopped zapping her now but Silver was feeling lightheaded after the crash, everything flashing in and out of focus. Zepos snarled and gave her a quick jab to the leg with his claw, the pain causing her vision to focus. She growled and rolled to her feet. The explosion had brought them some time but it wouldn't be much.
"We need to get out of here!" yelled Zepos, "There is an exit to the other side of the hanger!"
Silver nodded. She turned and began to run, not trusting herself to fly again. But it didn't help her either way. The collar activated again sending her stumbling from her feet, crashing into the ground. A scream escaped her throat. They couldn't fight like this. She sent a number of tail spikes back the way they came hoping she managed to hit something and tried to get to her feet again, but her collar electrocuted her a third time.
Her vision began to swim as unconsciousness beckoned her into its darkness. The collar activated again, and another scream retched her throat. She coughed up blood and closed her eyes. The pain was unbearable. Oh she just wanted it to leave her alone. Why couldn't it just disappear?
"No Silver! Don't give up yet!" Zepos cried.
He slipped his neck under her and hauled her onto his back. He wasn't going to leave her behind, not after all the trouble they had been through. But it was hopeless. An explosion knocked him off his feet as he ran, throwing Silver into a nearby truck. She whimpered, not having the strength to scream, as her collar activated again. Her muscles clenched and tear trickled from her eye. It was all too much. Too much.
"Leave me," she murmured.
"No! We have to escape! I'm not leaving you here!" Zepos began to struggle to get her up onto his back again.
A bullet flew out of the fire caused by the explosion, ricocheting off the flaw and skimming the electric dragon's flank. He growled in pain and sent a lighting bolt through the smog, electrocuting a party of men. But there were more coming.
"Please Zepos," cried Silver as another volt of pain attacked her body, "Please. Just get out of here! I'll by you all the time I can."
"No Silver. I can't leave you. Don't make me do this," he tried to get on her onto his back again but she pushed herself off.
"Your no use to me if you're captured! Go! Find an escape plan. More dragons even, and come back. Please don't get captured because of me. Go! Please go," the silver dragon yelled at him.
Zepos gulped and watched as the she convulsed again as the collar tried to defeat her. His heart ached. He knew she was right. There was no way he could get out of this place with her. It was impossible. But he couldn't just leave her. She had freed him, twice, and he couldn't just let her be captured.
With a mournful whimper he took a step back, sending a bolt of lighting at a group of humans that ran through the smoke. The bolt caught the first one in the chest, sending him flying back into his comrades. Silver's scream echoed through the hanger again, but she forced herself to her feet. He tail sprung up with spikes as she whipped them forward, impaling another squadron of guards.
"Go Zepos!" she yelled.
With a wail of remorse he turned and opened his wings, and flew off into the air. As he flew he sent a wave of electricity into the trucks, causing a massive eruption to blast the hanger. It wouldn't kill a dragon, but humans were another matter, and it caused enough distraction for him to fly down towards the exit. Silver's scream followed him as he flew, before it was abruptly cut short.
The dragoness's head fell to the floor as the collar finally won the fight. Unconsciousness pulled her into its comforting darkness. There was no fight left in her at all. Her body went limp.
