01 | imprisoned
"Go faster!"
"I'm already going as fast as I can! Can't you see the line in front of me?!"
"Kai," Lloyd hissed.
The Fire Ninja turned to his friend, the exasperated expression on his face not wearing off. "What, Lloyd?" he asked, his tone daring the younger to speak his mind.
Lloyd sighed, looking behind them. The other inmate was glaring daggers at the back of Kai's head. Even though they had sworn off to any fights inside the prison, the one and only Fire Ninja was apparently having none of that.
"You can go ahead," Lloyd told the older man who then turned to look at him.
Without uttering another word, he walked in front of Lloyd and Kai.
The latter gaped at his teammate's words. "What the hell, Lloyd? Why would you do that?"
"Because," Lloyd emphasized. "We are not here to start any fights, remember?"
Kai rolled his eyes. He watched as the lunch lady dumped some mashed potatoes onto the tray of the person in front of them. He sighed, knowing that that was the fourth day in a row in which his lunch would consist of mashed potatoes, some broccoli that tasted like tap water, and some actual tap water.
As he looked ahead, he saw one last red apple that looked somewhat tasty behind the glass next to the lunch lady. His eyes were glued to the fruit, his mind already imagining the delicious, juicy consistency of the red-colored goodness that he hadn't eaten once after his imprisonment.
But his happiness got crushed when the prisoner in front of him asked for the apple and actually got it.
"Hey! I wanted that!" Kai exclaimed, forgetting that there were other people around as well.
So, everyone in near proximity stopped what they were currently doing to look at what was wrong with the Master of Fire.
Lloyd facepalmed. All he wanted was some lunch, not some drama that could've easily been avoided.
"What was that?" the guy in front of the two ninja asked lowly.
Kai eyed the apple on his tray before glancing back into his brown eyes.
The other male copied his actions, his gaze landing on his apple. Then he let out an amused chuckle. "Oh, this?" he asked as he grabbed the fruit. Holding it up for the Red Ninja to see, he waited for a second before he took a big, crunchy bite out of it while staring at Kai with spite swirling in his eyes.
Before Kai could lunge at the man who started to laugh darkly, Lloyd held him back by his shoulder. "He's not worth it," he whispered to his friend before looking around at the people. "Sorry," he apologized for Kai's actions.
As the man walked away, the two ninja went to stand in front of the lunch lady. They held their trays in front of her and watched as the food that did not look appetizing one bit was dumped onto their plates.
Sighing in sync, they grabbed their glasses of water, put them onto their trays themselves, and walked away.
On their way over to the table that the ninja group shared, they could feel many stares full of hatred and anger thrown after them.
"What was that about?" Cole immediately asked once they sat down.
"Ask Kai," Lloyd said before he grabbed his fork and unwillingly started to eat his food. His face scrunched up at the sour taste, yet he forced himself to shove the concoction down his throat.
Cole and Jay, who were sitting next to each other, then turned Kai.
The Fire Ninja glanced up at them for a second before looking back down at his tray while stabbing the mashed potatoes with his fork and stirring them around on his plate.
"Don't look at me like that," he then finally mumbled, not able to take the stares any longer.
"Kai," Cole said in a warning tone.
"You can't blame me, Cole!" his friend, that was no longer in red, exclaimed quietly. "We're ninja, not criminals. Yes, we might've stolen the Scroll of Forbidden Spinjitzu, and yes, we might've unleashed Aspheera again, but we had good intentions!"
Lloyd sighed. "We know that," he began, "but these people all around us don't. They don't know about our intentions to bring Nya back. They probably think we'd gone bonkers and used the scroll to our own enjoyment or something."
"That is only halfway true," Zane said, his voice devoid of emotion. "The mayor and the new ninja know about our intentions. They were the ones forbidding us to do it legally, and therefore turning us into criminals in the first place."
Kai's face scrunched up. "Don't refer to them as the new ninja, Zane. They don't deserve to get all of our credit that we've worked hard for."
"But they have defeated us," the Ice Ninja pointed out, blinking.
"Just don't say it!" Kai hissed.
"We'll just have to make the best of it," Lloyd said to the group. "We've already survived in here for two weeks, we only have 1811 days to go."
Everyone slowly turned to him, their eyes intensely staring at their Green Ninja.
"Is that supposed to make us feel better?" Cole asked him.
Lloyd shrugged. "Do whatever you want with that info, I just told you the bitter truth."
That caused Cole and Kai to groan out in frustration.
"How 'bout you eat your food, Lloyd?" Kai glared at him until his gaze made Lloyd feel uncomfortable so that he started eating.
"Anyway." Cole sighed. "Obviously I'm happy we got Nya back, but what difference does it make now that we're here in prison?"
"She's not water anymore. That's good enough, Cole," Lloyd answered.
"Yes, but we will be here for five years, Lloyd. We're basically wasting our time and a part of our lives that we'll never be able to get back."
"Would you shut up, Cole?" Jay gritted out, glaring at his best friend.
The others looked at him with wide eyes. The Blue Ninja hadn't opened his mouth once ever since they had entered the prison, so the fact that he just now decided to speak was quite shocking. Especially the words he chose to utter.
"We've got Nya back, that's all that matters. I don't care if I'll be here for five years or fifty, all I care about is that the person who has sacrificed herself for us is back in our lives," Jay told them all before he went back to look down at his food.
"Jay's right," Kai agreed. He knew how sensitive the topic of his girlfriend was for Jay, so it was better to at least close the topic before it got out of hand.
Jay was like a ticking time bomb at that point. He was quietly listening and observing, only participating when he felt like it.
One wrong word, and he could explode.
"Let's move on," Lloyd suggested, sensing the air tensing up the second Nya was talked about.
"Yeah." Kai nodded. "Let's talk about when and how we're gonna break out of his place."
Lloyd gaped at him. "We are definitely not doing that," he told him sternly.
The Fire Ninja glanced at him lazily. "You didn't really think I would actually spend five years in here, right?" When Lloyd stayed silent, Kai rolled his eyes. "Well, I'm not. So, any plans? Suggestions? Strategies?"
"I would advise not to talk about that in here, Kai. The guard over there is looking at you like he wants to rip your head off," Zane's robotic voice said. He pointed at a guard at the other side of the dining hall with his eyes which the others quickly copied.
And indeed, there was a male guard looking at the Red Ninja intently from the other side of the room. He was saying something into his walkie-talkie but the ninja couldn't hear him over the loud conversations all around them.
Kai looked back at the others. "Do you think he heard me?" he whispered, his voice sounding a bit panicked.
"I'm not sure," Lloyd dragged out, glancing back at the guard. His eyes widened. "He's coming over here," he hissed quietly.
The others quickly went back to eating their food while avoiding eye contact with each other as well as with the guard.
"Ninja," his deep voice called out. The guys looked up to see him right in front of their table. The guard looked at their food. "I would suggest you eat your meal now before I have to put you back into your cell."
"What?" Cole exclaimed. "But we have the right to eat here like everyone else!"
"I'm afraid not. You're... special cases."
Lloyd rolled his eyes. Of course they were treated differently because of their powers. They had been wearing vengestone bracelets and ankle shackles ever since they had stepped a foot into Krypterium, yet they were still not seen on the same level as other felons.
"Just say that you're discriminating against Elemental Masters," Kai huffed, crossing his arms.
The guard glanced back at him lazily. "We are not discriminating you, we are simply following orders of Mayor Trustable. I'm sorry for the inconvenience, but there's nothing I can do about that. Now, please follow me."
The walk back to their cell didn't take very long, it was literally only a few feet away since the dining hall was just in the center of the circular prison complex.
After they entered their cell, they watched as the prison guard locked the door again and left right afterwards.
All the five ninja could do was watch as the villains they had once imprisoned had more rights inside of the prison than themselves.
