Tick Tock
An uncomfortable silence had settled between you and Sans during the walk home, his hands trembling in yours as you held them in a tight grip. You were just glad that the skeleton was unharmed, the same goes for the human attackers. Sure, they may have tried to harm you both but you knew deep down that everyone was capable of change and that made your heart frail. It felt like your kindness held you back but you wouldn't change a thing. Who knows what could have happened if things had been different. Your mind begins to drift to that vacant look that Sans had displayed earlier, haunting you like a relentless ghost. Maybe Sans could see something you couldn't, maybe the timelines were something only he could see. Whatever they were. The wonder overtook you, your own hands beginning to shake just as Sans' had subsided. He looks at you warmly, squeezing your hand in reassurance to try and comfort you.
" Babe, I'm sorry about back there. Let's talk " The shuffling sound of Sans' slippers come to a halt. You look up to meet the skeleton's gaze, seeing a deep sorrow in his eyes that only a tortured and repressed memory could cause. You had displayed that look many times in the mirror and now you could see the deepened saddening in someone else's eyes. You lean your head to one side, showing how confused you were and how much you were longing for an answer to this new question that had arisen. You both take a seat under and old, worn clock. Tick, tock. It was like the ticking was in sync with your heart and all you could feel was a sense of dread that could not be explained easily, words being useless in this situation. You could feel the tears prick at your eyes, expecting the worst. You didn't want to loose Sans, knowing now more then ever that you needed him but that still didn't still your quivering heart. It shook in your chest, your soul thumping the same beat. The skeleton places his bony hands on your leg comfortingly, eventually taking your hand in his. He sighs softly, his smile ever present on his face. His smile was like a permanent mask but it didn't fool you, able to see through Sans like a piece of glass. You smile softly, your glistening (H/C) hair flowing in the gentle wind like a quiet stream. Sans seemed to prick up a little, seeing your soft smile and the caring look on your features. It was like that you were all he cared about and as long as you were fine with the current predicament then he had nothing to fear, lucky for him that you were fine about all this and would stand by him no matter what.
" So, let me explain this all to ya " You nod slowly in understanding, the chiming of the clock ringing in your ears gently as it strikes twelve.
" Back in the Underground things were different, time didn't flow normally. Things would repeat and many days would be the same as the one before. Frisk was the cause of this, restarting time until they finally decided to let us go free. Each time they decided to do something different, even just slightly, it altered time and created a new timeline. Things would change completely before perhaps returnin' to normal " A sadness flashes in Sans' sockets, small tears in his eyes. You place you arm comfortingly around him and held him close, feeling his shaking soul against yours. Seeming that the closer they got the more the bond grew between you.
" I was the only one to remember that time had changed and a few times Pap, he.....he..." The tears finally overflowed from the skeleton's sockets, running down his face quicker then running water. You could see how hurt he was and you knew that pushing for an answer was not a good idea. You keep Sans in your tight embrace, listening as his sobbing finally subsided, able to speak once more but he next words shook you and you began to tremble in the skeleton's arms as fear filled your being and you were unable to feel the faint and warm beating of your soul.
" I saw the timelines of when we would meet. I could have lost you as easily as Papyrus "
