Chapter 15: The Escape Plan

'Your plan won't work,' said Krista as they flew over the dragons below them. Several looked up at the glinting form of Silver as her shell caught the light, but she didn't notice them. She felt angry, and scared, at the dragon beside her. There was no doubt that he knew quite a lot about what the dragons were planning that night. They were at his mercy.

"What do you mean?" she asked, seething quietly.

'Speak with your mind Silver. We do not want to risk anyone catching our conversation.'

'Oh, like this?'

'Yes, thankyou. And I mean exactly as I say. Your plan won't work.'

Silver glanced at the dragon frowning, 'Why are you helping us?'

'I will tell you later, if your plan succeeds.'

A low growl formed in her throat. She didn't trust him, not at all. But she really didn't have a choice. The dragon knew their secret and she couldn't really threaten him. If anything he could blackmail them if he so wished, but for some reason he wasn't. The dragon was collarless! He had accepted humans as his leaders. Why would he want to help them at all?

The two of them landed beside Celestia, who studied Krista suspiciously. Silver had no doubt that the light dragon blamed him for her broken wing. He was the one that had read her mind after all.

"Can you flatten out your wing?" Silver asked her, wanting to get this over as quickly as possible.

Celestia lay on the ground and spread her flimsy wing as far as the broken bone would allow it to go. She was obviously in pain, but Silver admired her for not making any noise. It was probably to show defiance in front of Krista, though the mind dragon probably could hear the silent screams she was throwing out in her mind.

"Now, I'm going to need to cut open the broken part of your wing. It'll hurt, so brace yourself," Silver said to Celestia.

The light dragon didn't say anything, but her muscles tensed and she clamped her jaw shut. Silver was surprised, and slightly grateful, that she didn't question her. If a dragon wanted to cut her wing open she knew she would want to know exactly why. The trust showed by the light dragon warmed her heart.

Being as careful as she could Silver formed the end of her tail into a blade and carefully cut a small slit just above the broken bone. The cut was clean, the blade being as sharp as it was, and a small amount of blood began to well at the sight of the wound. The bone was revealed, and Silver let loose a small sigh of relief. It was a clean break, something that would be rather easy to fix.

"You might want to bight something, this is going to hurt... a lot," said Silver, looking at the light dragon.

Celestia hesitated, looking around for something to grab. There were stones lining the ground in places and the light dragon pulled one over to her, before nodding her readiness to Silver. She looked down at the bone. Dragon bones were hollow, so it looked like a giant white reed had been placed there instead of a bone.

Silver gathered a small amount of metal on the tip of her tongue and manoeuvred the bone so the broken halves were attached perfectly straight. A small whimper came from Celestia's throat as she clawed the ground and bit down on the rock. The silver dragon quickly squirted a thin stream of metal around the bone, ceiling it in place. With the blade of her tail she cut of the rugged edges of the seam before closing the skin back over the bone and ceiling it with another seam of metal.

"There we go. Once we find a healing dragon willing to help you can heal it properly, but for now that should do," said Silver, stepping back and licking the blood off her paws.

Celestia let go of the rock and looked at her wing. The silver seam where the metal had stitched her skin together gleamed slightly. She took a couple of flaps and she beamed, a smile spreading across her face.

"Thankyou! Thankyou so much!" Celestia said with the excitement of a hatchling, flapping both her wings, "How can I ever repay you?"

Silver smiled, "Don't do it again. That'll be enough."

Celestia nodded, marvelling at how well her wing looked now. It was if there hadn't been a break at all, though it was a little heavier. A change she could grow accustomed to easily. Smiling she took into the air, wanting to test out her newly healed wing. The flimsy dragon let out a bungle of joy, flying as high as she could and beginning to circle.

'You said our plan wouldn't work,' said Silver, looking at Krista, wanting to continue their conversation.

'No it won't. Two of your assumptions are wrong,' the mind dragon said, watching Celestia fly around, 'First of all there are human guards outside the main gate, so sneaking out at all would get you captured. And second you assume you will be able to deactivate all the collars at once. While that is possible there is a pass code for that, one you will never be able to guess.'

Silver hesitated. If what he was saying was true then she doubted they would be able to escape at all. Just getting past the gate was impossible. If they didn't have the collars Silver wouldn't hesitate. Defeating humans in a fight was as easy as swishing a claw, but with their collars one look would be the end of it.

'Is that what you wanted to tell me?' she growled mentally, 'To dissuade us from trying, because you know it is impossible.'

'No. I want to help. First of all I know the access code that unlocks the collars,' he said, 'And second, I'm a mind dragon. It would be a simple matter to trick the guards minds into thinking you weren't actually there. Unfortunately I cannot spread my mind throughout the whole base, so after the guards at the front I will be unable to help you any longer.'

Silver studied the mind dragon, confused. It all came back to the fact that he was willingly serving the humans. Everything he was saying could be a trap, one for his own enjoyment when he saw they had failed. Or, he could have turned and was just pretending to be on the human's side.

'I don't trust you,' she said.

'I know. I can read your mind,' sighed Krista, 'Look. Think of it this way. I am the only one that was able to infiltrate the collarless because I am a mind dragon. They couldn't hope to read my mind and they needed someone they could trust. So I allow them to trust me, and do their dirty work, but behind it all I secretly help dragons escape. No one could suspect me because I am part of the collarless group and I keep up a façade of a heartless dragon that follows orders whenever they are sent out. Sometimes I have to do some terrible things, but its worth it if I'm able to free even one dragon from this miserable place.'

She was beginning to understand where the dragon was coming from now. By being in the position he was he had been able to trick other people and dragons into allowing other dragons to escape. All this time he probably could have escaped himself, but he stayed behind to help other dragons escape. Of course the story could all be made up but Silver couldn't help but feel a grudging admiration for the dragon.

'I tell you what. You try escaping tonight with Zepos. If the guards at the gate ignore you as if you aren't there, you know you can trust me and follow the rest of my directions. If not, well, there is really nothing you can do,' he said.

'I guess I have to trust you,' Silver sighed, realising that there conversation had been going for a little longer the necessary, 'Just one last question. Will I be able to form objects with my tail with the collar on?'

'Yes. The collar only picks up if a dragon attempts to use their element around the area it is placed. Since it is around the neck if a dragon tries to breath their element it will zap them. However if you use your tail there shouldn't be a problem, or even your wings,' he said, 'Oh, and I will place the directions you need to go into your mind so you will be able to find the control room easily. It will be night-time so there shouldn't be to many humans through the hallways or even in the control room. But even still make sure you are careful.'

Silver nodded and thanked the dragon. A series of images suddenly flashed through her head. They were directions, leading through the base and into a computer room. A word also flashed before her. Derula. She didn't know what it meant but she assumed it was the password to unlock the collars. She just hoped she would be able to type it down on a human keyboard.

'Did you get it all?' asked Krita.

'Yes.'

'Good, now look chastised. I will need an excuse for having to talk with you for so long.'

Silver nodded and hung her head, dropping her wings. A dangerous snarl came from Krita's maw before he turned and stalked away from her. She was careful to keep up her act until the dragon left, before gathering herself and walking away, back to where Zepos and Eril were waiting. She couldn't help but let out a small smile. Krita was a smart dragon.

That night, around midnight, Silver and Zepos woke from their sleep. She had told her friends of Krista's offer to help. At first they had been very reluctant, but eventually accepted the fact that if the mind dragon didn't help them they would never escape.

The reason Zepos and Silver had been chosen for the mission was because the silver dragoness was the only one that was able to cut through the door at the front and Zepos didn't want to let her get out of his sight. All the other dragons were sleeping soundly on the floor. Some were curled around others, while a few slept by themselves off to the side. They moved as silently as possible. Silver had darkened her shell as much as she could so it didn't glint off any lights in the base.

Krista was sitting atop the collarless dragons' perch. He gave them a small nod as they walked by, but otherwise didn't acknowledge them. Taking a deep breath Silver formed a blade with her tail and looked at the chain that held the door closed. It was a simple device, one that any dragon could break through if they had enough power, but without use of elements it would hold easily.

Silver swung her tail downwards, hard, cutting through the metal bars with a single stroke. Zepos quickly caught them before they fell to the floor and created a noise. He gently lay them down and nodded to Silver. The dragoness smiled at him before pushing open the door slowly. It creaked with angry vengeance, causing both dragons to wince. They quickly looked back over the sleeping dragons, and while some stirred none woke. With a relieved sigh she slowly pushed the door open, allowing just enough room for the two of them to get through. Zepos went first and Silver followed.

They both froze at the sight of two humans standing, back faced to the doorway. They didn't even look at the dragons as they crept out. A strange haze was covering the eyes, making them look like they were in some sought of trance. A small feeling of relief washed over her. They could trust the mind dragon. He had come through in the end.

Zepos looked at her with surprise, and she just grinned and mouthed 'told ya so'. Silver took the lead as they began to make there way through the base and towards freedom.
