Chapter Eight

Fionna woke up the next morning when a loud noise came from Marshall's room. Shortly after, he shuffled out in nothing but boxers and started making coffee, still half asleep.

Fionna sat down at the kitchen table as Marshall poured himself a big cup of coffee, as strong as he could make it.

When he was finally fully awake, he jumped at the sight of her. "You're still here."

"Yeah... you weren't kidding about not sleeping, huh?"

He laughed. "Let's just say, I don't sleep as much as I should, and it catches up with me every night. Why do you think I had to set that alarm?"

She smiled, and then he put down his coffee. "Fionna, why do you trust me?"

"What do you mean?"

"You took off your mask. How did you know it was me?"

"I figured it out ages ago. No one else has your eye color. But you didn't seem that surprised either."

"Mm... no one else talks about my need for attention." Marshall said.

She shrugged, but didn't respond. He raised an eyebrow. "Well?"

She shrugged again. "I don't mean it in a bad way. It's just a fact."

"It wasn't a fact before." He grumbled.

She smiled sadly. "I never said that I fell in love with a perfect being, Marshall. And frankly, I like you better for all of your flaws. They make you more human."

"I'm not human." He explained. "At least, not fully. That's where I get my powers from. Didn't I tell you?"

She nodded. "You did."

"Yeah... so what's your story?"

"Excuse me?"

He raised an eyebrow. "The first time we met, you fell off of power wires and landed without a scratch. I'm pretty sure when you tossed that murderer into the lamp-post, it bent a little bit. You can survive large impacts and you are abnormally strong. You're not a normal human either."

She shifted uncomfortably. "I don't know what you mean."

"...oh my God, you're serious right now. You really don't know, do you?"

She shook her head, and he sighed. "Okay, well first things first, you're not normal. But that's okay, because we can be not normal together."

"I consider you to be normal. Sure, you're not completely human, but that doesn't matter."

He grinned. "And I run around every night with a masked superheroine, so my sense of normal is skewed."

"We're each other's normal, though." She grinned.

He smiled softly. "So, do you want some coffee?"

"Um... sure."

"Okay. Fair warning, I brew it so strong it can awaken a tranquilized elephant." He smirked.

"You have creamer and stuff though, right?" She asked.

He shook his head. "Never needed it."

"Um... Marshall? I'll take a rain check on the coffee, okay?"

"That's probably wise. I'm not completely sure what's in it." He chuckled. "But hey, I can give you food that wasn't acquired under suspicious circumstances."

She laughed. "I'm a little worried about your standards of quality then."

"Heh, think of it this way. I make coffee like this way because it's better than giving myself electric shocks and chewing glass, but everybody needs to eat, right?"

"Yeah. You sleep super deeply, Marshall."

He leaned forward. "What, you're gonna kiss me to wake me up?"

"I wouldn't mind." Fionna admitted.

"Mm... probably a nicer wake up than this." He agreed, holding up his coffee cup. Then he smiled at her slyly. "Wanna try it out?"

"But you're awake already." She replied.

"I can take a cat nap, especially if you're there." He purred.

She looked apprehensive. "Are we really at that point yet?"

He drew back. "No. We're not, you're right. Not that I don't want to, but I'm not going to take advantage of you while you're injured."

She reached up for her bandages, before nodding.

"But you can stay here." He continued. "I can loan you some clothes."

"You have girl's clothes in my size here?" She asked skeptically.

He smirked. "I meant you could wear some of my clothes."

"Wait, before I change or anything, I have to call my sister. She's probably worried sick."

Marshall handed her his cell phone. "Go nuts."

He watched calmly as she got into an argument with her sister over the phone, before finally hanging up.

"Sorry about that. Thanks for loaning me your phone."

"What was that about?"

"She got worried because I didn't come home, and because I'm still not home. And she wanted me to leave..."

Marshall's heart started pounding in his chest. "And, you said no, right?"

"Yeah. I did. I don't think that she likes you very much though."

"Not many people do." He grinned. "But we have the day all to ourselves. No classes. No Gumbutt. No family members. Just us."

She kissed him gently, and he smiled back, nuzzling her cheek. "Let's get you out of those bloody clothes and change your bandages, okay?"

Marshall rested with his head on top of Fionna's, with her on his lap and his hands wrapped securely around her waist. Both of them had gotten changed— he had put on pants, and she was now wearing one of his shirts.

"I still can't believe you want to play video games." Marshall mumbled into her ear.

"Are you kidding? I love video games!" She grinned.

He grinned back and started blasting her player.

She bit her lip in concentration and started attacking him harder. "You know we'd probably get farther if we teamed up."

He raised an eyebrow. "I'm not sure if this game works that way."

"No, I meant in real life."

"I'm not cut out for being a sidekick."

"That's not what I meant, Marshall."

He fell silent, before growling, "Did you just come here to try and bring me over to your side? Is that all this is to you?"

"Of course not!"

"And you're not trying to stop me?"

"Not right now! I just wanted to play video games with you!"

"How can I trust a word that you say, Fionna? You're my enemy. You're trying to stop me. So if you really want to gain my trust, I think you should join me."

"I can't do that, Marshall. You know that! I have a duty to the city, to the people, to protect them!"

They both rose off of the sofa, and she stumbled over his uneven floor, falling into his arms, her bandage falling over her eyes.

"You are the most dangerous person in the world to me." He murmured, as she fixed her bandage. "And a large part of that comes from the fact that you mean more than anyone else to me, but I can't trust a word you say." Then he pulled her close, before kissing her hard.

"I think you should go." He breathed.

"I think you should stop sending me mixed signals, but fine. You have my phone number, call me when you make up your mind." Fionna huffed.
