REMUS

The revelation had left him speechless. He stood there at the door with a rigid expressionless face as James and Sirius told him about their little adventure. Of course they didn't understand why he was so shocked, scared even. But when they were done Remus wordlessly walked up to his bed, changed into his pajamas and collapsed between the sheets.

That night Remus laid awake in his four poster with the hangings down, shaking underneath the covers as he contemplated what he had been told. James and Sirius, his two best friends, had sneaked past the Whomping Willow and seen a glimpse of the lie that was the Shrieking Shack.

He trembled thinking what would have happened if they had gone there during a full moon night, when it wasn't as empty as they found it to be. Every time he closed his eyes a picture of James and Sirius quivering in front of a giant vicious wolf with Remus's green eyes haunted him. They could've died, and they probably would if Remus didn't do anything. If they had snuck past the tree once, there was nothing stopping them from doing it again.

His heart was heavy with so many emotions. He felt scared, confused, worried but what weighed his heart the most was betrayal. James and Sirius had broken their promise, obviously Remus wasn't as important to them as they were to Remus.

But he had to make sure they didn't go there again. If they ever, by any chance, wandered into the shack while Remus was spending the night, he knew they wouldn't come back. He dug his face into his pillow scared, he didn't want to kill his friend- even if it would be the wolf doing it, even if they had broken their promise, he didn't want James and Sirius to die. He shouldn't have come here- to study at Hogwarts. Being homeschool didn't sound as bad anymore, not when his friends' lives were at risk.

It was almost morning when he got out of bed and put on his robes. Outside the windows, the sky was painted a faint shade of red, the lazily rising winter sun hid behind grey clouds as if dreading what was to come. Remus knew what he had to do and he didn't want to wait. He also knew that they would hate him for this, but he was left with no other choice.

As he crept out of the portrait hole, Remus wondered if he should also mention Peter. After all, Peter now knew about the shack. But then again, Peter never seemed to do anything by himself; he was more of a follower. Stopping James and Sirius would be enough.

He got his wand out and murmured "Lumos!" The tip of his wand lit up, illuminating the dark corridors which felt quite sinister that winter morning as he walked on. He wondered if this would end his friendship with James and Sirius. Even if it would, he seemed to be left with no other option.

Remus was just about to reach the first floor landing when he ran into Professor McGonagall. "Mr Lupin," she said baffled. "What-"

"Professor!" he said. She probably heard the anxiousness in his voice as she ignored the fact that he had interrupted her midsentence and looked at him expectantly.

"Professor, I need to tell you something."

A/N: Will he really do it? Either way, James and Sirius's lives are about to get a lot more interesting the next morning.
