Chapter Nineteen

The city outskirts was thoroughly ransacked, and abandoned as the convoy continued slowly towards the looming wall ahead. Few houses were even standing now, black marks scorching their sides and covering the remains of others.

"Seems like something went down." A voice over the radio crackled slightly as they passed a van flipped on its side.

Even the horses were skittish now, bodies were piled haphazardly near the van, but inside a single Rotter banged on the window harmlessly. Bree and Brent both gaped a bit as they approached the fence outside of the wall; scores of Rotters roamed freely inside, all dressed in military regalia.

"Don't think anyone would try..." She whispered to him.

He nodded, and then spoke, "If they did.... they're dead now."

They stopped at the edge of the fence, the horses barely being kept calm as they piled out slowly. Everywhere they were glancing around, the Rotters only separated by a measly fence.

"There has to be close to a hundred in there that we can see." Bree said quietly to Micheal and Brent who joined her near the fence.

They remained silent as the Rotters came closer, the fence already starting to lean before a plan of action was made.

"What do we do?" Bree scanned the fence line, the only noise audible the moans of the undead.

"Knives out, keep the fence up, and spread men out along it, have a few with guns ready to watch their backs as they take a out the Rotters through the fence." Brent was already reaching for his knife as he spoke, his voice barely surpassing that of the garbled sounds ahead.

The group now stood collectively together, more determined and confident than before as they refurbished themselves with what was left behind.

"Clearing the fence was easier than expected, but also longer. Which means we are hard pressed for a way into the quarantine zone at any costs. There is more undead inside, and even though we are armed tooth and nail we will still loose people if we don't act accordingly." Brent again took the role of leader; being advised from Bree and Micheal as they stood together, "We break up into four groups. Group one is tasked with clearing the area we enter from, and then staying behind. Groups two, three, and four will push farther in."

Mumbles in the crowd followed suit before Bree took up speaking, "From there, Group two will push forward to clear the next road way with Group three following closely behind them. Group four will be tasked with making sure the rear is still clear, and we are not trapped."

Micheal then took up the next part, "As we push deeper in and make more noise more Rotters will appear. This is why it is important than we make as little noise as possible, and use melee before resorting to guns. It will save bullets for any hordes, and reduce the likelihood of getting caught in one."

"Now." Brent started again, eyes unwavering from the crowd, "We find a way in."

A highway only filled with Rotters covered the landscape, trapped on a bridge that crossed a lake. A Jeep cut across the landscape, and left behind a bloody trail in its wake. Anything ahead of it fell, torn, ripped apart, and killed as Markus tightened his grip on the wheel.

"Blasted hordes..." He muttered as a body flipped over the windshield, smearing more blood across it.

Flipping the wipers on, they barely cleaned it off before another body was smashed against it. A slur left his mouth as the wipers were ripped off with the body. He cleared the bridge soon enough though his aggravation was evident as he purposely hit the next twenty Rotters that lumbered onto the now clear highway.

As Markus drove, he pulled a radio from the Jeep's dash, "This is Markus, send all teams to the quarantine zone. We're taking it back, and disposing of anyone who is deemed hostile. Rules of Engagement: Shoot on Sight."

Dropping the radio and gripping the wheel with both hands again, a grim face formed into a small smile as voices replied to him over the radio.

"Yes, sir. Glad to see we are fighting again."

Markus smirked and talked to the cab, "Me to little soldier boy, stupid soldier boy, me to."
