The Wolf | Chapter Seven
Mia woke up with screams racking her chest. Her heart was hammering against her ribcage. She tried to move but pain shot through her entire body and she remembered.
She heard a voice but it was far off. She tried to control her breathing but it was impossible. At this point, she was gasping for breath, trying anything to get air back in her lungs. She was going to die. This was it. Suddenly, she felt a hand in her hair. She tried to focus on it, but she couldn't.
"Breathe, Mia," she heard. Not knowing who it was or why they cared and barely being able to hear the words, she obeyed. Or, at least she tried to. She took a shallow breath. Again, and again, and again. Until, finally, she could see and think and breathe.
"Oh my gosh, you can't do that to me ever again." Without any warning or hesitation, he threw his arms around her and hugged her tightly. "You worried me so freaking much, you idiot."
Mia tried for a smile but it didn't seem to work. She was still shaking slightly and knew she was only held together by Bl—Buzzkill. "O-oh, I'm t-the id-idiot?" she asked shakily. "I w-won," she told him, trying to joke. "You called me Mia."
Blake's forehead was creased as he pulled away from her to look into her eyes but a smile glimmered on his face, showing his adora- weird dimples. "Whatever, you called me Blake that one time. This just means we're even," he argued.
"That's a stupid excuse," she told him.
"It's a fine excuse. You just want a reason to win because you're petty," he said in a snobby voice.
"I am not petty!" she fought, glaring at him as best she could.
"Yeah, you kinda are," he told her, with a shrug. "It's not your fault. You were born that way."
Mia rolled her eyes. "And I'm the petty one."
"What's that supposed to mean!?"
"Oh, I don't know," she told him, rolling her eyes and trying to hide a yawn.
"Hey, you should go back to sleep if you're tired," he told her, a small smile on his face.
"I don't want to sleep, though. If I go back to sleep..."
"You're scared that you'll have nightmares," Buzzkill finished.
Mia nodded weakly. Blake ran his hand through his hair and, even though she did try, she couldn't help but notice how adorable he was.
"I'll be right here," he told her.
Mia closed her eyes and braced herself for her next few words. "Could you... could you hold me... while I sleep?"
Blake smiled and nodded before standing up and getting into the small bed with her. She laid her head on his chest and braced herself for what might come when she was asleep, and soon enough, she was.
✧✧✧
Mia opened her eyes slowly, the light coming from the window blinding her as she woke. She felt an arm wrapping around her waist and sighed. "Thank you," she whispered, quiet enough so that even if he was awake, he wouldn't have been able to hear her.
Her night certainly hadn't been restful, even after Blake had come, but the nightmares hadn't been nearly as intense, and she had a feeling that it was thanks to Blake.
Mia closed her eyes and took a deep breath, thinking of how grateful she was that Blake had stayed and that it was a Friday. If it hadn't been a weekend, she knew that Mr. Payson would never have let Blake stay. What would she do during the weekdays though? How would she ever be able to go to sleep?
Mia felt a silent tear fall down her cheek and she cursed herself. She wiped it off slowly, careful not to wake up Buzzkill. Well, at least she tried.
"Hey," he said groggily before actually looking at her. His expression quickly changed to worry. "You okay?" he asked.
Mia plastered the best smile she could onto her face, hoping it would be enough to convince him as she nodded. "I'm fine."
"Wow, you have no skill in fake happiness whatsoever. I mean, seriously 'I'm fine.' That's the obvious answer. I mean, who says they're fine when they're actually fine. You should say, 'I'm okay' or 'I'm great' or 'Buzzkill's totally awesome.' Those would all be adequate responses."
"Mmm, I keep that in mind next time," she told him with a serious tone, nodding her head reverently.
"But seriously, what's going on in your head?" he asked genuinely.
Mia groaned. She'd hoped he would just ignore that but no. He always just had to care about her wellbeing. Ugh, so annoying. "Really, Buzzkill's totally awesome," she joked, trying for a laugh.
Blake didn't smile. "What happened, Mia?"
"Ha! You did it again! That's twice! You may have used that lame excuse before but you can't use it now! Ha!"
"Wild Side, stop avoiding the question. What. Is. Wrong?"
Mia sighed. She thought about lying and saying that something else was wrong but she was never any good at lying. The only thing to do was avoid it. Even more.
"I'm tired. I think I'm gonna go back to sleep. I'll see you later." She laid her head back on her pillow, also known as Blake's shoulder, and closed her eyes.
"Mia!" he raised his voice slightly and shook her. "I don't know what's wrong but I want to help. Please, just tell me."
Mia sighed and looked up and then sighed again because she'd seen his puppy eyes and couldn't deal with it. She gave in.
"Fine. I just, I'm really scared about everything. Especially the nightmares. What am I going to do when you have to go home for the week days? I can't deal with these on my own. I can't do it, Blake." She didn't know when it had started - undoubtedly at some point during her confession - but tears were now streaming down her face at a steady pace.
Blake didn't say anything. He just wrapped his arms around her and hugged her tightly against his chest.
"I wish I could say that I understood. I wish I knew what you were going through. But I just don't. But just because I don't understand, that doesn't mean I won't always be there for you. You can talk to me whenever you want. I'm your friend. You don't have to hide things from me."
Mia didn't know what to say so she didn't say anything. She just let herself fall apart in his arms, wishing she didn't have to deal with reality.
✧✧✧
Mia felt the satisfying clicking sounds as she typed away at her keyboard, hoping to find an answer to all, or at least some, of her questions. She'd asked her dad to bring her her computer a few days ago but hadn't gotten around to using it, especially because of how much sleep she needed and how much school she had to catch up on.
Mia took a deep breath before making a new document so that she could make a list of her questions.
Who attacked me (that one would take a while)
Why did they attack me
How did they find me
Did they know I had abilities
What are the animal creatures
Do they have any weaknesses
Are there more animal creatures than just those four
Has anyone in the past ever had the same ability as me
If so, are any still alive
Then she got to work.
✧✧✧
Over the next two hours, Mia was able to answer at least some of her questions. According to google, about five years ago there was a young male superhero who died fighting the same octopus she had seen earlier. Nobody knew the boy's identity but he went by the name Blaze. He had the ability to control fire, teleport, and glamouring, which was the ability to change appearance. There were other superheroes too, but very few survived and none of their identities were known. Perhaps that should have disheartened Mia, but it only made her want to destroy those things more.. She also found out that the animal creatures went by the title "enamitala's" and that there had been none but those same four for the past twenty years.
She was about to start searching for her attackers when Buzzkill came in. "Hey," he greeted.
"Wait, what time is it?" she asked, knowing she started at around 11:00.
"Uhh, 4:00."
"Wow. I've been working for like five hours without a break."
"Well, it looks like I arrived just in time."
"Just in time!? You got here like three hours late! In case you weren't aware, I normally take a break every two hours but thanks to your laziness, I had to go five hours without a break! And you call yourself my friend," Mia muttered.
Blake rolled his eyes. "Well, you don't get a break now. We've got homework. And we need to do it now or we'll forget."
"Hey, that reminds me, how are Sarah and Damian doing?" she asked, remembering the freshman they had been tutoring together.
"They're good. It's harder tutoring alone. Especially since you're the smart one. Sarah got a B+ on her History test and Damian got an A- on his Algebra test."
"That's awesome! The next time you see them, tell them I say congratulations!"
"I will. But you need to get back soon so you can tell them yourselves. Otherwise, I'll fight you, got it!?"
"You're such a loser, Buzzkill. You really don't have any friends but me. Hehe."
✧✧✧
The rest of the week went by basically the same. Mia sat around, researching old superheroes and trying to find her attackers. But now it was Saturday night and Buzzkill sat in the bed next to her, arguing about Spiderman and managing to be both extremely annoying and kind of ador-, nevermind. He was just annoying.
"I'm just saying, Toby Macguire was a way better Spiderman!"
"But he's not! Tom Holland is way more amazing!"
"Technically, that title goes to Andrew Garfield..."
Mia burst out laughing. "I guess that's true," she admitted, turning so she could see him better and slightly wincing. The pain had gone down thanks to the beauty of painkillers and the fact that she was healing slowly, but it was still there. She ignored it though, as she looked into Buzzkill's eyes. His beautiful, enticing, perfect, dark green eyes. She felt butterflies fill her stomach as she looked into his eyes. Mia's senses seemed to have disappeared as she looked into his eyes. He started leaning forward and, unable to stop herself, she leaned forward too.
Their lips were just about to meet but, thankfully, Mia was able to stop it. She cleared her throat and leaned away from him. He looked really awkward and kind of, weirdly sad. But why would anyone be sad because of not kissing her? She was just... Mia. A loser. A nobody. A worthless, loser, nobody.
✧✧✧
Mia woke up to some sort of clawing and felt her heart immediately start pounding when she saw what was going on. An enamitala had climbed through the window. The wolf. She shook Blake awake which hurt her more than she'd like to admit. Her painkillers must've been wearing off.
Blake's eyes opened before immediately widening as he looked at the wolf. "Crap," he said, which pretty much summed it up.
He hopped out of the bed and, for a minute, she thought he was going to leave him and felt a breath of relief rush through her. At least he'd be safe. But no. He was just too darn stubborn. Too much of a goody goody. Why couldn't he just be selfish. She knew the wolf only wanted her. She was the one with the powers. But he didn't. He walked over to her side of the bed and picked her up bridal style before rushing out the door. For a supposedly 24/7 hospital, it was surprisingly empty. Nobody was around to help and Mia had to wonder, what if that was part of it's plan? What if it knew?
She didn't have time to wonder because soon, she could hear the familiar growls as they ran down corridors. The movement made Mia grit her teeth but she couldn't let the pain get to her. She needed to focus. Taking a deep, wobbly breath, she looked behind her. Immediately, she regretted it. The wolf was less than fifteen feet away from them and gaining fast.
"Blake! You need to go ahead of me! I'll be fine! I have my lightning but you don't! You need to get out of here and I am clearly slowing you down!"
"No!" he told her firmly. "No way am I leaving you!"
"Don't be the hero now! You need to save yourself!"
"No! Drop it! I'm not leaving so shut up!"
"Blake! I'm begging you, leave me behind. I need you to stay safe. I need you," she told him, tears falling down her face.
Blake fell to his knees, setting her down in front of him before grabbing her face in his soft hands, and kissing her.
The world seemed to stop around her and, for those few seconds, it felt like she was actually safe. And then he pulled away. The look in his eyes was firm. "I'm not leaving you."
Mia felt a tear fall down her face.
There wasn't anything else to do.
Mia took all of her emotions, the sad and the happy, and felt the lightning course through her body as she stood up. The pain had lessened considerably but standing up was still almost impossible. Blake stood up behind her. "Mia, what are you doing?"
The wolf had stopped about five feet away from them and was growling angrily, as if he knew what was coming and was just waiting for her.
She kissed him gently. "I'm saving you."
A/N I've said this before, but if even one person comments that they want the next chapter I will put it up. Otherwise, I won't put it up until I'm done with the next chapter (chapter nine). Anyway, that's about it. Byeeeee
