The Show Must Go On
Everyone was bustling around preparing for the annual school play. This year, the sixth-grade students were tasked to produce and act in the play Rapunzel.
The teacher-in-charge, Mr. Flynnagan, was the most excited of all. While he was happy, the students weren't as so. Lilly, in particular, was quite glum even after she had been chosen to play the lead role as Rapunzel. She didn't see it as an opportunity to shine as many other kids would. She saw it as a stereotypical story that was not the true embodiment of a woman's capabilities. She had already complained to everyone by the time the first week of rehearsals were over.
"Why can't we reverse the play? The girl can save the guy. It can be a modern retelling." Lilly argued. Anne had already enough of Lilly's protests. Anne had wanted to be the lead before it went to Lilly.
"Just let me play Rapunzel and you can stop complaining." Anne answered back. She crossed her arms and pouted when Mr. Flynnagan ordered that no one is allowed to switch roles.
"Wouldn't help. I want to change the story, not my character." Lilly countered. Everyone already believed at that point that the play would be a disaster. It was at that moment that Lilly thought of a plan.
At the end of the final rehearsal, Lilly pulled everyone aside after Mr. Flynnagan left. "I have a way to spice up the play." Lilly whispered and everyone listened closely.
The day of the performance arrived. Everyone was backstage getting ready except for Lilly and Anne. They had something else to do first.
"Mr. Flynnagan! We need your help. We need to get some things from the supply room and we cannot reach it." Lilly asked faking sweetness. Mr. Flynnagan grumbled before leading the way. Lilly and Anne high-fived behind his back and hid their laughter.
"What do you need girls?" Mr. Flynnagan asked while inside the supply room. The girl closed the door abruptly and locking Mr. Flynnagan inside.
"Don't worry, we will let you out after the play. We left food and juice inside as well as a television screen that will live stream the play." Anne said. The girls then skipped backstage to finish getting ready.
The show went on without any hitches. It was an amazing retelling of Rapunzel where she saves herself using her hair to let her out of the tower. She ends up donating her long hair to the poor to make into wigs and sell. Anne was happy to play the lead while Lilly just stayed backstage admiring her masterpiece.
As they said, the girls let Mr. Flynnagan out of the supply room when the play ended. He didn't seem mad at their actions after watching the play on a live stream. He just congratulated them on their success before announcing the whole class will get a pizza party. Everyone cheered because of Lilly's great idea, they got a pizza party.
