JAMES

"All set?" Peter asked, as James caught up to him, Sirius and Remus on their way to the Quidditch field amidst the excitedly chattering crowd. James gave him a thumbs up.

"Just delivered the package," he excitedly whispered, though unnecessarily, as no one would have really heard him in all the noise.

"You know," said Remus thoughtfully, "I'll be surprised if we manage to pull it off. There's so many things that could go wrong. What if the refilling charm wore off? Will it all vanish?"

"Oh we trust your wand Remus, its time you trusted it too," Sirius assured Remus.

"I'm just saying- what if he-"

"Let's just focus on today's match for now, we'll get to know if it worked or not eventually," said James and increased his pace.

They found seats on the topmost row of the stands, right next to the commentator's box and sat down excitedly, waiting for the match to begin. By the time Coach Spinnet blew his whistle, James and Peter were consumed deeply in their discussion about that year's Quidditch World Cup. Sirius, to the annoyance of a Slytherin sitting on it, had his feet propped up on the seat directly in front of him and Remus was talking to a girl James didn't know but had seen sitting on the Slytherin table.

"And they're off!" boomed the commentator Thomas Gemstrode, a Slytherin third year, as the fourteen players, half wearing Gryffindor's scarlet and half Slytherin's green robes zoomed off into the sky with Coach Spinnet trailing behind them.

"And the Quaffle is taken immediately by Edward Earhart of Slytherin, good work there mate. Earhart passes to Hackleback, Hackleback to Duckworth- the Slytherin players as usual look in good form. Duckworth passes back to Earha- NO! Quaffle in Gryffindor possession now and Mark Mason zooms away with it and- damn! Good work there by the Slytherin beater Avery. Man, that's gotta hurt! Quaffle back with Earhart, and he's hurtling across the field, some amazing flying by the Slytherin chaser. And he's going to score- DO IT EDWARD! AND- oh no! Jason Mathews saves the goal- and on sheer luck, I say."

While almost a third of the stadium cheered, the Gryffindors sitting around James booed at the commentator.

"I say it like I see it, guys," Gemstrode retorted at the crowd. "And Gryffindor in possession. Chaser what's-her-name of Gryffindor with the Quaffle-"

Someone from the Gryffindor house threw an empty bottle of butterbeer at Gemstrode at this point and half the stands erupted in cheers. He swore and cussed at the Gryffindor crowd and James and the others got so busy watching Professor McGonagall shouting at the top of her voice to bring back order, while Thomas Gemstrode ran amok among the crowd of Gryffindors, still carrying his magical megaphone and swearing so loudly that he barely needed it, that they didn't even notice Emmalyn Hood, a Gryffindor chaser, put a well-aimed Quaffle through the Slytherin hoop.

It was only when Professor McGonagall managed to snatch the megaphone away from Thomas and shout "Ten-zero to Gryffindor!" in it that everyone's attention was pulled back towards the field and three quarters of the crowd donning Gryffindor's scarlet erupted in mad banshee cheers.

The game was at thirty-ten, with Gryffindor in lead when Thomas Gemstrode finally calmed down enough to continue the commentary, though to Professor McGonagall's annoyance, he still swore a lot at the Gryffindors in the crowd and gave a highly biased overview of the game.

"That's Hestia Jones of Gryffindor speeding off towards the goal posts, but she's blocked by a Bludger from Jasper Montague. As I said earlier- Gryffindors play on sheer luck- and Earhart in possession- he's dashing towards the goalposts now and man can that guy fly. Look at him go! I hope the Gryffindor players are taking notes- they seriously need it-"

"Mr. Gemstrode! Concentrate on the game!" Professor McGonagall shrieked.

"Just making a mere observation, Professor. He passes to Duckworth and Duckworth to Hackleback- he's gonna do it! And he's DONE IT! An exemplary goal by the Slytherin chaser as Jason Mathews the Gryffindor keeper shuffles idiotically about his goalpost."

The Slytherins all roared and cheered as Arnold Hackleback, their chaser, took a round around the stands whooping and punching the air as he went.

"We're losing our lead. We're losing our lead," muttered Peter next to James.

The score was ninety to forty, with Gryffindor on lead as Frank Derrick, the Gryffindor seeker, missed the golden snitch a third time.

"He's even worse than I thought!" said James exasperated. "How the hell did he make it on the team?"

And with another goal, the Slytherins brought the score down to ninety-fifty. The groans and boos of the Gryffindors were drowsed by the roaring Slytherins. The Slytherin seeker Ariadne Goldstein, meanwhile, was soaring above everyone else, her eyes searching madly for the tiniest sight of glittering gold.

"Gryffindor in possession," Gemstrode was saying, "chaser Mark Mason ducks two Bludgers and damn! Good throw Montague!" For Jasper Montague had chucked his bat at Mark and it hit him straight in the shoulder. A roar of rage bellowed from the crowd bellow and Coach Spinnet blew his whistle.

"Oh it was just a bat!" Thomas Gemstrode was now trying to defend the Slytherin beater and was bent almost double as Professor McGonagall tried to snatch the megaphone away from him again. "Anyone could've dodged it. It probably just slipped outta Jasper's hand. And- and-" he struggled now jumping over seats as Professor McGonagall threatened him with detention "-I'll bet Mason came under its way on purpose! Way to win a penalty for you team, I'd say!"

At this point Mark put the Quaffle through the Slytherin hoop, no problem and Professor McGonagall finally snatched the megaphone away from Gemstrode.

"Gryffindor hundred and Slytherin fifty," she said haughtily into the megaphone.

After that Professor McGonagall absolutely refused to give the megaphone back to Gemstrode and the score reached a hundred and fifty to eighty with Gryffindor in lead when Professor Slughorn finally convinced her to let Thomas commentate again.

"Gryffindor in possession. Hestia Jones with the Quaffle- she passes it to Mason and he's zooming through the ground- passes to Hood- SAVE IT MALFOY! And he's done it! An admirable save by the Slytherin keeper Lucius Malfoy and Slytherin in possession. Hackleback with the Quaffle and he dodges a Bludger and OUCH!"

Joe Grace, the Gryffindor beater had hit Hackleback at the back of the head with a well-aimed Bludger and the Slytherin Chaser immediately keeled over his broomstick, falling towards the ground, but was caught in time by Coach Spinnet who delivered him to safety after blowing his whistle for time out.

The match continued again after five minutes but Arnold Hackleback was not fit to continue playing and the Slytherins with only two Chaser were having a hard time scoring while the Gryffindor team took complete advantage of the situation. It seemed as though Captain Mark Mason had planned the whole thing out in the five minute break. The Gryffindor Beaters seemed to have forgotten the Bludgers completely and were spending all of their time and energy blocking the Slytherin Beaters and in their absence the Gryffindor Chasers were flying free and easy, busy putting the Quaffle through the Slytherin hoops again and again.

"Two-forty to hundred and Gryffindor in possession." Gemstrode said sulkily. Mason to Hood... Hood to Seinfeld... back to Mason and-"

The whole crowd gasped at this moment. Nobody was looking at Mark as he put the Quaffle through the hoop and caught it on the other side to put it in again because everybody's, even Lucius Malfoy's, eyes were peeled on Ariadne Goldstein who had dived suddenly, her hands stretched out, speeding towards the ground as everyone in the stands held their breath. She made a wild snatch at the tiny little golden ball that was the Snitch and the stands erupted with the cheers of Slytherins as Coach Spinnet blew his whistle.

"Gryffindor wins!" he announced to the roaring crowd and soon there was utter confusion as both the teams whooped and celebrated on the ground. Emmalyn Hood downright broke down in tears of joy as she hugged Jason Mathews.  Ariadne Goldstein was having a hard time keeping her legs on the ground, quite literary because the Slytherin team had lifted her on their shoulders.

Before long, the entire school was on the ground celebrating and cheering and the members of both the teams were lifted on shoulders as Coach Spinnet shouted again "Gryffindor won!" to the chaos but no one really heard him.

It was only when Professor McGonagall shouted "Final score- Slytherin Two hundred and fifty, Gryffindor- two hundred and sixty! Gryffindor wins!" into the megaphone that all of a sudden the entire Slytherin House burst into protest and rounded up on Coach Spinnet who quite fiercely explained to them that Mark scored twice before the Snitch was caught, making Gryffindor the undisputed victor of the match.
