"True power comes from within," Wu said, his footsteps detected by Nya's ears as he slowly walked around her in a circle. "It is never truly gone, only lost. One has to seek mental clarity in order to find it again."
Nya inhaled deeply, held her breath for a longer moment, and then exhaled slowly through her lips. Her eyes were closed but she could still feel Wu's presence behind her, next to her, in front of her, all at the same time. Her crisscrossed legs were starting to cramp up which she tried not to pay any attention to.
She used her other senses to pass the time. The hardwood of the Bounty's interior was uncomfortable to be sitting on for a prolonged period of time, and the thin carpet draped over it didn't help. The scent of kimchi filled her nostrils and she knew that Jay was making dinner since that was his favorite meal, all day, any day. He was also the only one liking the Korean cuisine.
"Your powers are not permanently gone, Nya. They are inaccessible but still inside of you." Wu stood up straight in front of her sitting form and gripped his staff tightly. "Place your hand in front of you and activate them, your powers."
Nya extended her right arm and opened her palm. She thought about relaxation, about a bed of flowers, roses, tulips, lilies, about calming walks on the beach at night and a candlelit dinner with the love of her life.
A smile graced her lips when she felt a jolt stir inside of her, starting from her heart and going straight to her fingertips. She opened her eyes, expecting to see a bubble of water hovering above her hand like she had seen countless times in her past, but there was nothing. Her hand was dry. There was nothing in the air but a lonely fly flying past her face with an annoying buzz.
She pursed her lips in frustration but managed to keep the words on the tip of her tongue to herself. Nya was already angry at herself, she didn't need Master Wu to be angry at her as well.
"It is fine," he assured, but Nya could sense the hint of a lie in his tone.
It was not fine. They both knew that.
With six villains on the loose, the ninja needed all the support and help they could get. While having Nya herself back was great, her not possessing her powers was a huge setback for the team. Six working powers were better than five.
"Take a break, Nya. We will try again later."
Nya stood up and felt her cramping legs crack back into place. Without saying a word to her master, she walked out of his quarters and headed for her own room, her face still and expressionless.
Once she opened the door, she was glad nobody was inside. Jay was out making dinner, meaning he had already changed and wouldn't have to come back to their shared bedroom. Nya looked at the time on her nightstand before lying down. She still had about fifteen minutes to herself to think about everything that had happened within the few days the ninja had been reunited.
Between breaking her family out of Krypterium and discovering their next big threat, Nya forgot what it was like to just exist for the sake of existing. Her whole life was before her but her earthly responsibilities brought her down and restricted her from living the life she had always wanted to live.
She closed her eyes and tried to calm herself down.
Jay's voice came from the loudspeaker from the upper corner of the bedroom, telling everyone inside the Bounty from various loudspeakers that dinner would be ready in five minutes.
Nya got out of bed and changed into more comfortable clothes. Then she walked out of the bedroom and made her way to the dining room.
While passing the bathroom, she heard painful grunts and groans coming from inside of it. She stopped. "Hello? Everything okay in there?"
"Yeah, shit," Kai said, hissing.
"Do you need help, Kai?" She placed her hand on the door handle. "Are you covered?"
"Yeah."
Nya opened the door but it was locked, so then Kai unlocked it from the inside. She grimaced when she found him sitting on the closed toilet seat and clutching the right side of his torso, right under his rib cage.
It was obvious he had just gotten out of the shower; his hair was wet and sagging down and his chest was glistening with droplets of water. Luckily, he had managed to put on his boxers and his sweatpants before she walked inside.
"Didn't Zane tell you to be careful?" Nya crouched down to be on eye level with his hand. She told him to remove it, revealing a mess of red smears on both his side and on his hand.
"I was carefully taking a shower, but then I slipped and fell on the edge of the bathtub."
"Did you take off the bandage while showering?"
"No, I just took it off to assess the damage."
Nya tried to examine the wound to the best of her abilities. "It doesn't look too bad. I think the beginning of the stitches were opened, but not so many. Maybe two. I'll get Zane, yeah?"
Kai nodded, his face contorted in agony. Sighing, Nya stepped out of the bathroom and walked over to her previous destination, the dining room, where she was sure Zane would be.
Seeing Kai in pain was a tough pill to swallow, and she would have taken away his pain if she could.
"Stay back!" a police officer shouted, raising his gun and aiming it at Cole. The Earth Ninja fought off another officer and pushed him to the ground before freezing when he saw the gun pointed at him from across the room.
The office was too small to actually fight in, not that that was the plan anyway. The ninja needed to get out, and that quickly. All five of them were fighting off their own sets of officers.
Jay used his powers to shock the officer who was pointing the gun at Cole into unconsciousness—something he was less than proud of and would think about for a longer while later. He despised using his powers against fellow humans, especially people who were only doing their job, but this was not a situation in which he could think about anyone else other than himself and his family. It was what needed to be done.
Kai roundhouse kicked an officer in the head and KO'ed him instantaneously. "Sorry!" he apologized to the body on the floor. While the other people in the room fought, Kai bent down and pressed the tips of his fingers against the officer's neck. He let out a relieved sigh when he felt a clear and rhythmic heartbeat pound against the warm flesh.
Cole pressed his fists together and activated his powers, his veins glowing orange. He looked at the officers in front of him menacingly. "You guys sure you want to approach me?" The officers looked at each other unsurely before looking back at Cole and shaking their heads. "Thought so." Cole chuckled.
Nya kicked an officer in the chest and sent him flying backwards into the wall. Instead of giving up, the officer quickly recovered and tried to lunge forward to take Nya down, but she was faster and more agile. She dodged out of his way with ease and watched as he crashed into Dareth's desk and took it down with him. Everything that was on the desk flew to the floor with him.
Zane disliked the concept of freezing a person's body to the point of immovability but he couldn't calculate another way out of it. While he froze every officer that grazed his path, he kept apologizing profusely. "My apologies. I am deeply sorry for doing this. I am very sorry. Please do not take this the wrong way. I am sorry. I am sorry. The ice should melt within a few hours, so do not worry about your life."
He kept going on until all officers in sight were frozen in their spots, unable to move their bodies to attack the ninja. Kai risked a glance outside around the corner and confirmed there were no more officers.
"Quick, quick, quick!"
He stood there until everyone else was out of the room, first Cole, then Jay, then Nya, then Zane. He was last to exit the room.
But right as he turned his back on the office, an officer managed to pull his arm out of the ice. He pointed the gun at Kai's back and pulled the trigger, but Kai was just turning to the side, so the bullet only grazed the side of his torso as he disappeared into the hallway.
Although the bullet hadn't entered Kai's body, the gash was still large enough for him to require stitches, which Zane had immediately provided him with the moment they had gotten to the Bounty.
It had been a risky decision, but Master Wu, Misako, and Lloyd had picked the ninja up with the Bounty when they had been told about Kai's injury. They had flown over a tall building and collected their friends before escaping back into the endless sky.
Now they were back up in Shintaro. They had decided that staying on their Bounty was a better way for them to stay in one piece, both mentally and physically. It was their second most trusted home, and since their monastery was out of the question, they only had the Bounty left.
After telling Zane about Kai's reopened stitches, Nya sat down at the table and watched as Jay poured her a glass of water. He did the same to Cole and Lloyd before placing the jug on the table and taking a seat next to Nya.
Everyone had a few midsized dumplings on their plates with baked potato and green beans on the side. Only Jay had a portion of kimchi on his plate next to his meal.
After Wu and Misako sat down, they all waited for Zane and Kai to join them. The silence was deafening.
A few minutes later, Kai walked inside the room with Zane right behind him and took a seat next to Cole and across from Jay like he usually would. He cleared his throat to start the conversation everyone dreaded. "So, Dareth betrayed us and Garmadon refuses to cooperate. Any other surprises waiting for us?"
Wu sighed. "I would have thought my brother knew better than that, but it is his decision to be made. We cannot force him to help us."
They picked up their forks and began to eat their food. "Is this a good time to say I never really liked Dareth?" Nya asked, taking a sip of water.
Jay pursed his lips. Even thinking about the fact that Dareth of all people could have caused their downfall was painful. "I knew he liked money, but I would have never thought he would go to such lengths to make a quick buck."
"And we were trying to help him, too," Cole said. "We had every good intention regarding his health but he came and stabbed us in the back."
"And caused Kai's injury," Nya added, spiteful. If it hadn't been for Dareth's betrayal, Kai would have never gotten shot at.
Lloyd looked at his friends expectantly. "Have we figured out where the scroll is yet?"
"No," Zane answered. "I have run several analyses through numerous databases, but none of the CCTV footage I could get my hands on showed Aspheera, let alone the Scroll of Forbidden Spinjitzu."
"Then what do we do now?" Misako asked.
"I am afraid the scroll is our only lead for now," Wu said, sighing.
"Isn't it suspicious how the world hasn't gone down yet?" Cole wondered. "The villains haven't attacked any place yet. They could be anywhere right now."
"That is true," Zane agreed. "It is peculiar how they have not tried to attack us or conquer Ninjago."
"They're planning something," Nya said, glaring down at her food as she stabbed a green bean. "They know they're at an advantage so they want to keep us on our toes."
"We have to be ready for when they decide to make their move," Kai told them.
"My friends." Everyone looked at Zane, who was looking off into the distance with a smile on his face. "I have received an incoming video call from Pixal."
Lloyd smiled. "So she's okay!"
Zane had been trying to reach Pixal for hours, and he hadn't been able to find a trace of her up until now.
He picked up the call, grinning. "Pixal! Where are—"
Zane froze when he realized what he was seeing.
"What's wrong?" Kai asked, but Zane held up his hand in order to shut him up.
He concentrated on the vague imagery on the other side of the call.
It lasted about five seconds before the line was cut off, but that was enough for Zane to understand the urgency of the situation.
"What did you see?" Jay asked.
"I saw them, the villains. I saw Vangelis in the background, talking to Pythor. I couldn't understand what they were saying but they seemed to be in a verbal disagreement. They seemed to be in an underground area based on the lack of daylight. There was a torch attached to the wall, which would further prove my suspicion. Somebody..." Zane shook his head, not wanting to say it out loud but knowing it was too vital of an information. "Somebody was doing something to Pixal."
Nya gasped quietly. "Who? What were they doing?"
"I do not know who, but they were holding a screwdriver and working on Pixal's body. And...and I saw what looked a lot like her leg on the ground, a few feet away from her body."
